Taste of Tokyo is one of those Chinese-owned Japanese joints. This means that it’s really not comparable to the many amazing authentic Japanese restaurants in the city, but the food here is incredibly cheap and comes in huge portions, so I guess I can’t complain too much. I ordered the shrimp tempura udon noodle soup. For $ 11, I got a whole container of udon in broth, a separate container of tempura, a side of salad, and some oranges. It was much more than I needed for lunch! Everything tasted fine, nothing mind blowing but not bad either. If you’re looking for comforting hot noodles, this will definitely do the trick.

This is not Japanese food. This is a Chinese –run restaurant masquerading as a Japanese one. First time having a chirashi Don that was served on a plate. Poorly cooked rice.

Fast delivery, fresh food. I love the pork gyozas. I usually order one of those with the house salad, which comes with a wonderful orange dressing. Don’t always order here but when I do, it always hits the spot!

Lack of good sushi is a problem in the Financial District, not gonna lie. It’s surprising because you’d think there’d be good places with all the financial firms in the area for client lunches, dinners, etc, but there just isn’t. Below are my sushi recommendations for the area, but even at that, I wouldn’t go to one of these places on a weekend night, or a date, or a special occasion. These are more casual ‘lunch’ sushi spots, and just ok, in my opinion, with the exception of Suteishi, which is good, but for the price, I’d go somewhere better(read my review). Best Sushi places to go in FiDi, in Order, with my Stars: Suteishi: 4-stars Haru: 3-stars Nu Sushi: 3-stars Taste of Tokyo: 3-stars Niko Niko: 2.8-stars Koodo: 2.5-stars Shin Ju: 2-stars Oka: 2-stars and Wasabi: 2-stars cause it’s the McDonald’s of Sushi and a different animal. And that’s really it. There are few other places that serve«supermarket» or «convenience store» sushi as it’s just a counter in a Deli or grocery store that’s pre-packaged or made in the morning then sits out all day, and typically lower quality… places like Open Kitchen, Café Water, Zeytuna, Bento, etc, but I’d pass on these unless you’re in a hurry and/or can’t go to the places above. Taste of Tokyo and Nu Sushi are probably the two I go to the most as Suteishi and Haru are too expensive for lunch. So as far as this Review — for **Taste of Tokyo**, I think it’s the best of the bunch for lunch or an after-work casual dinner. There’s nothing spectacular about Taste of Tokyo, but for basic, good quality sushi, this place is reliable and reasonable. I usually go for the 3-Roll Lunch Special with Soup/Salad for $ 11.95. Overall, Taste of Tokyo is good and I recommend it for basic sushi.

My favorite sushi delivery in FIDI. Always quick, always fresh, always cautious, and priced well. Straight forward sushi place…

The lunch option is pretty standard but the people serving at the counter are just rude for no reason! I am not going back.

We had an interesting time here while we waited for our food! We chatted with everyone else who was waiting for their food to be ready… who had been waiting 30 minutes before us! It was a crazy day we decided to try this place out, a couple other people who are regulars here said it is never this bad and they always walk in and order and their food is ready after 10 mins. We waited a while but it was nice to chat with other customers while we waited. The waitstaff on the other hand isn’t as polite but eh don’t care as long as my sushi is fresh and tasty! I decided on the sashimi lunch special, which comes with a california roll, 6 slices of sashimi — crab stick(not my favorite), ahi tuna, and salmon(my fave!), salad, and rice. For the overall taste and price, this place was really good and I will be back. I won’t eat here but I will order via the app and pick up(plus the lunch specials are only valid for to go anyways). Also check out the pics of the sushi rolls– they use less rice and more meat which I appreciate!

Decent lunch sushi. There is nothing about this place that is unusual or unexpected. It serves lunch sushi to the lunch crowd without any complications or frills. Steady and good rolls and sushi. And, for the price you really cannot get better.

I’m not a fan of non-authentic Japanese restaurants because most are just serving generic Japanese food. Since my co-worker was in the mood for sushi(actually veggie rolls rather than raw fish), she suggested eating at the Taste of Tokyo. I knew the restaurant wasn’t going to be authentic from its name alone. I didn’t mind because I was in the mood to Unilocal another restaurant. The menu offers a variety of the food items you’ll find in just about every other«typical» non-authentic restaurant. The prices are reasonable for the financial area. The complimentary green tea tasted more like water. The miso soup lacked any flavor and also tasted like water. The lettuce salad with dressing is as plan as it gets(but my co-worker appeared to enjoy it). As for the entrees, my co-worker enjoyed her two orders of veggie rolls. My chirashi wasn’t the greatest but wasn’t the worst either. The serving was small but the raw fish were fresh. The restaurant is cozy where two people can sit, chat and eat(but be prepared to be rushed with the bill and ready to leave). Would I come here again? Perhaps if it’s another type of restaurant only because of it’s coziness. As it is now, it gets 2.5 Unilocal stars…

Sushi OK and priced right for FiDi. Make sure you tell them to give you«Soy Sauce in your bag, because apparently that’s not a common thing in a sushi spot.

I was craving Japanese food and Unilocal led me to this restaurant. The restaurant looked really busy but within 10 minutes of placing my order, my food was ready! The staff were friendly as well. I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki lunch box for $ 9.25 including tax. It came with rice, california rolls, shumai and soup or salad. It’s not the greatest sushi or salmon teriyaki but it’s cheap and it’s fast.

A friend and I had a nice late lunch at Taste of Tokyo. We both had bento boxes and enjoyed the offerings. The atmosphere was conducive for chatting. Note: I’m giving Taste of Tokyo three stars but I wish I could give it three-and-a-half.(It’s more than«A-OK» but I’m not exactly a «fan» yet.)

Don’t that letter that big grade A sign on the glass window fool you. They sign was paid for. This place sucks, not only does it suck but you are gonna pay for it with a trip or two to the restroom. I ordered teriyaki chicken, california rolls and a miso soup, at least thats what I thought I ordered. The chicken was raw inside(literally still pink and gumy), california rolls were ok, and miso was water, I mean the damn broth is already water, but this ish had no flavor of any kind. Don’t waste your time or money.

This is my go to lunch spot in FiDi — i probably get the lunch box 1−2x a week. I tend to go for the salmon teryaki box, which comes with rice(white or brown) two fried shrimp shumai, 4 pieces of california roll, and a classic salad with the orange ginger dressing over iceberg lettuce. It’s the right amount of food, you’re full, and it’s only $ 8.50!!! You can’t get food anywhere in FiDi for that cheap. You can only get the lunch special if you do take-out or delivery, so I always call ahead and go pick it up. It’s literally done in 10 minutes so I basically order for pick-up on Seamless & leave my office 5 mins later– and it’s there waiting for me. My favorite thing to do is get a side of eel sauce to pour over my salmon and brown rice– keeps things nice and juicy since the rice is just plain. The side of eel sauce is an extra $ 1. They also have great lunch special for sushi– maki combo of 2 rolls is $ 8.95 and you can get a wide variety of great rolls.

I have been here a lot times for lunch. Compare to the other nearby Chinese owned Japanese restaurants, this place is definitely better. :Ambiance: Even though this place has two floors, it could very packed during the lunch time. :Food: I normally order the Sashimi lunch or Sushi rolls. They were pretty average and nothing special. During my most recent visit, I had shrimp and vegetable tempura. This dish was huge! It was well worth the money. However, it was kind of oily so I can only have 2 pieces of shrimp and 2 pieces of veggies. They were crunchy and tasty. :Service: The staff were very nice and friendly. They moved very fast. I think I would visit this place again for more cooked dishes.

I can’t speak to the cooked food which everybody seems to be hating on, but the special rolls here are excellent, and this spot is a great find in an area that is otherwise pretty sad for good takeout options. I’ve ordered up from here a couple times now, and every time has been a great experience. I usually get a bunch of special rolls, and they are ready for pickup within just 10 minutes. They are also very pleasant and polite over the phone, which is unheard of for these places. They actually spoke English, and I didn’t need to repeat my order over and over, AND the order was completely correct. Here are some of the great special rolls I’ve tried: — Sunshine Roll($ 5.25) — Top Roll($ 13) — VCR Roll($ 14) — Dragon Roll($ 10) — Rock & Roll($ 7) — White Dragon Roll($ 11) — Crazy Tuna Roll($ 11) — Brooklyn Roll($ 12) They also actually put in the extra effort of giving you a package of fruit for dessert with your order, including pineapple, oranges and cantaloupe. Good quality special rolls at decent prices with fast, friendly service. I will definitely be ordering up from here again in the future when I have a hankering for sushi and I get sick of the superior, nearby Ise.
