Tucked away in the basement level of The Roxy Hotel in the chic TriBeCa neighborhood, The Django — a new jazz club from scene makers Vito Dieterle and Joseph Schwartz — has been impressing its patrons with unique, craft cocktails, delectable small bits, and nightly live jazz music since its opening on September 2015. In line with its subterranean location, The Django exudes a cave-like ambiance that is further accentuated by the dimly lit candles and vaulted ceilings. The artistic brilliance of Dieterle and Schwartz is sprinkled throughout The Django’s interior design, including the hand-picked vintage lighting fixtures from antique markets. While I did not get to try savory items on the menu, the small plates are reminiscent of those you would find at a classic Jazz Age Parisian boîtes, such as Chicken Mushroom Truffle Vol Au Vent(chicken and mushrooms in a white truffle sauce served in a puff pastry shell) and Oysters Herbsaint(fried oysters with crème fraîche, fennel, cucumber, and herbsaint). The impressive selection of creative cocktails run the gamut from classic to variations, such as Old Fashioned(bourbon, sugar cube, angostura bitters), Martini(gin, dry vermouth), and Margarita(tequila, lime, combier) on the Classics page to the corresponding Variations of these cocktails like Chet Baker(aged rum, sweet vermouth, honey), Rolls Royce(gin, sweet vermouth, dry mouth, benedictine), and Made in Mexico(tequila, lime, cucumber, mint). You can let your creativity run wild by asking one of the skilled bartenders to make you whatever you want. The highlight of Django, of course, is the nightly live music. You will see and hear musicians trumpeting and singing, while people tap their feet, nod their heads, and dance to the beat of the music. Make Django the next destination for your night out — it won’t disappoint.

After much anticipation, we finally paid this place a Visit. The food and beverage here was excellent. I thought the cocktail list was a bit too«simple» for a spot charging 18 a cup, but they were able to make whatever cocktails that I asked them to make that were off the menu. I also came to the realization that Jazz is not quite my cup of tea for Saturday nights. Go upstairs to the other bar instead :).

You feel like you’ve stepped into a 1920’s speakeasy. The ceilings are low and barrel-vaulted, almost cave-like, dimly lit with candles. The jazz musicians were good, but the music wasn’t the attraction here. Everyone was talking and it was loud, with the music soothing us in the background. The drink menu is extensive with lots of cool sounding cocktails I’d never had before. I asked the bartender to make me a drink using whiskey and lemon and he came back with a non-complicated but well balanced concoction of whiskey, vermouth and a twist of lemon. A good choice for someone who hadn’t revealed much of his preferences, well done. My LOVED my next drink, the Brandy Alexander. It was creamy and frothy and sweet. All the cocktail glasses are cute and 1920’s-tiny. Ordered the nuts. They were OK. Waitstaff are fun and friendly but they became swamped as it got busy on this Friday winter night(though there were still plenty of empty tables). A fun place to hang out with friends or another couple. Great place to bring a date on a weeknight when I assume they aren’t as busy.

Not many people know about it yet because it’s in the basement of the Roxy hotel(formerly Tribeca Grand). Gorgeous space and live jazz(for free) with great food and cocktails … can’t beat it. Great spot for a date or meeting

Am surprised at lack of any reviews for this new jazz bar. Had to take a leap of faith to host my wife’s birthday here, despite no reviews, just based on the few pics online, but more importantly, after speaking to the gracious hostess, Becky, on the phone, who seemed quite accommodating to the needs of our group, which sealed the deal. Drinks and food, while slightly overpriced, were not disappointing. The layout allows for coziness and privacy for a large group while keeping the vibes lively. Salsa night happened to be playing, and the band, Los Hacheros, didn’t fail to enthrall. The server was prompt and attentive. All my guests had a whale of a time. Am glad to have discovered this hidden gem in the heart of TriBeCa.
