The Filling Station

This booth in the Chelsea Market offers 3 staple products: Beer, olive oil, and salt
As with my other reviews, the main attraction is the beer.
If you plan on shopping the crowded market, this should be your first stop.
Although they sell and fill growlers, my focus is their pints. Each pint of beer is sold in a mason jar that carries a $ 2 deposit. You pay for the beer plus a $ 2 jar deposit. You are free to drink your pint through out the market. When finished you can pay for a refill or return the jar for your deposit back. The jar includes a metal threaded lid and you could keep it as a souvenir if you don’t mind losing your deposit.
They oddly do not allow tasting samples of the beer. Fear not, the taps are clean and EVERYTHING on their list is exceptional. On the plus side, they do offer tasting samples of both their salts and oils. The salts are all pretty far out and tasty. Watching other customers sipping oil samples from small paper cups was a bit of a turn off for me.

This is a nice spot in the middle of the busy Chelsea Market to pick out some specialty oils and vinegar’s. They have around a couple dozen oils and vinegar’s that all are welcome to sample. With small paper cups sitting next to the oil and vinegar taps you can’t help, but to want to try all of them. If you feel the need to try all of them there is nothing stopping you.
My oil recommendation is the Tuscan EVOO, which is a perfect blend of basil, oregano, garlic and rosemary. This is great just to dips some bread in or even drizzle over some pasta.
As for the vinegar I absolutely love the fig vinegar. It’s a nice mix of balsamic and fig purée. This vinegar has the perfect sweetness to it and is great drizzled all over a salad.
Oh and bring your bottles back to reuse for 10% off.

No trip to Chelsea Market is complete without a stop at the Filling Station. They specialize in making a variety of oils, vinegars, and salts. They are phenomenal! My favorite is cinnamon pear balsamic vinegar. Reminds me of all the times when I had just finished dipping a delicious pear in a bucket of cinnamon thinking damn I wish I had some balsamic vinegar to drink this down with. But seriously, it’s incredible. Other things to try are the sesame oil and black truffle salt. I don’t really like truffles, but this salt is awesome.
Lastly, they also «fill» growlers with beer. Good beer. Like really good beer. You pay a deposit for the growler and if you don’t lose your growler while walking around NY drinking apparently they will return your deposit. I know, crazy.

Chelsea Mkt is a must-​visit for me each time I visit the City: the Reuben at Friedman’s, a crêpe at the Bar Suzette, various oyster options, and vinegar, oils, and smoked salt at the Filling Station.
My repeat purchases are:
— Tuscan EVOO
— Grapefruit vinegar
I also like:
— Ginger peach vinegar
— Smoked salt
— White truffle oil
I think they have some sort of recycling program where you bring your bottles and they’ll fill it — I could be wrong, but check!

It makes a nice lazy afternoon to stop by the Filling Station and drink a beer while wandering Chelsea Market. I have liked all but one beer I tried there (there was one with bourbon somewhere in the description that was way too sweet for my taste). I stop and get a beer every time I visit the market.

Shop in Chelsea Market that offers a wide variety of olive oils, vinegars, salts, and beer that you can «fill» up mason jars, growlers, croquets, etc with to take home. You can taste test the oils, vinegars and salts before you decide which one to purchase. They have a rotating beer list which they post on their website.

We got couple of beers from here, right before they closed for the day. And I will warn you, if its time for them to close, they will close the shop even if there is someone who is interested in buying something. They literally closed the counter right in front of «possible» customers in their face… that was surprising but they have to be strict at some point if they want to go home at a certain time…
Anyway, we bought 2 beers at $ 5 each. They charge $ 2 for the jar… If you ever go back and didn’t forget to bring back the jar, then there is a benefit to that (they give you $ 2 off), but if not, it is simply making the beer to be $ 7.

Two King Kong sized thumbs up for this place. I saw a lot of chumps walking around Chelsea Market with plastic cups of brew, but you need to rise above them and come to this place. For just under 8 bucks I got a reusable glass jar (with a lid) for my pint of beer. Classy! And it looked like refills were cheaper if you had your jar (return trips!). The beer selection was not huge, but seemed to be of good quality. I had the War Flag American Pilsener and it was really good. They also do growlers for about $ 15. I see some other reviews talking about vinegar or something. Whatever. Go for the beer!

Aggs, love this place! I love places that have a buffet of olive oil and balsamic vinegar tastings and the quality here is so very excellent. If you’re in Chelsea Market, stop by, taste a few, buy one as a splurge for yourself or your someone you love (because this gift is too good to just give to someone you like!). I have not tried their beers, but I imagine they’re great as well.

When I woke up last Saturday I didn’t imagine I would be visiting the Chelsea Market* — and I certainly didn’t think I’d be stopping by The Filling Station to sip on some flavored vinegar.
Wait, what?
Yup, you read that correctly. Both light and dark vinegar infused with all sorts of deliciousness. And all available for you to try! Chocolate. Raspberry. Coconut. Honey Ginger. And my favorite of the day Cinnamon Pear.
They’ve got infused olive oil too. **
Imagine a small space with beautiful dark stained wood shelves lined with little keg like containers. Below each tap is a drip pan and a stack of baby tasting cups. Taste one, taste them all, combine an oil and a vinegar into one little cup. One could easily spend 30 minutes just sampling. Come to think of it — I think we did spend a half hour sampling. But then I bought a bottle — so all that sampling was worth it!
Bottles come in three different sizes: 200 ml ($ 12.95), 375 ml ($ 16.95) and 750 ml ($ 32.95). Signs around the shop indicate a 10% refill policy so I asked about while checking out — if you purchase a bottle of olive oil or vinegar, finish it and bring it back to fill up again then you can save 10% on your next purchase. That’s a nice little bonus, every little bit helps, right?
Do yourself a favor — brave the madness that is Chelsea Market and try out The Filling Station. I’ve already got a list going of all the things I want to try with Cinnamon Pear Vinegar… so I don’t think it will be long before I’m back fillin’ up my bottle.
*Don’t get me wrong — the Market is great. But its crowded and annoying on a weekday… you can imagine it on a Saturday. Bah.

The Filing Station is Chelsea Market’s go to spot for craft beer. They have six craft options on tap which are served in either mason jars or growlers. If you return your mason jar, then you receive a $ 2 rebate. It’s about $ 9 for a pint after the rebate.

Who would have known that I would been so infatuated with a store filled with so many different kinds of salts, vinaigrettes, and oils! This is the perfect place for gifts (IMO)! I enjoyed sampling the different kinds of salt and ended up limiting myself to a few white truffle salts, black truffle salt, and rosemary salt, all which I really enjoy! I also love the re-​usable glass jars they come in.

Great little place with flavored salts. I almost walked by it, but then I walked in and tried some of the salts. They are not like anything I have had. The staff working was very friendly as well. I bought some stuff to take home and cook with and foresee myself going back to get more.

The Filling Station has everything! The products, the staff and the location are perfect. The staff was very friendly and the gentleman by the beer tap was a peach. Awesome concept actually, to have a beer station within the Chelsea Market. To be walking around during the day with a bottle of your typical domestic or imported beer is a little bad, and some people might even give you piercing looks of «oh my gosh, it’s not even noon yet!» However, the hipster and trendy mason jar where they serve their beer in, will have people guessing as to what it is you’re drinking. IT COULD BE ANYTHING. Gladly, it’s really good beer. Tried their Empire IPA (#6) and it was fantastic. A little too hoppy for my taste, but I enjoyed it.
FYI, if you return the mason jar, they’ll give you back $ 2! Some people keep it for keepsakes and stuff… but if you’re like me… go get your money back! :D

The quality of products offered here is top notch. They offer high quality flavoring salt, as well as a variety of different flavored olive oils and balsamic vinegars.
They have everything out and in the open so you can taste it before you buy it… So you can try all the unique flavors and pick your favorites! They even offer food pairing ideas for everything they they sell!
If that doesn’t sell you on stopping here then let me mention that they also have some amazing craft beers on tap that you can drink while you walk around enjoying everything that Chelsea market has to offer!

I absolutely love this place and rave about it to friends and family visiting NYC. My friend, and recently my mom, all left with hands full of balsamic vinegar to give as gifts. I love their espresso balsamic vinegar and recently purchased the pomegranate one. There is a lot of depth in flavor.
My dad also especially loved the beer in a jar idea and took the jar as a souvenir. Beer is really good too!

The idea of walking around the market, looking in shops, tasting food, and chatting with your company while drinking beer from a jar?
It’s bloody brilliant.
We’d recommend all visitors to go here first, then try to find the dinner place of your choice. Also if you return for another round, you get 10% of an already reasonable price. We kept the jars, but if you return them you’ll get a refund of 2 $ each.

Stumbled upon this place being not quite sure what it was. Tasting of oil and vinegar? Okay, I guess. Wait — they have beer? To walk around the market with? Sold!
Got a mason jar filled with Uinta Hop Nosh — a nice hoppy bitter that made casually walking around the market a lot nicer. For $ 7ish — relatively equal to any other bar, but you can get $ 2 back if you bring back the jar (I didn’t).
Service seemed straight forward and the spot is tiny — so have to move it along to not crowd other people.

Really enjoyed the plastic cup of beer I ordered to go. They have 6 beers on tap — list is on the chalkboard. Captain Lawrence IPA (16.0 oz draft = $ 5.00; 7.0 ABV).
Even though this beer was known to be hoppy, I was still curious to try it. I ended up liking it and wish I had time for one more. The Filling Station doesn’t just do beer. They have a wide array of vinegars and salts to taste test and purchase! I had the pleasure of taste testing all of the salts that were out on display, but didn’t get a chance to try the vinegars, though the names of them were very intriguing… would have wanted small pieces of bread to try them with…
Would come back for sure!
