I had a wild experience at this bar that some would regard as phenomenal but I found slightly scary. I came here with my girlfriend, best friend, and a random older gay black man we met on the subway who said this was the place to be on New Years eve. We were three young queer girls a little tipsy heading to the west village looking to have some fun at a gay bar on new years eve. I cant speak in terms of the price because our new friend bought our entry and our drinks for us(thanks kind stranger), but I can tell you those drinks were strong. The atmosphere was a bit off putting as everybody glared at us and was unwelcoming as we think they assumed us to be straight girls. Once they realized I was there with my girlfriend they were more inviting which i can understand. The crowd consisted of old white guys and they were playing Barbra Streizand which was expected and funny. The dance floor was dead until we started running around dancing and people began to loosen up once they shrugged their haughty new york exterior. I was drunk as was my group when I helped a woman in the bathroom, who proceeded to dance with my friends and I and ask if we were party girls. My friends replied no because they got bad vibes from her but I replied yes because i was drunk and assumed she was just asking if i like to dance and have fun. She proceeded to take me outside, to a doorstep about a block away and pull an illicit drug of her bra. I’ve never done that before but suddenly i was offered a bump from her rolled up metro card. Im young, drunk and impressionable so I do it. Its not her fault i did it but i felt weird and taken advantage of afterward. We walked back to the club and she proceeded to offer this old man on the sidewalk sex for money. Thats when i realized i was with a prostitute. My friends were running around frantically because they lost me. We found each other and I was high and drunk so they took me home. Im only upset because my friends later told me that the older men in the club were looking at the woman suspiciously like they had seen her do things like this before. It would have been nice for someone to stop me when they saw her leading me away from my friends and warn me to at the very least stay with people i knew. A lot of things could’ve happened to me that night but luckily enough nothing did. I dont know if she does this a lot but if you’re young and intoxicated in this place watch your back because the people in there wont help you.

Some are calling this a dive bar and I don’t feel that place gives that vibe. I mean I guess it is a «dive» but not in a negative way. very comfortable vibe here. Strong affordable drinks and nice old school music are what makes this place great for me. If you don’t appreciate an older crowd this place may not be for you.

Love the characters and the drinks. The drinks are strong and cheap… simple. Sometimes thats all you need. Great drink specials.

Amazing atmosphere! Went here with my girlfriend as a random last minute date for our anniversary. The bouncer at the door was so nice and welcoming! He talked to us every time he walked by us at the bar. The bartender we had was great! I had sex on the beach, it was strong, I loved it! The place was crowded, but the atmosphere was great. They have a pool table in the back. Everyone that was there that night were nice and friendly. We talked to almost everyone that walked by us. I’m happy we stumbled upon this place. Can’t wait to go back again!!!

I was so excited until I walked in, the bartender wasn’t welcoming at all. We ordered 2 shots and he charged us way overprice. It was like they didn’t want us there. To add we went on Monday so it was slow so you think they want the business!

NOT!!! Nicholas, the WHITE Doorman, is Racist and Prejudiced against White Men and mostly older HOT White men. We say this cause we sat at the bar. and cruise guys as they come in, and we watched him turn away more than 8 White Guys that came to the Door(Looking HOT over 50) we overheard him telling One Daddy type You cant come in this bar we have had complaints about you for using racial slurs the poor guy said«What? I have nevr been here»,… Just another example of Younger Gay Guys Bullying Hot older Daddies in the Lower West Villaga. CASHONLY Bar, and seems to be alot of attitude from Bartenders that used to be glad to see me and my buds. No longer go here that much,… SAD… Dont recommend this place anymore,… they need to Clean house and get new management n Staff.

A good place to get a genuinely strong drink at a decent price. The bar tenders are pretty nice for the most part, I never dealt with a rude one. The crowd is pretty mixed, if you are looking for the purely young and sexy crowd, it is not really the place. Younger guys tend to use it as a place to get some cheap drinks before heading off to clubs or other bars(I know because I do it) the times I have stayed the entire night, the crowd tends to be a bit older, which isn’t a problem depending on what you are looking for. Ambiance is VERY casual, I am embarrassingly overdressed when I come in. It can be a bit ratchet at times, but that’s the fun of it when you’re in the mood right?

It’s a good bar. I come here sometimes. Drinks are strong. Customers are cool. Come and get your drink on. Ask for Markee. He’s the best. And he’s real sexy.

You want a cheap strong drink without all the pretentiousness? Go here! Fun, but sometimes ratchet. But who cares when your getting a cheap drink?

I feel my earlier review was unfair, as I was super drunk and pissed off about places charging cover that night. Also, the guy at the door was being a bit of an ass to us. I went here later on a late Saturday afternoon and both patrons and the bartender were quite nice. The place has a neat look in that it actually has a ceiling and walls that make it «look» like a hangar, but a little chic’d up. Drinks are still annoyingly lame like every other gay bar(why can’t we have a little class about this without charging 20 dollars?) and the bar still doesn’t take credit cards. The next time I come across a gay bar that takes credit cards, I’ll probably clutch my pearls. The best thing you can say about the Hangar Bar is that it is competing with the Rockbar for the least West Village-y gay bar in the area. Of course, Rockbar was probably just accidentally built on the wrong side of the Hudson, so I’m not sure it counts as West Village.

We stopped in here after a nice lunch on a day trip to the City. It was our second visit. This is a nice neighborhood bar, not very bust on a Sunday afternoon. The clientele is ethnically mixed which makes it very nice. The bar tender was friendly and the patrons appeared to be some regulars and some visitors. We enjoyed the ambiance.

I love this place, can’t believe I haven’t thought of reviewing it till now. I admit I have been going for the past 3 – 4 years only for gay pride. Let me tell you why… It’s the best spot to hang out in the bartenders are great the drinks are good and so is the AC. Most importantly you can see the entire parade pass by from right inside the bar. I tell all my friends to meet us at Hang bar and we always have a great time. They don’t charge an entrance fee if you get there early, I believe they start charging after 5pm. Not sure cause I’ve never had to pay. We always try to get into the city early to catch all the functions going on for pride. Yes I know this review is super late cause last I went was July 2013, but I’ve been coming here for a while now. Even though I haven’t been here other than pride I still wanted to put my two sense in. Yes I do agree the bathroom situation sucks when this place gets packed. Meet you here at hang bar for pride 2014! lol =) Enjoy.

I’m not sure what some folk’s problems are with this place. As a pasty white guy(visiting from San Francisco) I felt more than welcome. No awkward stares, no nasty looks, and no bad service. I was treated just like anyone else in the place. I even had a handsome guy strike up some conversation while getting a drink that I ended up chatting with all evening. They do make you pay a cover but it comes with a free drink(odd, but when in Rome…) There is some standing space in the front, followed by a long narrow section along the bar, and a more open back room with a go-go dancer(where everyone seemed to congregate). I kept my distance since that’s not really my thing, but enjoyed people watching. A solid bar to hang out at with no pretention.

my friend and i came here on a Sunday evening and we were surprised to discover it’s packed. And whereas we would always see the blinds drawn open and could see customers inside whenever we walk by the bar, that Sunday the blinds were drawn closed. Nothing special was happening inside, except for a single dancer doing his work on the bar, plus the customers who looked like they were enjoying themselves. i think the ambiance was particularly cozy and intimate that evening, for one reason or another. and so we went about enjoying our beers and our conversation. we will be back soon. btw, i’ve always heard from my caucasian friends that this bar caters mostly to black customers. i guess, it’s true; i saw a few white customers that night, plus myself who’s Asian. and I think the bathroom happened to be neat and clean that night(so I’ll be curious to find out the next time I’m around).

It’s very loud in that tiny space, but it’s a gay bar, so that is to be expected. The crowd is very convivial and welcoming, regardless of your race or gender. Best part: The cocktails are strong and the happy hour is long. I had four cocktails over the course of 90 minutes and paid $ 20.00 including excellent tips. Great place to get your drink on!

«Kara, if you had your left boob out here nobody would care.» L.B. Unilocal should have a separate scale for welcomingness. Well I guess I’ll be the pioneer of my own scale then: Welcomingness: 5 Easy-to-talk-to-ness-of-strangers: 5 People: Well have your own people — bringing this easily to a 5 Proximity to train: 5 — Right by the 1 Train and other trains too Proximity to pizza restaurant by the train: 8⁄5 Music: 5 Drink strength: 5 2 for 1 Tuesdays: Yesssss Bathrooms: Ugh It is a come as you are DIVE gay bar and I love it.

The Hangar. One of my favorite hangouts in New York City. Tucked away on Christopher Street inbetween the 1 Line and the Christopher Street Piers. I tell you, every time I make it to New York, I simply HAVE to go to this bar. Why? I’m glad you asked! For starters, the bartenders know how to pour a mean drink. I mean if you want to get totally smashed, this is the place to do it! They have a VERY heavy hand… for example a vodka-cranberry made for me was 98 percent vodka, 2 percent cranberry. Three of those and my good friend was carrying me out of the bar. Then there’s the people. Yeah this could be considered a pickup bar, but I consider it comedy. It is a good place to hang out with friends though. Just get there early so you can get a place to sit. On the weekends they have dancers; some are hot, some… not so hot. All in all I enjoy coming here, and I recommend it. Just be warned… you might get hit on. But is that really such a bad thing?

I was in here yesterday after brunch and walk around from the East side of 28 Street all the way to the piers by Christopher Street. After talking with friends and walking with them all that time I wanted to unwind a bit. I came in here after noticing the chalkboard with the Sunday $ 4 vodka specials. Meaning $ 4 mixed drinks if it included vodka(house vodka of course). I got there and there was a bit of small crowd starting to happen which is the usual build up to a crowd in this place from what I remember. I asked for a screwdriver when the bartender requested my order. After pouring my drink he let me know about the $ 4 vodka. He then asked me if I was even old enough to be there. I told him my age and showed him my ID. He commented on the day of the month my birthday was in. After I finished the screwdriver, I contemplated another one. I declined because I needed to be headed home. The kind bartender said I didn’t have to leave even if I wasn’t drinking but I told him I needed to be headed out. Very pleasant experience.
