University of the Streets has had a jazz jam for well over 40 years, and also hosts great jazz concerts in their 2nd-floor loft space. In the past when I’ve gone to the jams, I’ve seen a guy in cook’s whites with his soprano sax – apparently he had just got off work – and George Braith, inventor of the«sopralto Braithophone” – a soprano sax joined to a straight alto. There were also a number of guitar players and drummers, all reading off«The Real Book.» University of the Streets also has vocal workshops on Thursday evenings, and performances on other evenings. I’ve been meaning to start going back to the jam sessions, but tonight found me at a concert of «Two Sisters: Two Baris, One Mind, and a Bass.» Two virtuoso baritone sax players; well, in my opinion, you can’t have too many baritone saxes.
