BESTBURRITOINNYC! Seriously. Best I’ve had. I got the chicken straight up and it was the best burrito I’ve had in NYC. They give you 3 sauces to add to it, all of which are delicious. Will be returning for lunch everytime im in the area… and its lunch time. 5*

First of all, I know burritos better than anyone on the planet… and I’m here to say, get the chicken burrito! Just trust me on this. Goodbye

We ended up here accidentally when we found out the place we intended to go for dinner was closed, and we were pleasantly surprised. The chips and guacamole are great — though keep in mind a large guac is relatively small — and the margaritas are strong. Long communal tables can be good for groups. I tried a mahi torta(not on the menu, but they do serve it), which was pretty good, but I would try the taquitos next time. It’s dark and loud and sports a fun crowd on a Friday night.

Do yourself a favor and walk past this place. The food is not good at all. Sorry I don’t have a photo of it — I guess it’s bcs I usually get a pic when something looks good or tastes good etc. I had enchiladas: served in a strange to-go disposable plate/tray, with very dry rice, a little re-fried beans, the two enchiladas were filled with dry diced chicken, and had the appearance of a microwave meal. The guacamole was meh. Just go to Chipotle instead. Here the quality is much better and you get more food for the same money.

I love the place. The food is delicious, the margaritas are good and the music is very cool, I was there eating and thinking: girls, I wanna go dance! The only drawback is the noise, when it’s crowded you have to talk quite high, but I am use to that from many Spanish places.

CARNEASADA — able to get a bite from someone and it was delicious. Deeply disappointed in everything else I ordered(beef empanada and tacos al pastor, as well as side of rice and beans). The atmosphere was so cool I really was hoping the food would be up to par, but it really wasn’t.

Honestly, the food was alright. Not worth it to eat there in my opinion. I had the tacos, they weren’t great. I’ve had better. I did love the drinks though. Gave me a good buzz so that’s a plus. Also, the fries were gross and I feel like the fact the workers don’t clean the tables like physically wipe them down is disgusting.

A little embarrassed to say I really dig Tortaria. Maybe it’s my past LA life admonishing me for paying so much for tacos. But anyone who’s found themselves in Union Square with a hankering for a solid Mexi meal and/or drinks at a spot that’s neither fancy nor divey should give this place a try. Tacos & burritos de rajas are my go-to, usually to-go. Specials are usually solid as well. Ingredients are fresh and combinations are simple and tasty. The bar is small and perfect for a couple margaritas or cervezas and some snacks at random hours. I probably wouldn’t step foot in here on a Friday or Saturday night. I’m meh about the clientele and the general lack of fucks given by employees — with the exception of the bartenders, who’ve always been courteous. I see complaining about the self-serve model, but I can’t imagine how crazy the place would be with waiter service. Here you order and pay at the cashier/kitchen and pick up your food when it’s ready. I, of course, recommend the bar, where you can perch and chat and your lovely bartender will do the footwork. You do what you do, Tortaria. I ain’t hatin.

Tortaria used to be my go to lunch spot when I used to work in the area. The torta sandwiches are AWESOME! I used to always order the steak torta. I did love to order some chips and guac on occasion. Also, I love the roasted corn with cheese at Tortaria. It’s so delicious!

The tortas here are always extremely delicious and yummy. My only complain here is that the tortas are so small. You can’t really expect to get full off of 1. You either have to order 2 or a side. But i can’t complain cause they are so frekin good. The Milanesa de Pollo is really good and so is the Pulled Pork.

People dont seem to like the serve yourself aspect of this place but the food is good. I have been back here twice and its always good… cool atmosphere and fun inside. I would go back. I got the taquitos… grilled chicken and chicharrones and loved them. My date had the cheese quesadilla and loved it. Drinks are good as well.

I’ve walked by here 1000000x and always thought it was so cute and couldn’t wait to try it until I did try it and was like WTF is this no waiter service model. You order everything including drinks at a stand in the front. This is cool and fine if it’s a fast-casual lunch spot, but they also have a full bar and a huge menu… It just seemed weird and super annoying to have to go to the front everytime to get a new drink. Pretty loud. Overall good atmosphere and music– the place is REALLY cute!- but I will likely not be back for the sheer fact of no service model even at night hours.

My review is based on a quick lunch and it was a good one. Had the eggplant torta solo. $ 8(not cheap) for a medium sized sandwich that in any other area, would run you $ 5 – 6, but it was perfect to satisfy my appetite. Two thick cuts of eggplant, fried to perfection with 2 large slices of avocado, a handful of grilled jalapenos and a chipotle sauce of sorts(also on each table). It was very messy, but delicious. I went @ 1:30 and the place was very dead, but the music was blaring over the speakers. Way too loud even for this guy(drummer and singer for a band for years), so I know loud. I saw at least two couples walk in, hear the loud music and decide to exit. Plenty of two top tables, a bar to seat 6 people and a handful of larger tables. Staff at the front were nice and the meal came out within 2 – 3 minutes. A great place to grab a bite and not use up your entire lunch hour. One guy working the floor was a bit rude to get to a trash bag. I was reaching for napkins and he just budded his way in. Relax pal, I’ll be on my way in seconds. I’ll be back to try other items on the menu. A nice find.

This place has very fresh food. It’s serve as you go. You order your food and pay for it. They will call your name when it is ready. They serve sodas and fresh drinks, along with alcohol. If you want to be served you can order at the bar in the back. All of the food is very fresh and authentic Mexican. What I didn’t like is that I had to clean my own table since people come and go so quickly.

I was in the area with a few friends the other day trying to get on the L to go to Brooklyn for brunch. As the L always does, the service was delayed and crowded as hell. So we decided to look around Union Square for a place to eat. I had been to Tortaria a few times before this past Sunday, but mostly for lunch on weekdays because my old office was around the corner. I haven’t tried much but what I have tried was pretty good. The service is a little lackluster. They’re never very friendly and it seems pretty disorganized. Quesadillas and empanadas are good. This past time I used the restroom and it was really gross. There was an awful smell and they weren’t clean at all. Also, the hand dryers didn’t work which left me drying my hands on my shirt.

Lisa E suggested lunch here, having checked in previously with our daughter. I immediately loved the atmosphere, funky cantina with bright colors and a comfy vibe. We were eating light so we split an order of grilled tuna tacquitos, 1 for each of us. An order of elotes(street corn) spicy cheesy goodness and an order of sweet plantains with a deliciously sweet leche. Dipping sauce. Prices so reasonable, tacos made fresh to order, great casual spot. They look like they have a nice bar menu(tequila heavy natch). This place Is surely a great choice for the local university students.

Fresh, authentic cantina in the on University Place and 12 th Street NYC. Something for everyone, reasonably priced and in the middle of a high traffic area south of Union Square, North of NYU and Washington Sq. Pk

Wow what a fun vibe and dinner spot! Loved the upbeat music the entire time, candlelit /dim lighting, and cute décor. Only downfall– It’s a seat yourself restaurant so we made the mistake of sitting in the corner so service was a little iffy at the beginning since we were hard to spot. It’s also a little tight with seating so might have been good we were in the corner so we weren’t squished between two tables. Onto the positive! — All prices are VERY reasonable although the portions are what you pay for, so if you’re feeling hungry you should get a few items. My sister and I got guac and chips, steak tacos(comes with 2), a chicken quesadilla, and for dessert churros with chocolate(all prices for each item was $ 8 or less). All delicious! I got the watermelon margarita and my sister got a pear one. Loved mine, but she thought hers was a little too spicy — the waiter was accommodating by making a less spicy one for her. Service improved towards the end. Other notes– –They have a To-go counter if you just want to pick up a quick bite. –more towards the loud side because of the fun music(which I loved but others might not) –Really want to try the Tortas next time I go back!
