I was a little underwhelmed with the quality of food here. It was a little overpriced for what I ordered, and I have definitely had better sushi in this neighborhood. I ordered a rainbow roll and a salmon avocado roll. The salmon avocado roll was fine, but a little too chewy for my taste. The rainbow roll is what I was very disappointed in. Some of the fish on top of the cali rolls was dark brown and did NOT look appetizing. Also, the cali rolls were tiny! There was no cucumber in them and only a little bit of crab. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, but I think the only reason I would come back is for the happy hour that they advertise, it seems super reasonable with $ 3 drinks and $ 4 apps/rolls.

I order sushi probably 3times a week and decided to try this place as it is close to my home and cheap. i must say though, their fish is not the freshest and both my rolls were very warm which definitely didn’t give them a fresher feel

I go often to this restaurant as it’s close to my place and to my work… great spot for a quick lunch or a relaxing dinner. Food is really good, reasonable price and good service! I only wish there was a little more light inside!

The restaurant has been opened for long time. I visit this restaurant many times, but never disappointed. The restaurant ‘s Sushi-sashimi for 2 is best deal.

«Eh, just ok» I wanted to expect so much more with this place. First off, the décor of the restaurant is very nice and intimate and the service was great. The food was the standard sushi flair. I ordered the sushi dinner box, which was about 16 bucks. The box had generous portions of food but I found the chicken to be rubbery and slightly under cooked. I found that 3 bucks for a soda is way too expensive. The restaurant has a daily happy hour from 5 to 7 with 3 dollar appetizers. I would recommend checking out this restaurant during this time or during lunch, when the prices are cheaper, to determine if this restaurant will satisfy your sushi needs.

This was the best TONKOTSURAMEN I have ever had in my life so far. Thank you! Exceptionally large portion for a great price at lunch. I will be back for sure.

There are probably 10 sushi restaurants within a 1 block radius around my apartment, but I still end up choosing Totoya. I end up getting take out sushi from here at least once a week. The sushi/sashimi platter for 2 is $ 50 and a good amount of food! We always ask to sub out the california roll though… the sashimi for 2, $ 22 is also great. The portions of fish are awesome. I have eaten in the restaurant once and the service is meh, but I won’t hesitate to order to-go from here.

The fresh inventive sushi should be paired with more attentive service. That said, great happy hour and comfortable atmosphere.

I’ve been a Unilocal user for as long as I can remember and no restaurant visit, in my 23 years of existence, has ever prompted me to create an account and post a review. The day has finally come for me to fulfill my civic duty towards the people of New York City. A few of my friends ordered the chicken yakiudon(can’t recall if that was the exact name). Absolutely dreadful and dry beyond belief — and I quote my friend the moment he bit into the chicken: «my mouth is a fucking desert». I watch enough Kitchen Nightmares to know that all of this could’ve easily been avoided by tasting the food before it’s sent out of the kitchen. Instead, the chicken was smothered in sauce to mask its texture. Despite only taking a single bite, it still managed to defile my palate. Out of respect, they wouldn’t even serve this in North Korean labor camps. I had the sushi/sashimi combo(literally a boatload of food). Generous portion, decently priced. Taste is what you’d expect from a typical sushi restaurant. It was surprisingly quite pleasant. This was the only redeeming factor. Definitely would not recommend… but if you must, avoid the hot meals at all costs.

Decent food. Cool ambiance. The lady next to me is really loud, so it’s kinda ruining it for me.

The food here was SO good! Through the grapevine I had heard mixed things about this place, like it used to be good, went downhill, now is good again, etc and it’s a block or two away from my apartment, so I decided to give it a try. I came with friends for my birthday for dinner and definitely was not disappointed in terms of the food, drinks and prices. They’re not the cheapest but also not as expensive as other sushi places in the city, and you can tell that their fish is high quality. We ordered simple rolls, chef rolls, naruto, edamame, fresh sushi(pieces of fish over rice), sapporo, hot sake and mochi ice cream! I love that they have mochi! The only downside was even though the servers were attentive early on, when we were eating our main courses it was almost impossible to get a hold of someone to order another drink or put in our dessert order and it wasn’t really too crowded or busy. Overall, I’d do takeout or come back to eat, but hope that the service gets more consistent.

At first glance, I thought this restaurant was called Toyota. I was all like… huh? That’s so weird. A restaurant named after the car company? That could be pretty confusing. When I arrived, I stared at the writing when you first walk in and had an a-ha moment! It’s Totoya. I started with the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi… they give you the sauce on the side and you can pour it on yourself. It’s also garnished with a small salad. Ohhhhhhh snap. So good! I looked at the cut of the yellowtail and thought I wouldn’t like it because it was a little thicker than I usually like but boy was I wrong. It’s probably one of the top 3 pieces of yellowtail I’ve had in Manhattan. I also ordered the spicy tuna roll which was deeeeeelish! I ate every piece in likely less than 60 seconds. Then I finished with a California roll but rolled with soy paper not seaweed. Definitely recommend all 3 of these as it was enough for me(one person). The prices were EXTREMELY reasonable. Yellowtail was like 11 bucks(usually I pay 15 – 18) and both rolls were like 5 or 6 bucks each which is super cheap considering how scrumptious both were. Definitely will be my go-to spot now. They also have happy hour — what? Can’t wait to check that out…

SOMUCHFOODFORTHEMONEY!!! If you think the appetizers are massive… try the sushi/sashimi combos… BOATLOADSOFFOOD! Fish was fresh and the décor was cute. The area is nice and quiet and surprisingly not very full. For dessert, I ate mochi ice cream *noms*

In general, I really try to avoid eating raw fish at any restaurant that has a «B» rating. This place seems to waver between an «A» and a «B.» I think this probably tainted my expectation a bit. The sushi is pretty cheap and they have a great lunch special and a $ 3 happy hour which is pretty cool. The sushi is good, but unmemorable. I do like that you can order either white or brown rice.

I’m a little surprised to see that this place only has a 3 star average… but whatever! I really enjoyed their sushi and the prices were very reasonable! I came with a friend for dinner and ordered the sushi deluxe dinner, a specialty roll, a few pieces of sushi a la carte, oyster tempura, and a small bottle of sake and our bill was around $ 70. Considering the amount of food we had, I found it to be a pretty good value. The fish is very fresh and their happy hour sounds pretty nice too. Also, loved the intimate atmosphere and décor. The tables are not right on top of each other so it makes a great spot for conversation over some yummy rolls.

I came to eat here before I went to danger fields comedy club. The food here was amazing. The rolls were very fresh and the staff was friendly. Anybody in the area should go. Their dinner boxes are worth the price.

I really love this place… some Japanese restaurants can feel like cafeterias but Totoya is so cozy and beautiful… the food is some of the best in it’s class I’ve tasted in the city… and as a food photographer trust me… I have tasted many a cuisine. The staff and chefs are very accommodating as well… great great place.

As an avid sushi devourer, I have tried many places… None come close to the exceptional food and ambiance of Totoya. It sets the bar well above average and has ruined other restaurants as they will never come close to this level of excellence. As far as the food, perfect. The spicy spider roll was flavorful and clearly made with fresh ingredients. I ate a number of other dishes and all were equally fantastic. My husband(who can really down the sashimi and nigiri) really went to town and loved everything. The staff is as amazing as the food! We sat at the sushi bar and were lucky enough to be able to chit-chat with the chef who was knowledgeable and friendly. He made us on-the-house items to test and made sure I loved what I was served. He rocked! Overall, the ambiance, staff, and food were exceptional. I could see where people may have a wait in this small spot — but it is well worth it!

Came here with a friend who lives nearby for happy hour dinner. The place was pretty empty at around 5:30pm, which is pretty bad for happy hour but I guess it’s more of a residential neighborhood. $ 3 happy hour special for rolls, dumplings, and drinks is pretty darn good! we got spicy tuna(great), salmon(really great), and sweet potato tempura(great) rolls. I(for some reason) insisted we try the pork gyoza(dumplings) which was just ok. Very typical dumpling. We got the hot sake, also $ 3, which I didn’t like, but I assume it’s because I’ve never had sake before so I just didn’t like it. Service was good and attentive for us. A great sushi place for the happy hour price!
