No doubt this a dive bar… Newark’s little secret. The whole block is stuck in a time warp, turn around while sitting at the bar and you may see a 20 something Billy Shatner stuffing pennies into a fortune machine while his newlywed wife is yanking his sleeve. My favorites include the fish plank sandwich, a filet o fish on steroids and the strip steaks. All the meals include a great salad, which is down to earth salad like you would make at home. No wedge salads or goat cheese fruity creations here — save those for the higher $$ places around the corner which close up long before the Draft House closes. The strips are flame broiled less than 20 feet from ya, right in the bar. Do not put any garlicky vinegar steak sauce these juicy meat lovely’s. Order it medium rare and full of juice. Have them grill up some onions and dump them on the steak, its part of the hidden menu. Home fries are served on the side — ask for the peppers to be grilled with them you will like them. The onion rings are also great, large and the batter is sweet — order them as your main dish if you aren’t in the mood for meat and you are willing to risk a cholesterol driven heat attack. Sorry no mashed taters here. Next time your at the Midland for a show skip the normal joints and head into the Draft house especially after the show. The crowds will be down in the bar and the Dhouse has a kitchen that is open late. For desert — the bar serves a full complement of drinks or bring your desert, but be prepared to share with the bar crowd.
