I was very excited when Nagoyaka opened in Gateway Center. At the time, there were not many options for sushi in Downtown Newark. Nowadays, there are more sushi places, but Nagoyaka still is a go-to spot because of its location, accessibility and convenience, and consistently delicious sushi and Japanese fare. While there is a cute sushi bar and a table or two, there is not much in terms of seating for dine-in. However, it is very nice to eat there when it’s not super busy(i.e. the lunch rush). Do the sushi bar if you can. It’s a pretty popular lunch option for office workers in Gateway. Most people order to-go, or are ordering through the Hilton(Nagoyaka and Market Street Grill cater to hotel guests). The sushi rolls are always on point and well made. There are some interesting rolls, too, like the Sunrise Soybean Sheet Roll. I’ve also had the salmon teriyaki and it was filling and satisfying. Price wise, it’s a little expensive, but I wouldn’t say it’s a rip off.

Ridiculously fast, fresh sushi. The avocado was perfect and the oshinko was crisp in that way pickled vegetables always should be. It was about $ 13 for 3 rolls and a large cup of miso. For a place so close to the train station and a hotel, I was expecting to pay quite a bit more.

I’ve eaten the worst meals here. With the limited non-sandwich/salad lunch options in Newark, I have given this place so many chances. It has failed at every turn. The sushi does not taste or smell fresh, so I’ve tried the udon(which is a combination of bland and the wrong broth — just means they may not know what udon broth should taste like). I tried the salmon teriyaki lunch and they hide the price until you order — over $ 16 for a small thin cut of salmon with so much black pepper on it you can only taste black pepper. Indicates a cheap approach to their customers. Also, if you decide to eat there in the air-less small back room, they require you to buy bottled water and refuse to offer tap water — more evidence of how they view customers(get every last dollar).

Great sushi rolls! My go-to place when I feel like eating Japanese food. They taste super fresh. In winter I enjoy their miso soup — it truly warms the heart. Their hibachi is also pretty good, but it is not the best I’ve tried. They have very limited seating available, so I normally take it to go. There usually is a medium-sized line; however, the staff is able to handle orders rather quickly. It’s a bit pricey, like most Japanese food, but it’s really good.

**3.5 I wasn’t digging the nori(seaweed) here. It tasted a bit fishy and got unpleasant the more I ate. I do have to admit though, the lunch deals are very affordable. ~$ 10 can get you three hefty regular rolls which was more than enough to get me full. My favorite out of the bunch was the sweet potato tempura roll. Sounds funky, but its really good. Nagoyaka is a relatively good lunch option in the area. The service is quick and friendly although I only saw about 10 or so seats inside. It looks like most of the patrons order to-go back to the surrounding offices. Within the hour I was there, everyone who got their order was happy so I assume they do a good job with their to-go service. I’d put this place in my lunch rotation if I was in the area, for sure.

A bar and a few tables to sit at. Service is slow. Salmon and tunda rolls are full and yummy. 12.95 for 3 rolls. Drinks come bottled and canned. No tap water. No bathroom. Give wipes at least.

Very nice place and lovely people. Best sushi for miles in any direction. Extremely convenient to Newark Penn Station, Newark Hilton, and close to the Prudential Center. Next to the only Starbucks in Newark. Call in your order ahead of time for best results. Limited seating. Tell them Andy sent you.

It’s such a nice treat to have a sushi place in your building. Their sushi is fresh and delicious. It gets a little busy here but there is always a seat when you need it. Definitely a place to go when you’re craving sushi.

I go to nagoyaka a few times a month for lunch and haven’t had a bad experience yet. They have a great variety of rolls which are always fresh. Some of my favorite menu items are the shumi, the mini rock roll and the crunchy salad. The only downside is that it’s usually packed so it’s difficult to get a table or a seat at the sushi bar during lunch. This summer they will be offering a hibachi station which should be interesting.

My favorite roll is the Deadliest Catch. Kind of pricey but consistent quality and pretty speedy with your order. It’s always busy during lunch so call ahead if you’re just doing carry-out. They’re always really nice too.

I had a long day of running around and came here after being my boyfriend lunch. Go figure. The place is pretty small but very clean. It was around 100, so the place was pretty packed. I wish it was bigger because I definitely would’ve sat down and ate there. There were pre-made sushi rolls. I had a spider roll, California roll and spicy tuna roll. All for less than $ 10. Great deal if you ask me. Quality was pretty good too. I definitely will be returning when I’m in the area but I want to dine in next time.

This is my go-to spot when I forget and/or am too lazy to bring my own lunch to work. I am a vegan, so I can only speak to the vegetarian rolls, but I’m consistently happy with my order and the service. For the amount of traffic they get being in Gateway, they prepare orders pretty quickly. Much better than a sushi spot I just tried on Ferry St.

I work within walking distance and this is a healthier option for me. I like their miso soup and some of their speciality rolls. I also get down on their sweet potato roll. This place is easily the best in gateway besides the Indian guy with the cart in the coffee store. I like the staff who put up with a lot of shit and of course George. Don’t listen to bad reviews of this place. Such HIGH volume leads to fresh fish and rolls are creative!

Probably the best sushi in Newark. I have been to this spot twice and have been more then satisfied on each occasion. One of my favorite is the Elvis Presley Roll, however they have a wide variety and they are all pretty good. Pricing is pretty moderate, so it’s not the worse…

I’ve been going to Nagoyaka since it opened in 2007, so it’s time to finally let YOU know about it. So, first off this place is pretty convenient as it is located in Gateway-which is a 5 minute walk from where I work. The sushi is ok, not great, but it’s a lot better than some other places I’ve been. I usually get one of the pre-made specials that they make in the morning, but after all this time they rarely surprise me with something new. I’ll usually get the three roll special(not huge rolls), which is filling enough and they are usually pretty tasty(though I have had a rogue scale in my spicy salmon like another Unilocaler). The place is pretty tiny so eating in can be a bit of a hassle, but if you can get a seat the service is great. I really LOVE the special rolls they make(in 2008 they actually had a McCain and an Obama roll), but they can be a bit pricey. It’s a fun menu and I am confident you’ll like Nagoyaka if you give them a try.

Not too shabby. 3 to 4, especially considering the limited options in the area. I go here around once a week and they do a good job with fresh fish. Prices aren’t bad but I wouldn’t say cheap either. Solid food across the board, nothing that’s blown me away but hasn’t disappointed either. A solid pick in the gateway!

In a search for sushi spots in the city of Newark, both Google and Unilocal listed this place first. I checked out their website and was blown away by their low prices. It didn’t seem right, but I still wanted to check them out. I go through Newark Penn Station all week, but I’m usually zipping through. Decided to stop in one day for take-out while waiting on a ride that I knew would be late. Who puts a hockey stadium in the middle of a crowded downtown? Anyway, I ordered nigiri(they just call it sushi out here) hamachi, hotate, amaebi, and a spicy tuna roll(they were out of uni, sadness). Everything was delicious! As for the price… not the deal I was expecting. While I’m used to most establishments pricing nigiri by the pair(without notation, just expected), this place prices per item. That $ 3 uni… nah, the price is comparable to the others, six bucks for the pair. Gotta drop a star for getting my hopes up(unless that’s just how they do it on this coast) AND for only being open on weekdays.

Cheap and good and conveniently located indoors so easy access during the winter time. Lunch combos are super fast and super delicious~ Don’t forget to leave a tip to the sushi chefs! If you sit in front of the chefs, you get complementary salad!

The fish is so damn fresh, I just found a scale in my spicy salmon roll.
