Does anyone know where the owner Jeanne Sakai is? I am an old friend of hers and have been unable to contact her at the cell phone number I have for her. She also has moved with no forwarding address. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I’m submitting this as a postmortem review. I walked by this shop space yesterday, and Newark Java is gone. The space has been absorbed into the martial arts studio next door. Frankly, I don’t see this as a big loss to the community. Over the past 7 months, I frequented the shop a number of times. The food was at best 2-star. I agree with another poster that you’d have been better off going to the Subway and getting a sandwich. The coffee was okay the first few times. The mocha I had on my last visit sealed the deal for my abandoning them for(*gasp*) the local Starbucks. If someone were to open a place nearby me in Fremont that could compete with Red Rock Coffee(Mountain View) or Café Borrone(Menlo Park), I’ll gladly ditch the Starbucks corporate monster. Until then, my business will continue to go to the Corporate Coffee Overlord.

I’ve been to Newark Java several times in the past 2 years and regretted it every time. When I go out for coffee I like to hang out and read. The problem with this place is that people are constantly smoking by the front door which is always open. There doesn’t seem to be any circulation in the place so when I leave I feel like I’ve smoked about three ciggs. while sitting there. I hate to complain because I don’t want to ask them to harass their customers so I just stay away.

aaahh… this place, i just read a few of the past reviews that people have written, sort of sad. I do not write a ton of reviews but this place is one place that is just nostalgia for me! My friends and I always used to hang out here back in the day, meaning 10+ years ago… This WAS the spot! Used to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes at night before going skateboarding, Did not matter what night of the week it was, this place was always had a study crowd. The coffee used to be good and the outside seating was good! I will admit i never really ate much of the pastries here it was all about the coffee! I even remember when starf*cks opened in the other shopping center we were still all hardcore and NEVER went there! Aahh i guess this is not a current review of the place, i remember a while ago hearing they changed owners, that is probably part of the issue! So this is more to point out how great of a coffee shop it was back then!

After trying their sandwiches, my co-worker and I agreed that we should have just split a $ 5 foot-long at Subway. I had the tuna; she had the egg salad. The lettuce on my sandwich was unwashed. There was still grit on the leaves. I pulled out the offending leaves but decided not to create a scene and kept it to myself. I should have complained but I just couldn’t be bothered. Aside from the unwashed produce, the sandwich fillings were just blah.

Service is not bad, not the best, but not bad. The drink I had today, a mocha smoothie, was pretty atrocious in terms of other offerings in the Fremont-Newark area. I have had better experiences at Newark Java, however, for instance the soy chai drinks I’ve had are very good. Pretty good choice of baked goods, other snacks, salads and sandwiches(albeit I’ve only had the baked goods, which are *not* made on site). Plus the coffee house carries some good Jones sodas as well as some Naked™ juices. Good to go here every once in awhile for a change of pace for doing homework, etc. And as others have said, support local businesses!

I really enjoy this coffee place– it is right by my home– and I choose to go here over *bucks most of the time– They are SO super friendly, and greet you like they know you, even if it is the first time you have been there! They have hard boiled eggs! And home made pastries! Deeeelish– Coffee is great– although a couple of times– the bottom of my cup melted? LOL– go here! I love it!

I still remember coming here when my bro used to go to karate around the corner. The HOTWHITECHOCOLATE was so warm and sweet. I love how they put real white chocolate shavings in it and then at then bottom of the cup you are left with a sweet little surprise. The people here are always friendly and they don’t mind if you stay here for a few hours to chat with friends or read a newspaper. It’s a great little spot that’s close to home. I love coming here in the wintertime.

Awesome! Great service, friendly workers and huge selection to choose from! I have been going there for years and I’ve tried almost everything… there is to choose from… But the White Mocha is the Best! The workers hand chop the white chocolate! It’s fresh and real good! All the pastries and beagles have a «home made» taste to them. They are fresh and there are many to choose from! The sandwiches, salads and soups are all spectacular! Great place for lunch!(This would be an excellent place for a work related lunch) Newark Java also does catering! They are so reliable and out-do there self every time! I also herd from the friendly(and beautiful) owner that they will be expanding! Breakfast and Lunch Diner coming summer 2007!!! Last but not least !!! They Have FREEWI-FI !!! (and it a great connection)

I’ve been going to Newark Java off and on for a few years now. It’s a nice change of pace and I think the only independent coffee shop in Newark to stay in business. I say give them a few tries.

It’s a local coffee and sandwich joint. They do offer quite a bit of selection. Coffee is kept in a row of pump-Thermos containers, but I’m sure the espresso is made on the spot. The do sandwiches and salads and ice cream. The interiors are pretty spacious. Times visited: 1

Solid coffee shop for the area. Good wi-fi connection, fine coffee and espresso drinks, good looking desserts(have not tried, but I will on my next visit). The sandwiches are good, not priced like Subway(5.50−6.50), but they’re of higher quality. Good, homey bread and the veggies tasted pretty good. They have a good selection of teas, the«Numi» brand and lots of interesting types. The desserts and baked goods look yummy, but I haven’t had any of them recently. Is this place under new management? Everything seems better, cleaner, friendlier. I think now I would rather try this place before Starbucks and Safeway.

Coffee is just ok, only thing I like is that when it’s your bday you can get a FREE cup of coffee. Support local business!

Not the most comfortable coffee place in town. You have to wade through a cloud of smoke from the people sitting outside. The coffee is just OK. I still would go here before Starbucks.
