Let’s address something first: The individual who claimed they experienced poor service here due to racism is severely misguided. This restaurant consists of equal opportunity offenders! I had a lousy experience here too and it certainly had nothing to do with my pigmentation. Let’s first discuss the service(if we can call it that.) Forgetful, with zero attention to detail. I ordered the same beer 3X and received three different beers… they tasted nothing alike! I had to remind them each time they forgot to bring it. Another«no no» — they brought out three entrees for our three person party and made the third person wait what I considered a disproportionate amount of time. No apology either. Asking for the check was another experience — at least 20 minutes before we saw the check. Oh, did I mention this place was empty? I would hate to see it when it is busy. Finally, they have some set of stones to add gratuity when your check is greater than $ 100. I understand for parties over a certain number, that is standard –but over $ 100? Oh, and mid meal we were greeted by a panhandler soliciting money from us — how quaint. Well how about the food? I had a steak with a slice of ham and an egg on top. Sounded yummy, but my steak was tough and grizzly and cooked at least 3 steps over the«rare» I asked for. It was in a tiny bowl swimming in some kind of broth and the small bowl made it impossible to cut, especially considering the mound of chips they heaped on it as well. Someone else in our party ordered a steak rare and also got shoe leather. Thumbs down.

Off the beaten path — venture down Prospect for this place. I have been there more than a handful of times — both for a good soccer match and for a family dinner. We have ordered multiple items off the menu and have never been disappointed. Generous portions, well seasoned food and delicious drinks all served by polite waiters. Sometimes he service is slightly slow but when you are enjoying yourself and still being asked if «everything is ok», it’s alright with me. Just keep bringing those Red Sangria by the Pitcher and I am a happy camper!

Went back last night after a disappointing experience two months earlier. I’m happy to report that the service and attentiveness to details as well as the quality of the food improved dramatically!

The food was very blah and the service was absolutely terrible. If you are black I would definitely avoid dining at Sagres. The server Guilhermo was not welcoming at all. He was very short with us and rolled his eyes whenever we said or asked him for something. The bartenders didn’t even ask us if we are enjoying our food or if we’d like another drink. We were ignored the whole time and had to ask for everything that we needed. The worst part about it is that they were extremely empty. The bartenders were more concerned about eating than tending to the guest. I suggested for my friend to try this place out due to a good past experience that I had but I will not be returning. There’s way too much competition and betters bars in the area that will give better service. The place is out dated, infested with flies, food was not good and the service was terrible. Need I write more? Side note: Guilhermo actually got out of his seat while he was on his«lunch break» to help another bartender deliver food to a table meanwhile we asked him for water and he rolled his eyes and walked away. Never again!!!

If you are an Ironbound tourist, get off Ferry Street and walk down Prospect to eat at the best spot the locals know. The locale has a old feel with a lot of carved wood with a big bar and huge television – great for watching sports. If you can’t decide order the picadinho de carne com camaroes. The sauce is like nothing you have tasted. Don’t fill up on the pao de quiejo although it is tempting. My one complaint is that the heat could work better, especially since there are big old windows that give you a great street view – still the food and the tv get 5 stars from me. This is a real deal Portuguese restaurant and I think Unilocal doesn’t make that clear.

I can only speak on the drinks and the atmosphere. I went late on a Friday night and had white and red sangria with a friend. We sat at the bar and the service was great. The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. The bar is small and the seating is pretty tight, but manageable. The music was very loud, but I enjoyed it. I would definitely come back the try the food. I like that the kitchen stays open late.

Trendy place with good food and friendly staff. A little small inside but during nice wether they have outdoor tables. Food is pretty good and their sangria is delicious! Parking is an issue and prices a little high.

Probably the worst customer service you’ll ever have. The food is ok. But the service was horrible. We had to wait for a plate of rice for 20min while the food got cold. While we ate bumbs came in asking for money Nobody at the door to regulate. I asked for the check. The waiter decided to wash everything instead making me wait another 25 minutes. When I went to ask for it again. I got yelled at! This is the first time being a former bartender and waiter that I actually make it a point to not not tip and create a Unilocal account so people can be aware of this place! If I could give it no stars I would!

The food here is ridiculous, authentic Spanish/Portuguese cuisine, large portions at a good price. Small bar with minimal seating, a couple tables inside and an outdoor area.

One of my all time fave places in Newark. I’m bummed they took the mussels vinaigrette off the menu, but everything on their menu is good. I’ve never had a bad meal here. Drinks are out of this world, and the ambience and service are great.

Slow to serve and only decent food. We had the Brazilian steak, calamari, chorizo, and one of their special pork plates. They were good but I’ve had better. The chorizo appetizer was huge! It was salty but nice and smokey. The service was nice but the food took forever to come out. This place is better as a bar than a restaurant, considering the clientele and how quick it took for drinks to arrive compared to food.

Great seafood and drinks. Came here many times over the past year so I’ll sum up the highlights of this place. I came here at midnight one weeknight and my girlfriend and I were still able to order king crab and seafood pasta, both of them were awesome. They also marinate their own olives and are delicious complimentary appetizers. I came here when the World Cup games were being played and they had a ridiculously large projector screen. This is def the place to watch sports on ferry st.

I’ve been here a couple of times and there’s no question the outdoor seating with a few pitchers of sangrias among friends and good company is the way to do it. The food is not amazing IMHO(not bad though) but the ambiance is legit and it’s great place for summer night drinks — thus it gets my thumbs up!

I came here around 9pm after a Red Bulls game. We were starving, the place wasn’t too crowded, so we figured the food would come out quickly. It didn’t. There was one bartender/waiter/host/everything. I felt a little bad for the guy because he was clearly overwhelmed. HOWEVER, he made an atrocious pitcher of sangria. WECOULDNOTDRINKIT. It was ultra sweet and had a sour after taste. We asked for it to be removed from our bill because it was inedible. The food wasn’t any better either. We ordered an appetizer of cheese with prosciutto. The cheese tasted very old and hard. The prosciutto seemed old and hard to chew. Seriously, it was just bad quality food. I do have to say the calamari was tasty. The sauce was decent too. That’s the only positive thing about this place. The rest of the food was bad, bad, bad. As we were leaving, another waiter showed up and apologized to us. He asked us to please come back. NEVERAGAIN.

Bar scene? Decent. Better on the nights with karaōke and in the summer where it’s all open to the outdoors seating. It’s a tiny place but comfortable. Food? It’s not a fancy place so you won’t be impressed if you’ve gone to the iberias and sol mars of the ironbound but they do shrimp in garlic well and their seasoned olives. Bitoques are good too. I actually recently had pasta here(I know. Come to a Portuguese place and order ‘Italian’!?) and it was actually real good! Specifically beef stroganoff and penne vodka. In the summer this place is poppin’. The whole sidewalk becomes outdoor seating! Oh yeah and sangria. If you’ve ever been to a Portuguese place you know we don’t mess around with portions, this applies as well to the amount of liquor ;) so yeah. Sangria.

I’ll be honest. I probably won’t ever come here for the food. Somehow, I don’t think it’s going to be comparable to other restaurants in this area, but the fun I had last Thursday night AMAZING! These bartenders are into what they do. I love just watching them making drinks. Huh? Yup! And the drinks are strong. Their Sangria is pretty solid. It has a crap load of alcohol. I felt like they were pouring for 3x the number of seconds than other places. As I watched one of the bartenders make a pitcher. I didn’t know what it was at first, and he offered a small glass for me to try and then we ended up getting one. Excellent marketing. Lol. The DJ played some fun songs. Thursday is also karaōke night. One girl just absolutely brought the house down with her voice. Crowd was really fun, drinks were great, music was great, service was spectacular. They paid attention to all of your needs. What else do you look for when you go out? Nuffin!

I hadn’t been here in a while and just had dinner on Sunday night. The service actually managed to get slower than before. My boyfriend and I met up with some of my friends and family who were already there. Although the waiter saw us sitting down, he never bothered to come ask us if we wanted to order food or drinks. We actually had to hunt our waiter down. Not to mention, we constantly had to remind him to refill our waters, etc. He acted completely uninterested. The food itself came out pretty quick. My boyfriend and I had ordered the Flamed Chourico as an appetizer and Beef Stroganoff as our entrée to share. The chourico was alright(their chourico used to taste a whole lot better!). The Beef Stroganoff tasted pretty good until I started having stomach pains at 3 am in the morning and was not able to sleep. My boyfriend had the same stomach pains and had to make himself vomit in order to feel better. Not to mention, that by the time I had to go to work the next morning, I was still burping the beef I had from last night. Needless to say, I won’t be having their food again.

Came here on a Thursday night and was super hungry… Big mistake!!! It took about an hour for our party to receive our food. Mind you the restaurant was only half full and my party was only four people. I ordered the fish sandwich… It was okay, definitely nothing to write home about. We also ordered a couple of pitchers of Sangria. Like some other reviews report it is pretty good, even though it was served with plastic disposable cups… Smh. After making quick work of the first pitcher we ordered another, well to no surprise they messed up the order as brought us a pitcher of white sangria instead… Since it took about 15 mins, we just decided to accept it. While it wasn’t terrible, it definitely wasn’t as good as the red… And at $ 25/pitcher it was a little steep! Overall this place is over priced for the quality of food and service received. I don’t know that I’ll be paying another visit to Sagres suing my time here on Newark.
