My Swatch battery died and I couldn’t find the replacement at my CVS on 8th(shocking, right), so I just wore the watch on my next flight out since my life is now such that I’m in Newark Liberty more than SoHo these days. Swatch offers the usual kaleidoscope mix of plastic and metal watches, but I was more impressed when Michael, the sales associate, immediately dropped what he was doing to help me with the battery. Imagine, some guy in an airport store offering help! Displaying an impressive knowledge of Swatch history, he recognized and complimented the watch from a collection years ago. When I bought the new battery, he offered to put it in for me, natch, and then he offered, «Oh, we’ll take care of this scratch for you too.» And away went the«Scarlett Letter» scratch I got at an employee holiday party on my way into the bathroom to make out with Stewart from Visual.(Color me Hester Pryne.) Anyway, you can take any Swatch into any Swatch store and they’ll polish the crystal and buff it up like shiny and new for free. And the service at the Swatch store in EWR is great.
