This place has some pretty good food. I know there is a lot of mexican places in the area but this one is pretty much the best. They do need to improve the salsa bar. I wish they had refils to. The people that work here are nice and they always get my orders right.

Tacos weren’t bad, but I wasn’t even offered chips, salsa bar was a joke, and on my plate I was given a few LEMON(not lime) pieces for my tacos. Total dive, unfortunately. In the Thornton/Sycamore«Little Mexico» area, for a Taqueria, it’s tough to beat Taqueria Celaya.

Probably a good second option to Los Portales, and closer to my house too. Bare bones décor, but they have a pool table, and 3 arcade games, including Pac Man and STREETFIGHTER! I might come here just to play that. Anyway their salsa bar was lacking, only a watered down roasted tomato salsa, pickled carrots, and lemons. Not sure if it’s stocked more during the week or what. Burritos are $ 5.00 and tacos are $ 1.50. I tried: Al Pastor — nice spicing, tender slices of pork. Didn’t see a spit though, Los Portales is hard to beat for al pastor. Cabeza — Good, tender and gelatinous, needed some salt though. Lengua — Pretty good, tender, greyish in color, not as beefy as my favorite at El Taco de Oro, but not bad either. I was pleasantly surprised by the tenderness of the meats, which is always my prerequisite. Spicing was on the subtle side, which I like as well. Chips were more than likely homemade but the lack of salsas was odd. 3.5 stars rounding down for the lack of a proper salsa bar.

UPDATE: Who the hell CHANGED the tortillas? God damn it. Their tortilla recipe changed. I had to take a star away. ************************************************************************ I LOVE this place. This is the Mexican restaurant Mexicans eat at. I LOVE the corn tortillas… its like they were just cooked the minute I ordered. The building formerly housed Taqueria Villanueva, which I was not too impressed with. While they’ve cleaned up the ouside with a new paint job, the inside is still the same with tacky décor.(i.e. fake flowers with dew drops, brown plastic table cloths and faux wood paneling from the 70’s) But who cares. They have a pool table and beer. This restaurant literally has 5 other Mexican restaurants in a 2 block radius. I’ve tried every single one including La Piñata and the Tortilla Factory. This is by far my fave restaurant. I am a Mexican food snob. As a resident of California for my whole entire life with a population of over 35% hispanic, to me there is just no excuse for crappy, unauthentic Mexican food. I hate Chevy’s. I hate El Toritos. I don’t even know why Tortilla Factory has the business they do. They taste like the same dried out, thin corn tortillas that I can get at the supermarket. I had lotsa Mexican friends and babysitters growing up. Being raised by a father who couldn’t cook, you know I was fed by them most of the time. My dad’s idea for dinner was steak. No… JUST steak. So, I was raised on Mexican food, eating with my hands. My babysitter’s family would make tortillas and tamales fresh a few times a year. It was a rude awakening when I found that you can’t get them like this everywhere. Anyway, sometimes there is this particular woman that runs the cash register that cannot understand, read or write english very well. She’s very sweet but just watch out that she gets your order right. Why the heck I took French instead when living in California, I’ll never know. LOL. There is a guy there that always straightens it out for me when she can’t understand. They are super nice people and always keep the tortillas coming. When my husband and I have a little time to kill we go down there for some good food, beer, and a game of pool. Sweet!
