Taco Ticos Stand

Approximately 7 yrs. ago I came here bc of many rave reviews (word of mouth). Immediately I noticed that the place is VERY small, couldn’t even sit down & not very clean. Before ordering I asked to use the restroom, no problem, they pointed the way. To my surprise I found chicken in a bowl with water running over it & a homemade wooden cutting board straddling the toilet with chicken parts & a knife! The staff member apologized & made room for me to use the facilities, showing no concern for the chicken in the bathroom! I WAS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED & LEFT WITHOUT USING THE FACILITIES & DEFINITELY NOT EATING THERE! I have NEVER been back since! Hey there in the north west end of city you find a great taco stand had a soft shell taco it was great does not look like much but worth the stop

Bottom line this place has been around for a long time. You assume it’s a Puerto Rican joint but they sell a lot of tacos here which are obviously not traditional PR food. All in all the food is OK, problem is their board of health rating. Here are some notes from an inspection that was made :

Amazing tacos!!! I go out of my way at least once a week to stop here for the awesome flavor. Their sausage & rice is pretty great too :)

OK here we go– I went here this evening because I’ve heard nothing but good things about the food here (my brother’s family loves it, a cousin loves it) and I like good Mexican food. My wife and I ordered a chicken fajita, an enchilada and a few hard shell taco’s as a «sample» dinner to share. As I was eating I’m waiting for the «great» taste to magically appear but it never did. The fajita was bland, the enchilada was watery (?) and the taco’s were bland with barely warm meat. I’ve been asking through my social media about this place and everyone tells me the yellow rice and beans, meat pie, pork chops is where it’s at but I don’t know… I’ll try it again someday but going to continue to look for good local Mexican elsewhere… hope this was helpful

Don’t be fooled-​you are not going to get authentic Mexican food or tacos here. The place is not the cleanest in the world, but they do have a few somewhat tasty dishes, though it’s more Puerto Rican/​Domican styled fare than Mexican. Tacos, which they are named after, are OK, but you can get much better on Broadway over at Los Portales. And, the prices aren’t that cheap here either. After a few visits it’s just not that remarkable and I probably won’t go back.

Have these people who reviewed and gave 4 and 5 stars actually had tex mex food. I’m sorry but enchiladas with velveeta on top of unseasoned chopped meat wrapped in a tortilla is not an enchilada. Also, who puts hot dog onions on tacos. Go straight to your nearest taco bell for better tex mex.

It’s a little shack in one of the crappiest towns ever, BUT the food is good. They can be a bit pricey, but it’s worth it for the home cooked Spanish food.

Love the new paint job! We’ve been going here for years and even when we move away this will be a have to when we come home for visits. The food is delish! I’ve never had a bad meal here!

It’s a shame they have such delicious tacos because its absolutely disgusting in there.

Love love love me some Tico Tacos! Been eating here for years. The location leaves something to be desired but the food is very tasty. I always get yellow rice w pork sausage and a meat pie. The rice is perfect here. 98% of the time its very fluffy and fresh. My gf always gets the taco with everything. She loves the onions they use and says they make the taco. The best thing about tico taco is their homemade hot sauce. One of the best I’ve ever had! Has a nice heat to it that will make your scalp sweat but not burn your tongue off. As far as their past health issues, i see no issue. I’ve been going to Tico Taco for the past 7 years consistently and have never gotten sick or known someone who has. My only complaint is I wish they would open a bigger place as it gets a little cramped when busy. A place like this with so many loyal customers could definitely pull it off.

I’m going to rate this place appropriately from my experience because the food is pretty darn good, however in light of a local news article about this place being one of the worst in health code violations (back in 2007) specifically, «Preparing chicken in the bathroom» has kept me far away from this place.
I was recently told about the article when friends realized I frequently visited this place. In fairness things probably have changed since 2007 but I feel tainted knowing I was a long time customer for years; even in 2007.
As much as I’d like to give a one star rating for learning of their past violations I have to be objective and fair but I’ll never eat here again. *barf*

Very good cheap food here. I may not know a lot about Spanish food but flavor is flavor. The Jamaican Meat pies are spicy and full of flavor. Great place to get lunch!

Disgusting. I would not wish this upon my enemy. I really can not stress this enough. By far the worst tacos I have ever had. I would choose taco bell over what they serve here. Eat here only if everything else is closed.

When I do get a chance to go here, I always get the empanadas, and they are delish! I have yet to try anything else but I’m sure its all great, the only bad thing I can say is that the parking is very cramped and when you dine in, there is very limited seating. But it is a diamond in the rough… that is newburgh.

Great food, ok service, It’s a taco stand ppl not the trump plaza. So yes it is not pretty. Same prices as fast food but you get actual food not manufactured mystery meat. We like it there… I am not mexican, puerto rican or spanish and I am not quite sure what the owners are but I don’t care the food is good!

The best in town. My husband loves the food here. If he comes home not hungry, i know he has eaten at taco tico. The food is home cooked. The size of the place is very small. Two booths. They have take out. Traditional spanish food here. Its the best at taco tico!

I went here today because I have heard from so many people about how good the food is here, well I am very disappointed!
I first want to say please do not get offended on some of the things I will say but its pretty much the truth. There food is something that would most likely be tasteful to an American who does not know much about Spanish food. They seem to have a Puerto Rican flag & some Puerto Rican dishes (well more like Caribbean dishes because they are plates from caribbean cultures) but the cook clearly did not seem Puerto Rican at all & the attendant who helped I know for a fact was not Puerto Rican. There menu is a simply a disaster they have tacos for a choice but don’t be fool they are actually taco bell tacos not close to authentic at all.(there whole name is Tacos Ticos but not very tacoish if u get what I mean) Their rice is very salty! I ordered a pepper steak and it had 2 little pepper strips & it was loaded with onions! it was more of an onion steak then anything lol. I have to say the meat was okay but I been to other mom & pa’s places here in Newburgh where the food is much more delicious & authentic.
Don’t waste your time & money here there are far better places in Newburgh were you can get delicious authentic food & if you are looking for authentic tacos there is only one place in Newburgh that is know for there amazing selection of pure authentic Mexican tacos for 1.25 $ each 215 Washington Street, Newburgh, NY 12 550
(845) 568‑0601 they are a grocery store named Azteca but in the back there is a small tacos only restaurant. They are by far the best Mexican tacos I have had & I love them! by the way I am not even Mexican but I love tacos :)

Some of the most delicious rice anywhere. The people who work there are helpful and very nice. Porkchops are delicious there and the pernil on the weekends will keep you coming back for more.
