Back Bay is nestled in a gorgeous area of Newport Beach, surrounded by what seems like primordial California marine environment. It’s an education and research facility owned by CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, City of Newport Beach, UC Irvine, and the County of Orange Health Care Agency. Back Bay says of its goal: «Our goal is for people [mostly grade school students] to understand what specific activities they should or should not do at home that will help protect the Back Bay.» I have deep respect for an agency like this, though I think the mission focuses too much on what kids do 20 miles away in their home, far removed from this uniquely lovely place. Kids get lectured about reducing consumption at school, in movies, on TV, and lots of other places. They tend to tune out because it all runs together as so much blather. Too bad, because every moment here is precious.
