Masusu Kinks

Im in town visiting from Atlanta, and I decided to go to masusu kinks today because I needed something quick done to my hair so I called in and made an appointment. I got one at the Newport News location as soon as I called. I decided to get two French braids which cost $ 18 per braid and I also needed my hair washed which was an extra $ 15. I didn’t think it was too expensive and the service was good. My only issue was how I wanted my hair to look. Luckily I had a picture in my phone to show the stylist, which help the process tremendously. What I recommend this place to anyone else? Yes I would, because they were really fast and I don’t think the prices were ridiculous, my grand total came to $ 51 but with the ten percent Unilocal check in discount I got it for $ 47.

I was looking for a hair salon that specialized in natural hair care. Someone recommended Masusu Kinks Salon. I went to get Senegalese Braids for the first time. The Stylist was very professional and took special care w my natural hair. My braids were not overly tight and unbearable like most salons. The maintenance products that they had were extremely beneficial in maintaining the style and moisture of my hair. I would definitely recommend this salon to anyone who is looking for that personal touch when they visit a hair salon.

I used to come here years ago to get my locs retwisted. My twists were only a few months old. I was a college student not from the area, so i needed a natural hair salon/​stylist that was affordable and great quality. I remember a wash and retwist was $ 35 and the owner, Nicole did my hair.

I made my appointment online, drove from Williamsburg to their Newport News location and the stylist was not there. I called the number and someone from their other location picked up and said «oh she should be there soon», but they couldn’t answer any questions as to how soon. I waited over an hour and the stylist finally showed up and she did not even apologize for being late! All she said was I brought the wrong hair and that I needed to get a different type of hair. I was pissed and should have left right then and there, but I really wanted to get my hair done so I put up with it, at least she provided the hair. After sitting with her for 4hrs, my hair was finished… the twists were much larger than I wanted originally. I selected small and somehow wound up with Large size twists put in… I also asked her for the «invisible method» but she said they don’t do that. ~_​^ I was very unhappy. I paid over $ 200 and the twists were a mess a week and a half later. I will not be going back.

It was ok. i might go back. I went there to get my locs re twisted and my experience was ok for me. i was there on time however no one got me in a chair for 40 mins. No problem I understand they had ppl. However I was getting just a retwist. I got there at 5 and did not leave until 8 my locks are not that long. I sat in the chair after getting my hair washed for 30 min while she washed another client. Then when she started to twist my hair she stopped to go over to another stylist that was having an issue with her client. I did not think it would take so long. Any who the work on my locs were ok, the ambiance of the place is very nice and chic. The stylists were very nice.

Been getting hair done there or 15 years, and that’s because it’s always done perfect. I’m know over the years I’ve gotten so much business just from women asking where I got my hair done. Always satisfied and the shops, cause I’ve been to all of them, have great atmosphere. And that’s another plus, Nicole has multiple locations.

I originally had my 10am appointment at their other Newport News location, however when I arrived there, I was told that I had to come to this location, which is close to Hampton. I was very furious, because this could have been avoided before my arrival. When I got to the other location everything was fine and dandy. The style I wanted was cornrows and a hair trim. The stylist that was giving me my haircut clearly didn’t know what she was doing, because she had to ask the other lady if she had to cut this particular section. Meanwhile while she was cutting hair, she was talking on the phone. Once she was done with my butcher hair cut, she proceeded to start on my cornrows, halfway through my cornrows the stylist stop to do other people’s hair. Finally when she was done, she came back to my hair and finally finished it. Overall I was disappointed with the whole experience… from me travelling an extra 20 mins to my butcher haircut I do not recommend Masusu Kinks. I regret not asking for a discount because I had to travel to the other shop to get this simple hairstyle done.

I actually live in DC but grew up in the area. I needed a retwist this past weekend when I was visiting my mom. I looked on the website and found that I could get a retwist for $ 35. What!!! $ 35?! That’s amazing! I pay almost $ 80 for a simple wash and retwist in DC. They were also open at 6am on a Sunday so that sold me.
Myself, my sister, and my aunt made appointments based on the services we saw online. My aunt made an appointment over the phone for a henna hair coloring treatment. However, when she arrived, they told her that they no longer do that. –_​–
As for me, my experience was OK. The reason why it was not stellar was because of the woman who shampooed my hair. I don’t know if she didn’t know how or just did not feel like doing it, but the shampoo was HORRIBLE. It just wasn’t thorough and she couldn’t rinse the soap out of my hair. The woman who actually twisted my hair was AMAZING! I can’t say this enough. I have never had my hair retwisted that fast and she did a beautiful job. I also loved the products she used.
Honestly, if the shampoo lady was trained better, I could give this place 5 stars. The place was clean and I liked the ambiance. It was decorated beautifully and it had a cool mural on the wall. I may try again if I’m in the area and I need my locs done. Perhaps she was having an off day.

I have been getting my locs done here for years and highly recommend. They have a great atmosphere as well as staff.
