I drive here from Suffolk when I get a craving for a great cheesesteak. Service has always been friendly and the cheesesteaks are always great. Very large portions and well worth the money. I may actually go and get myself one again today. Everyone seems very friendly and they are willing to work with you even when it gets a bit busy. Heads up!!! THISLOCATIONISNOLONGEROPENONSUNDAY.

Rick’s Cheese Steak definitely lives up to its slogan, «Why drive to Philly? Eat at Rick’s.» Seriously, this is the best cheese steak I have eaten outside of Philadelphia! During my first visit, I ordered a large cheese steak sandwich with beef, provolone, jalapenos and sweet peppers. I happily ate half and saved the rest for lunch the next day. The bacon, jalapeño and cheese fries were also deeeeelish. Seeing a pay phone displayed inside Rick’s reminded me of high school when I had to call my dad to pick me up after school! Speaking of the parentals, I should take them there sometime. :)

Stopped at Rick’s on a trip from New Jersey. The best cheesesteak I’ve had in quite awhile. My table also ordered corned beef, BLT, wings. Big portions and everything was fresh.

Found this gem after visiting the Virginia War Museum. The cheesesteak is excellent! I got the regular cheese steak and my boyfriend got the Italian. Both were fabulous and very filling. Would highly recommend!

I’ve been here a couple times and it’s an excellent mom and pops shop. Best place to get a philly cheese steak. The customer service is great, they often greet upon entrance. Offer military or shipyard discount which is cool. Food came out at reasonable speed. Food was excellent would recommend for anyone looking for a Philly steak.

«Don’t judge a book by its cover.» It’s the quote that was totally running through my mind the whole meal. We dined here on a Sunday evening; met our friends here. We plugged the address into our GPS, pulled up and thought, whoa, what is this place? Lol. It’s a small, green building that looks like it hasn’t been updated in a long while. I’ve read in a few reviews that this is THE original Rick’s. We walked in and there was the bar with a handful of seats & kitchen area behind. We went to the the dining area on the left, which wasn’t big at all. Got our seats and looked around at all the old style memorabilia.(There’s even a pay phone if you look immediately to your left when you enter the place.) Our server was friendly, handed us menus right away and got our drinks, then took our order. My boyfriend and I split the large Beef cheesesteak with bacon, mushrooms, and Whiz(MUST get whiz!) and small fries. You guys, it was AMAZING& definitely enough to share! The sandwich was huge & full of meat; each bite so tender, juicy, and full of flavor! I also loved their big crinkle fries! I kind of wish I ordered a side of cheese for dipping. Oh well, next time! Total from me, 4.5 stars! Again, don’t let the exterior scare you away from the best cheesesteak in Hampton Roads. If you live in VB or Chesapeake, you really don’t have to go to Philly for one, just go across the water!

Best cheesesteak shop on the Peninsula. One of the best in Hampton Roads. Hungry? Go there. Sort of hungry. Still go there. Take some home. Not hungry? Look at the pics on Unilocal. Then go there. You’ll then be hungry. It truly is one of the best. Big ass sandwiches. So good. So unhealthy feeling. So worth it. Bacon, cheese, and jalapeño fries are a must. It’s a meal in itself but I recommend you order and share with at least two others. Order any cheesesteak. You’ll love it.

Definitely one of the best cheese steaks I’ve ever had. None of the other cheese steaks I’ve had in this area can remotely compare. Generous portions as well. Awesome!!!

Love the cheese steaks here… best in Hampton Roads! We usually get the large cheese steak w/extra cheese and a large Maryland cheese steak(they have medium sized shrimp on them!) w/mushrooms, onions, jalapeños, and mayo… sooo much food and so delicious! The sandwich and fries/onion ring portions are huge so bring your appetite!

The food here was fabulous! Portions were very generous. You definitely get your money’s worth! The cheese steaks were amazing as well as the fries! The décor was pretty cool too. Would give 5 stars but we had pretty bad service as we dined in. The waiters were pretty inattentive. I had to refill my own drink more than once. And after we got our food we never saw the waiter again until it was time for the check. Would definitely be back, I would probably order take out next time.

Unilocal led us in the right direction in this one! Hubs and I went here for an early dinner and OH. MY. GOSH. It was so good! Kind of an oldies feel(50s and 60s paraphernalia on the walls). There’s a bar right as you come in the door or you can head left for the dinning room. My husband got the pastrami Reuben and I got the grilled pastrami sandwich(minor differences). Both were SOGOOD! They came with pickles and a side of chips too. We both ended up taking half of our sandwiches to go because the portions are a pretty good size! My husband is picky on places he likes to eat out and he was blown away by this place– said it was the best place he’s eaten in a long time. The waiter said that people come in from out of states and surrounding cities just to eat there. He said that people always try to get them to franchise but they like what they’re doing as is. We totally recommend this place. We would be coming back once a week if my husband wasn’t deploying overseas.

As much as I love Philly Style Steaks & Subs in Norfolk, this place is just plain better when it comes to cheese steaks. Their meat is more juicy and flavorful and everything is served hot and fresh. The portions are very large and generous. I can get two or more meals out of a whole cheese steak. Their chili cheese fries are so delicious — a pile of crisp fries drowned in yummy chili not-too-spicy chili and topped with plenty of liquid cheezy goodness. Service is quick and friendly and very attentive. The rest of the menu is similarly filling sandwiches and other meat and fried foods… but to be honest, I haven’t wanted to stray from the cheese steak. However, there isn’t anything on the menu that is particularly healthy or vegetarian/vegan-friendly — something to keep in mind if coming here with a group with varied tastes. I’m also a huge fan of the décor. There are vintage record covers, Elvis memorabilia, and other interesting vintage items to look at while dining. The décor itself has sparked some conversations during my visits. It would be a great place to go if you need an icebreaker as the walls give plenty to discuss! They will also make a plain cheesesteak(just the meat) if you request — I get a half sandwich like this for my dogs to share.

Being from Cheese Steak country, I’m a pretty harsh critic on a «Good Cheese Steak». This is one of them. Excellent! This could easily be sold in Philly. I ordered a «mushroom/provolone/Wit». The only reason that I’m not giving the 5th star is because it came out with American cheese instead. Also try the«Bacon Jalapeño Cheese Fries». No shortage of any of the toppings. No bacon bits here: they use shredded strip of bacon. You’ll definitely enjoy!

They give you a lot of food for the money, I agree… BUT, if the food isnt good… then the amount of average food is not what i look for. When they first opened up, I thought… GREAT, a good sandwich shop. Only problem, I like roast beef with cheese, sauted peppers/onions, lettuce, tomato. i ordered here twice just to make sure, if you dont have something to wash the sandwich down, you will not get it down,…this sandwich is dry as a bone. I drive all the way to new york deli in williamsburg if I want a really good sub.

One of the best places around for a philly cheesesteak! All I’ve had so far is the cheesesteak and cheese fries, and they’re both great. They pack so much meat on those sandwiches it really is a bargain for what you pay. The fries aren’t anything to write home about, but go great with greasy food as always. It’s a little hole-in-the-wall shop that seems off-putting at first, but inside is nicer than you’d expect. I will definitely be back!

When you have vintage Super Hero memorabillia in your restroom you have a great start with me. Ricks blew me away when checking them out for the first time over the last weekend. Although everything was not perfect they have earned my business and I am anxious to return. Ricks has been bookmarked for a year and I seized the opportunity with some down time in Newport News. This is Rick’s original location, they have another in the Denbigh which is in Northern Newport News. They also just opened a new location in Williamsburg. You will find signage excellent. They have a big bright sign right off of busy Jefferson Ave. The exterior is nothing special, but the fact it’s the original gives it some something to me. The building is in good shape for it’s age, unsure what it use to be but it’s not big, nor is the parking lot. Nice signage on the building too! There will be no mistaking that you have arrived. When pulling in the lot around 2PM on a Saturday there were some challenges locating parking. I did eventually maneuver around some snow mounds and got one. I am positive they have issues with parking when busy. I was disappointed to see fresh debris in the parking lot. I have trouble excusing trash. I walked in and found the counter immediately in front of me, dining room to my left. I was greeted pretty quick by one of the young staff members who asked if I was dining in. There is no doubt in my mind that they run a huge take out business. A few customers were at the bar and I peaked in and saw a large party in the dining room along with a couple other tables that were occupied. I elected to set at the counter as I most often do when alone. The wooden counter is not huge, maybe seats six and the kitchen is directly behind. The male waiter brought me a menu and was friendly and upbeat. I was surprised by the vast amount of items on the menu items. They not only have both beef and chicken cheesesteaks which they are famous for, but burgers, reubens, hoagies, chicken fingers, wings, pizza, club sandwiches, chili, hot dogs, salads and if not enough appetizers and desert. They also sell beer. I wanted a traditional cheesesteak and only had to discuss the size, they have two small and large. The waiter said the large was around a pound of meat and more once toppings added. Sounded like a lot, but I wanted the pic of that big beautiful steak. I ordered a combo with drink and fries. The only thing I had on the cheesesteak was mayo. I took the opportunity to look around a bit while my food was being prepared. The dining room was playing rock n’ roll. They have a cool theme of throw back album covers on the walls. I was really digging the vibe of the place. They also have a flat screen TV that is visible to everyone in the room. I also used the restroom which is in the rear. Not a large lavatory, but clean with supplies. What is most cool are the five Super Hero’s that adorn the wall. I believe these are authentic vintage metal plates, they are in very good condition. Back to the counter and my meal came out in approximately 15 minutes, not bad I was not in a hurry which is a rarity. My eyes must have bulged out of my head at the sight of the 14 inch long one pound beef cheesesteak. I really thought there is no way I can eat this, but would have fun trying. Everything was served very hot. The waiter did follow up with me soon after I got my meal, but it was too early, I had yet to have a bite. The crinkle fries were decent, but time to dig in to the main event and it did not disappoint one bit. It was everything that I had hoped for, hot gooey cheese and mayo. The steak was high quality and the bread was the authentic Amrose. I asked another waiter where they get the bread and he said Philly. I asked about the meat and he believed the also get it from Philly and there distributor Dietz & Watson. I sat at the counter and watched the four to five staffers busily take orders for take out and dining room. All of my interactions with the staff found them to be friendly and upbeat. I heard them ask over and over, and over when checking people out they were military, or shipyard, they provide a 10% discount and want to make sure it applied which is awesome. After around half way through my meal my beverage hit the danger zone, that means almost empty. I moved the cup to the end of the counter by no one got the refill. So then I ended up finishing it off and did the slurp test with a waiter that was standing directly in front of me. This is the test where you slurp loudly hoping it will be heard by anyone and a drink refill applied. Unfortunately the test failed and I had to ask him which he immediately took care of. Really cool place, very impressed by the quality of food and more over the amount of food for the money which makes it a true bargain in my mind. I will be looking forward to my next time back and my just crave one so bad I may need to make a special trip.

I wish I could give 3.5 stars here. Healthier cheese stake for $ 7.99(small)! I chose all vegetables in. Quite big and heavy and spicy. Tons of jalapeño in it, which is an extra good taste. You can get 10% off, if you are militaries. Bar area looks renovated but dining area looks really old and a little bit dark. Can’t be romantic. But my husband says ‘Who cares? It’s a cheese steak place.’ You’re right… I’m just a baby about cheese steaks. But I prefer juicer and more flavorful…

Cheese steak are good and you get plenty of meat. What I really like is that you get choices of cheese with your order as well. Provolone, cheddar, and a few others but they also have cheese whiz! Just make sure you tell them light on the whiz or you will get more then meat. If you eat end the place is kind of small but the staff is very friendly quick. Try the cheese fries as well.
