Before anyone had even *thought* of a food truck, there was Del’s frozen lemonade. This truck has been parked at Brenton Point State Park in Newport all day, every day, each summer for as far back as I have cognizance. Del’s is a Rhode Island institution. Visiting grandparents as a kid, after fishing off the craggy Atlantic rocks nearby; a day at Gooseberry Beach; flying kites in the Park; I had a Del’s. And now, decades later, husband and I are sure to make a point of stopping at the Del’s truck at Brenton Point at least once on each visit back to Newport. No trip to town for any visitor could be complete without slurping down one of these slushy, icy, tart and sweet frozen lemonades — with the occasional cold bit of lemon rind as a little surprise. Hold the cup between your hands to warm the whole mixture a bit, stir it all up with your straw, then go to town. Yeah, they’re a bit pricy, and yeah, you may get a killer brain freeze; but not much beats sitting on the WPA sea wall watching boats on the ocean with an ice-cold Del’s in your hand.
