Just one block away from my Newtown office, Dragonfly is one of those subterranean shops that gives the feeling of entering a comfortable lair after descending the stairs under the Godwin Building. The owners are holding a «Retirement Sale,» as it appears the still weak economy for knick knacks and various cute impulsive shopping lures is not what it used to be. This has never been my kind of retail space, but I understand what makes it attractive to others. It is definitely a Middle Earth experience. Very possible to pick up something totally useless, but emotionally satisfying. Wind chimes, spinners for your front lawn, gadgets and miniature toys, are all there to draw you attention and siren song away your better judgment. Nonetheless, it was unsettling to know it too was the victim of the spottiness of the economic recovery, and the whims of customers, as it has decided to close down so the owner can move on to the next phase of life. It’s not that Dragonfly was an institution or anything more than a lovely local shop that can’t survive. But, what does it say about our community that it is willing to let it slip away without a final hurrah?

When I lived at home(and a lot of times in high school before I could drive), this was THE place to go for a last minute birthday/graduation/Mother’s Day/Christmas/sorry-your-boyfriend dumped-you gift when my mom couldn’t drive me to the mall. They have adorable jewelry, random knick-knacks, hilarious cards, super nice and helpful sales people and adorable gift wrapping. Great place to stop by if you’re walking around State Street aimlessly, or looking for a cute gift. Don’t be scared to go down those narrow steps, it’s awesome in here!
