Newtown Swim Club has been a cornerstone of the community for decades. My family had membership here for several years as our son grew, learned to swim, and found friends of like minds and interests. Stepping inside the fence was certainly a time travel experience to about 1975, when the world was warm and sunny. Unfortunately, due to the deteriorating health of the owner, and the economic realities of our time, the days of the Newtown Swim Club are numbered. It is scheduled to close at the end of the 2013 season. We will all miss it. In its place will arise either a town home development, or a mobile home park. Which one depends on the quality of the relationship between the owner, developer and the Township. Right now, the dynamic is not good, and the mobile home plan is the only one in play. Should calmer heads and hearts prevail, the town home proposal could be resurrected as the only concept that makes sense in that location. The mobile home application was inadequate to get any approvals from the local governments involved, but whether they will address the shortcomings, or withdraw it in favor of another, more acceptable plan, remains to be seen. It is truly heartbreaking to see what should have been an easy decision become such a cause celeb, and to watch a man’s life’s work suffer such indignities. Surely, there was a better way; a path not taken, that would have been a benefit to all, and allowed this to be a crowning achievement.
