Well, we’ve taken the first step to moving from the Santa Clarita Valley to our Forever home. We have been working with Tracey at Shea Homes. My wife and I picked a lot located facing the 5th hole on the golf course. There is a lot of steps to go thru until we can move in sometime in October or November. The property is gorgeous. It will be like living in a park. This is not a private golf course… it is open to the public. The air is clear… four miles from the ocean. The sales tax is 8.00%(compare that to 9.75% for the SCV). The property tax is 1.033%(compare that to 1.11% for Los Angeles County). No graffiti, no crime, and no need to carry earthquake insurance… that is correct, Nipomo is not considered an active EQ area. Yes, we are giving up several things(ie. proximity to Corner Bakery, Lucilles BBQ and other things that we have grown comfortable with in the SCV). On the other hand, we have on site restaurants, a private library, heated swimming pools, miles of trails and wonderful seafood restaurants in Avila Beach, Grover Beach, Pismo Beach & Arroyo Grande. P. S. The road system is much better than the Los Angeles area! The roads are maintained San Luis Obispo County! What a concept… no pot-holes, no graffiti and no piles of debris along the sides of the freeway! I will update this review in the ensuing months to provide feedback how the sales and build experience is(including our experience at their Design Center). I will also write a separate review on the moving storage company we decide to use… we are down to two quotes… who will we pick(and why…) stay tuned…

Taste of Trilogy: A Great Deal Everyone faces a fork in the road in their life. You ask«what should I do now?» Retirement offers some of the bigger choices. When, where and how are a few of the important questions we need to answer. Retirement for me and my wife is still several years away, but since we believe wishful thinking often moves things along, we took a closer look at one of those«communities for active adults» on our way back from visiting family in Los Angeles. Trilogy by Shea Homes in Nipomo is about 30 minutes south of San Luis Obispo between Highways 1 and 101. We’ve actually driven through the development 2 or 3 times since it opened in 2005. However, the appeal of living on 1 floor has begun to grow. So, instead of a quick 15 minute drive-by, we accepted the offer on their website.“trilogylife.com”.to stay overnight in the«Taste Of Trilogy» program. We were not disappointed. This is not a review of living in Trilogy. Rather, it’s just a sampling of our experience for roughly 24 hours. «Taste of Trilogy» allows you to stay 1 night in a model home set aside for this purpose, provides a $ 100 voucher for dinner at Adelines… the restaurant in their 35,000 square foot clubhouse… and either a free round of golf for 2 or a massage for 2 in their spa or a combination of golf and massage. This deal was none too shabby! Trilogy is part of a master planned community with nearly 1,000 acres of rolling sandy hillsides with low lying mountains to the east and Pacific Ocean 5 miles to the west. The 10 minute drive from 101 passes through«upscale countryside» with nice farms, horse ranches and a large country club called Black Lake. Trilogy has room for 1100 lots… though just 400 are occupied given the current county restriction stating no more than 100 homes per year can be built. About 75% of these single family residences are adjacent to at least 1 of the 30 holes of golf available for Trilogites and members of the public. We got there around 1PM on a Sunday afternoon. Our contact person, Mark Santiago, one of the in-house realtors, explained the nature of the property, gave a tour of the massive clubhouse(where the Concierge greeted us warmly) and walked through the 6 model homes(there are 11 different floorplans each with a choice of 3 exteriors). Base price for the properties is $ 450 – 850,000. Mark was laid-back, friendly and informative. No half-day time-share hoopla. We took a 30 minute detour to the Farmer’s Market located in a parking lot each Sunday from 10AM to 3PM then unpacked in our«hotel»…a designer furnished home with 3,200 square feet overlooking several holes of golf. The backyard had a patio with large in-ground hot tub connected to a small pool with room leftover for a garden, barbecue, several lounge chairs and an outdoor fireplace. We opened all cabinets and drawers to see what might be behind door #1, #2, etc. but I bet we missed a bunch. Dinner at 630PM in Adelines was fine. The staff seemed to know we were part of a «Taste Of Trilogy» because they kept adding small touches rarely seen. The hostess advised us to wait an extra 5 – 10 minutes for a table by the window«because you deserve it». Our server, Vanessa, could not have been sweeter and more eager-to-please. The manager ensured we were completely accommodated. The menu was somewhat limited, but our selection of caesar salad, grilled chicken pizza and turkey burger… along with a bottle of local chardonnay… was fine. At 9AM Monday, we visited the Sandlewood Spa down the hallway in the Clubhouse from Adelines and between a huge ballroom used for major events(sub-divided for classes and activity groups) and the gym. The spa is gorgeous with a plush atmosphere found in major cities or well-to-do suburbs. Everything, including the lockers, steamroom, plush bathrobes and«relaxation room» was top-of-the-line. My masseuse, Alyssa, had the hands and intuition of an angel. My wife had Adrienne who possessed the skill of an artist. They even sent us a personal thank you card a few days after we returned to San Jose as if we lived in the neighborhood and planned to return later in the week. We should only be so lucky. A Taste of Trilogy is well worth a visit for anyone… especially in their 50’s or above… considering a move to the Central Coast. For $ 200, we received at least $ 500 in services while enjoying resort-like amenities and people who aimed to please. A few minor quibbles. Our house was gorgeous, but had just ½ roll of toilet paper among 3 bathrooms. no paper towels in the kitchen and unfinished bedsheets/towels in the washer/dryer from previous tenants.
