OMG! No WiFi. I’m so sorry for Erin. This is a farmstead. If you don’t like the water, take a dip in the river! And it is true, you can’t walk to the nearest spa! Next time I’m in San Francisco I’m going to complain that there are not enough farm sounds in my hotel!

I just popped out here to add a pin to this little inn, and in seeing the solo existing review, I wanted to offer a counterbalance. When one chooses to travel to an individual farm in rural Iowa, it’s a good idea to prepare oneself for the reality that there may not be amenities found in metropolitan areas. Even something as basic as municipal water — while it’s found in some small towns — may be unavailable. Starting with expectations aligned with reality is a great way to appreciate and enjoy this place. The Cupola Inn is probably not a great option for someone expecting to remain heavily connected to all things hi– and wi-fi… but it’s ideal for someone looking to disconnect from their electronica and plug in to something deeper(nature, a cherished partnership, a compelling book, or a sense of inner peace…). The rooms are small and cozy. Definitely a farmhouse feel to them(they are, after all, situated on a farmstead… hip and mod would be rather out of place). Judy and Dale(I still remember them by name, 8 years after our stay) were lovely hosts and engaging conversationalists. They have embraced passions — she, baking(delicious breakfasts!), he, building/creating primitive farm structures. If you get the opportunity, check out the hand-built barn built of stones found on the property… pretty amazing(and the sort of space that begs for card games or wine by candlelight). As we left, we talked about how we might be able to rally the urban tribe to head down en masse for a little weekend getaway. If you’re interested and schedules align, Dale will take you canoeing on the river that runs along the property. Want a campfire? Right outside your door(and the pit is encircled by a crushed stone path and lovely perennials). The kittens will be only too thrilled to see you, too(when we were there, seven roly poly little felines — maybe 4 months old — greeted us at the door each morning… we understand they’re accustomed to being spoiled by guests). Of course, if you’re allergic or not fond, this place may not be your best option. I didn’t notice any issues with the water(at least none that I can recall… though I am accustomed to Iowa well water… we had traveled to the Cupola Inn to visit with my grandparents, the taste of whose own farm water would remind me I was in the midst of creating fond memories). Could it be easier to get to? Sure. Could the bathrooms be a little more updated? Sure. Is anything truly lacking? That likely depends on why you’ve made this little gem your destination of choice.

I stayed here over the weekend. I don’t even know where to begin. The place seems good because it’s cheap. It’s only about $ 50 per night to stay here, and it’s great as a last resort, since most hotels were totally full due to the Independence Day holiday. You also get a free homemade breakfast, and you can eat it outside on the large porch while watching the birds and cats. Examples of breakfast entrees served are a breakfast quiche, breakfast casserole, and french toast. The couple who owns the inn is friendly too, and they like to come over and chat while you’re eating. Because of this, I added a star to the rating. Otherwise, I would not stay here. There is no internet access, free wi-fi, cell phone service, or even phone in the rooms. No amenities, such as shampoo, conditioner, razor, or soap, is provided. I think this is bad when you’ve been traveling on an airplane. You are provided access to a refrigerator(unlimited sodas and bottled water — though they ran out of water) and microwave. There really isn’t housekeeping service. The trash cans are never emptied(really bad after you’ve been on a road trip), the bed is never made for you, sheets aren’t changed during your stay, and towels are replaced every other day(it seems). The worst part of the stay though was the smell of hydrogen sulfide whenever you ran the water. Because of this, I won’t stay here again. If someone takes a shower, the whole room smells like rotten eggs, and it’s disgusting. The same applies to brushing your teeth. If you brushed your teeth and used the tap water instead of bottled water, you’d have this rancid taste in your mouth. Gross!
