This neat country store is on a little side road within sight of Rt. 122 a/k/a Gulf Road, which is between North Branch and Callicoon Center, right at the intersection with Rt. 128, which leads to Jeffersonville. It’s not fancy or hoity-toity. There are no faux-country trimmings and that’s just fine. It is very well stocked, and run by a congenial gentleman who lives with his family in an adjacent building and is always helpful and nice.(That’s in contrast to Peck’s Market in nearby Jeffersonville, where the staff is unfriendly if you don’t personally know them.) Locally it’s known as the Trading Post, so I’m frankly a little surprised it is listed here as the North Branch Food Mart. Anyway, this store is not very large, but it is crammed with pretty much every available item, both foodstuffs and even some hardware, and there is a deli counter where you can buy a sandwich. There are even video rentals. It’s open all year round and very popular with locals, and visitors during the summer months, and breakfast items are for sale that makes it particularly popular. There is a gas pump outside, as well as a picnic table if you want to eat your breakfast or lunch. I have to say that I’ve never sampled their breakfast items or coffee, but they seem, to be popular. There is an ATM, which is a very important thing to have as there is no other ATM within miles. This is really more of a local institution than a store, a gathering spot and general asset to the community. One caveat: there’s no bathroom here or within miles.
