If there’s one thing M loves more than anything else in the world, it’s shaved ice. Unfortunately, most people seem to view shaved ice/snowballs and snow cones as one in the same. Whenever we pass a place that claims«Shaved Ice!», we run over and are constantly disappointed to see a snow cone maker in the window. Shaved ice isn’t difficult to make, but it’s rare, and so it’s almost become a sport for us to try and find.* So imagine our excitement when we saw a sandwich board in North Conway reading«Shaved Ice!» and directing customers down a dark alley. We peeked in the window, and sure enough there was a huge ice shaving machine and bottles of syrup lined up along the wall! The owner was super nice. We spent a good 10 minutes commiserating over all the shaved ice shops that turn out to be producing snow cones(she has observed the phenomenon too! We’re not insane! Well… maybe just a little). Right now they’re only open weekends, and pretty soon they will be closing for the winter. But next summer we will be first in line for a good, authentic shaved ice! *For clarification’s sake: a snow cone consists of crunchy bits of crushed ice, while a shave(d) ice has the consistency of fresh, lightly packed snow that melts on your tongue.
