I decided to do business with this company after being contacted by the owner’s associate after getting a foundation permit. I had him come out and give me an estimate. We were in a hurry and his prices weren’t bad compared to the other estimates, so we hired him to do the job. He started prompty — even a day early — and everything seemed like it was going to work out at first.
Then came the surprises. At one point, he brought my husband to the home depot to purchase supplies that I think should have been included in the cost, such as the metal pieces that go around the windows on the foundation, and tar and rollers for waterproofing. Waterproofing was listed on the contract, but apparently the supplies were our burden. The foundation also needed to be insulated, per MA building codes, and he didn’t know. When you hire someone to put in a foundation, you would think they would know what’s legal and what isn’t and put that in the contract to begin with.
The time frame to get the job done was another surprise. We were under the impression the job would be completed quickly, but then he went on vacation, giving us a couple days notice. Vacations happen, but if you have one scheduled a short time after you begin a job, it’s common courtesy to inform the people you’ll be doing the work for. He was gone for two weeks on vacation and doing God knows what else. Meanwhile, our house addition sat at a standstill.
Personality wise, he seemed jolly at first, but when I questioned the price of gravel that he wanted to get from his «buddy» he became very unpleasant to work with for the remainder of the job. It turned out that we didn’t even need gravel, but from that point until completion things were very tense at best.
So the bottom line is this: If you’re putting in a retaining wall and the job will only take a day or two max, go for it. If you’re doing something more involved, like a foundation, pick someone else — especially if you like being kept in the loop or tend to haggle with vendors (like gravel vendors) for the best price.
