its nice that there is a puerto rican place in LA. the food was alright but it took a long time and the mofongo was kinda dry

I love this place for their authentic Puerto Rican food. Since I moved to LA, this is the place where I feel like I’m eating in The island. The reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is the Virgin Piña Colada… I asked for it(my fav drink) and the ratio was 95% piña and 5% coconut… When I asked about it… The answer was yes it is in there… Like if I’m lying… So I didn’t continue with the Argument since I’m trying to enjoy my dinner with my hubby. The food is awesome… Environment is great, music fantastic. Service is ok.

I am not from the Caribbean but I went to Miami and the Dominican Republic last year and had a variety of foods to choose from. MOFONGOS(restaurant) happened to be local and satisfying. Totally coming back when I get those caribe cravings.

This was better than we had expected. After seeing a matinée of a theatre production nearby, we wanted to try something different and saw this restaurant. We ordered a glass of sparkling wine and a glass of red wine and started to read the entire menu. We ended up with the Red Snapper with Garlic which was outstanding and fresh. We also had the Mofongo with the Chicken Stew and we would recommend this. The broth in the bowl was so good and the chicken was tender and it was different from anything we’ve ever had. Thanks to the lovely girl who waited on us too. You get a lot of food for your money so don’t over order. We will be coming back to try some of the other dishes soon.

If you want Puertorrican food. This is the only place. Very small but nice place with nice people working. If the service seems slow to you it’s completely normal for the culture. In Puerto Rico no one is in a hurry. That being said I enjoyed the place. Very clean and food was tasty. I got arroz con habichuelas Rojas and biftec encebollado. All in all I went happy. Don’t forget that they make great sandwiches and have delicious Puertorrican coffee!

The best Puerto Rican food off of the island! Soooo savory and a cozy locale in an offbeat area but worth the explore.

My friend took me to the most authentic Puerto Rican food ever. The cutest little hole in wall great music at a volume you can still had a conversation. Can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. The epanada de guava and coffee to top off meal. Excellent!!!

I’ve been meaning to try this place out for a while now and I was finally able to make it out there tonight. I’ve never had mofongo before and after having it here, I am a fan of it. I had the mofongo with pork rinds and lechon asado. This was a very tasty dish. My only minor gripe with this would be that I wish there were crispy pork rinds in there. Regardless, a very good dish. My wife had the half roast chicken plate and that was very good as well. The skin was nice and crispy and even the white meat was nice and moist. The yellow rice was delicious! Unfortunately we didn’t have room for dessert but the pictures of the tres leches and arroz con leche looked bomb. Will definitely have to try them out the next time around.

Admittedly, this was my first time ever trying mofongo(the dish) and Mofongos, and they certainly did not disappoint. Arrived in the early afternoon at the same time as a large family sat down. The service was welcoming and attentive despite catering to the group. The dish itself was delicious. The lechon was a great combination of crispy skin and succulent meat. The base moist and flavorful. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Such a cute restaurant! Doesn’t feel like you are in LA! It was my first time having Puerto Rican food and I wasn’t sure what to order. The server recommended their appetizer platter, that had a bunch of fried balls with different items on the inside. They were really good and way too much food for two people! We weren’t as hungry for our entrees, but they were so good we couldn’t stop eating. They have really cute mock cocktails made from wine too. I had a beer, that went perfectly with the meal. They have huge portions so you’ll definitely have leftovers. If it’s a nice day you can sit on the patio on people watch!

I really like this place a lot. But I wonder if I like PR cuisine more than this restaurant is worthy!!! After all, in Los Angeles(17MILLION people in the county), this is the only Puerto Rican restaurant? With that in mind, their menu is well rounded. Priced fairly. Served with a smile. The problem is — everything is dry. Flavors abound, but even sauces are ‘dry’. I cannot put my finger on what it is… I will definitely be back. But, if I had another choice(and we did up until maybe 2 years ago) for PR food, I am not sure when. I do not want this review to sound harsh. I do hope they read it and realize that their food could be so much better.

I was in the mood to try some authentic Puerto Rican/Cuban/Caribbean cuisine and came across this place. After reading all the raving reviews from the natives I decided to give it a try but I was pretty disappointed. I am not sure how to rate their service as I felt there was none. When I walked in to the restaurant around 3pm there were only 3 tables being served of which 1 of them were ready to leave, yet I was greeted by no body. I decided to just help myself to a table and waited their until I could get the servers attention who was just standing by the register. It took 5 minutes for me to get the menu, 10 minutes to take my order and another 20 to get my food… you get the point. I waited and stared at the server for another 10 – 15 mins so I can pay for my food. I mean come on! Moving on… I ordered the flat iron steak with rice and black beans with a side of crispy green plantain. Portion was huge, easily shareable with another person. The steak had a funky smell as though it was a day old and didn’t taste that great. The black bean soup was ok, I had better. My favorite was the crispy plantains. They were delicious. Nothing about this place was authentic. I’ve had far better Puerto Rican food before and this place was nothing special. Maybe I didn’t get there at the best time or ordered the wrong food. Either way I am glad I tried it and I won’t be returning. If you are in mood for authentic Caribbean/Latin American food try Portos or other Cuban food places in the area. The food and service are far better. Happy Unilocaling!

Loved my café con leche! Not really crazy about the food. I am Puerto Rican didn’t taste like grandma’s and I didn’t feel the love there at all. Very sterile for a PR joint.

I’m originally from NY& occasionally crave my DR/PR rice & beans fix. There’s barely any DR/PR restaurants in Cali… I ordered the pernil. It was good, but I’m used to it being served pulled into pieces, not two huge slices. the pork skin was fried to perfection! I ordered the beef and cheese empanada to go. when I bit into the cheese, it was yellow cheese. WTF, isn’t it supposed to be fried(white) cheese or is it just a NY thing?

My first time having Puerto Rican/Dominican dishes! There was only one server working and he really welcomed us. He gave detailed explanations about the menu, which were really helpful for me. I can’t even recall the names of the dishes we ordered because they are in Spanish. I really liked the food and loved the ambience, but it was kinda too warm inside. Anyway I liked this place:)

Being a native NY’er and loving my Caribbean food I was told by a friend to give this place a try and so I did because it’s hard finding Caribbean food especially in the west coast. So I gave it shot and I honestly wasn’t impressed, the food was meh, nothing to make your mind explode, but the service was just terrible, me and the girlfriend waited for 40mins for our food which was a mofungo, chuletas con arroz con guandules, maduro’s, bacalaitos which were overcooked and burned by the way. I’ve had better Caribbean food at Señor Big Ed’s in cypress, now that spot is where you need to go if you’re craving that home cooking Caribbean food, this place mofungo’s was a meh 2 star spot and that’s giving it a lot. I won’t be going back, thanks but no thanks.

This place is great! I’d lived in NY for a few years while I was in college and got to to try authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I could never really find anything like that in the West Cost, that is until I found Mofongo’s. The service was very fast and friendly. It was my friend’s first time eating PR food so the waiter took the time to explain the menu and make some recommendations. We arrived during Happy Hour so of course we ordered two Pina Coladas. The were refreshing, but lacking in flavor and a little watered down. So I was a little worried that the food wouldn’t be flavorful either, but boy was I wrong. We ordered the Un Poco de Todo Platter to start which comes with a chicken empanada(best thing on there!), beef empanada(super tasty), 4 stuffed potato balls(just as good as Porto’s), a beef tamale, and a stuffed yucca fritter. It was a lot of food so we set aside the tamale and fritter to consume at home. Our main dishes were Shrimp Mofongo and Chicharon de Pollo Mofongo(fried chicken) Shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the chicken was to die for: crispy, tasty, flavor packed breading, and incredibly moist meat. They give you a choice of tostones(smashed green fried plantains) or maduros(sweet fried plantains) on the side. The maduros are too good to pass up and the tostones are yummy dipped in the delicious broth that comes with each mofongo dish. Overall, these guys are wizards with their plantains and the food is really something special. I just hope the drinks are more memorable next time so I can bump them up to 5 stars. :D

The food here is absolutely delicious! As a Florida native with quite a few Puerto Rican friends, I know good Puerto Rican food when I taste it! I’ve also been to Puerto Rico as well, so I can say this food is not only authentic but great quality and delicious. Their pasteles are to die for and their home made hot sauce was a bonus! I’ll definitely be back!

It was my first time visiting on a Saturday afternoon with a friend. The restaurant was almost seated to its full capacity. We were promptly seated and our waiter quickly approached our table to offer menus, take drink orders and offer suggestions. We decided on the: De Todo un Poco platter, carne frita y platanos, and mofongo de lechon with tostones. Everything could not have been more perfect! The meal was so delightful, I’ve already suggested the locale to several friends. I myself can’t believe this neighborhood gem has been tucked away only minutes from my area of residence! Oh, one more thing … I was lucky enough to secure parking in front of the restaurant; however, parking can be a challenge. Silver lining on the cloud is it only takes a few spins around the block to find a parking spot. Happy dining!

The food is amazing but the service is extremely poor. I visited the restaurant on a Sunday at 4:00pm. My family walked in and we noticed the sign«Wait to be seated». Although all the tables were full neither of the two waiters greeted us or acknowledged our presence. After 10 minutes of waiting we decided to sit ourselves in an unoccupied table that still had the dirty plates and drinks from the previous customer. We waited another 10 minutes with neither one of the waiters acknowledging our presence. I stood up and grabbed takeout menus and asked one of the waiters if anyone was willing to clean the table and take our order to which he agreed. Some of you may ask, if the service was so terrible why did I stayed and wait? Because we are Puerto Rican and we drove all the way to Anaheim to have a taste of home. Needless to say we were very happy with the quality of the food. It was delicious. Unfortunately the customer service in this place is terrible. My recommendation: have a staff to handle phone orders and take outs. The waiters should focus on the customers that are on-site.

This is the first time I ate Puerto Rican food so my review would solely be based how good the food is without having any references. My date who is Puerto Rican however said that it is authentic(although he did wish that they had black beans) and the only food better than Mofungo’s was his mama’s cooking.(awww!) Located on a well-known street, it was not so busy on a Sunday afternoon and there was ample street parking. The restaurant is cozy but seating is spread out nicely so patrons do not feel cramp. It has a welcoming family-style ambiance with PR art and posters adorning the walls and under the glass tops of the tables. Our server was friendly and though friends warned me that the wait can get long, we had our dishes out in a timely manner. What we ordered: — Cortadito: Perfect size of espresso with a dash of milk but not so much like a latte. Recommended for people who like to drink their coffee strong. — Mofongo de Lechon: Mofongo is a mix of green platanos, mashed and then mixed with chicharones and is the carbs of the dish. It is then topped with lechon(roasted pork.) I have never tasted anything like it before! The roasted pork was tender and juicy. The mofongo is dense and flavorful with garlic being the main taste. Their sauce ties in both nicely! It was suggested that we get rice to even spread the taste out more but for the most part, this is a stand alone dish. It is also served with sweet platanos to make the whole dish balanced with salty and sweet. — Jibarito de bistic: this is a steak sandwich but instead of bread, they used a large platano, split in half and fried. This was also amazing! Never had a sandwich that used a platano as bread but I’m sold. The platano is not sweet and has more of a dense carb texture and taste like a yucca or a potato. — Sample platter of relleno de papas, alcapurria de carne and pasteles de Cerda: This was a must for me! I needed to try everything! Basically, it is potato balls stuffed with meat(potato is a bit dense in consistency which makes it very hearty,) empanada-type pastry with beef(spicy and great with the accompanying dipping sauce,) and a Puerto rican style tamale which adobo meat filling. If I am not mistaken, the masa is made with a platano base and then wrapped with a banana leaf and boiled. — Rice con gandules: their version of rice and beans. We got the dish to soak up left over sauce from our mofongo dish. Flavorful by itself Overall, everything we had was super delicious and as a first-timer, I was a fan in the first visit and can’t wait to go back. Be prepared for a heavy meal and go hungry. Or maybe because it was our first time going, we over ordered because we wanted to try everything.

We just love love love this place! Whatever we order from this place the food is just to die for! Our server Wesley, he’s not only good looking but was very nice and attentive. He checked on us multiple times! That’s service 101 plus!!! Now the food-today we had the bacalaitos(cod fish with Spanish olive oil and garlic) for appetizer. For the main we had the Arroz con habichuelas rojas with tostones translation white rice with red bean stew and fried plantains. Plus Pollo Rostizado(½ roasted chicken top with garlic onions) with sides of tostones and Arroz con gandules(yellow rice with pigeon peas). Let me tell you the portions were huge! Had to take ½ home. The flavor of the dishes were so appealing to the taste buds. For dessert we had pastel del guava. Great food and friendly service!!! Come on down and try this place!!! U won’t regret it!!!

Holly Molly, this place is great. Very authentic and delicious. I had the arroz con guandules con lechon And the pastelles were on point. Side note. The pastelles are thick so order one at a time or per person. I don’t give five stars normally, but this place is legit and earns it with a smile.

This by far is my favorite restaurant in NoHo! Where can I start? The waiter Pedro is always working when I come. He is so very sweet and he knows the menu in and out. This is the most authentic Puerto Rican food I have had anywhere besides my family’s kitchen. I order the arroz con gandules! Tastes just like Puerto Rico and when I was growing up. Perfect! The empanadas are amazing as well. The monfongo is by far the best! You can customize your dish however you are used to eating it. If you are looking for authentic food from Puerto Rico do not look any further! The atmosphere is cozy. Just like a house in PR. It’s intimate and simple. I prices are super great and the portion sizes are big. I will be back to try the guisado and the chicken mofongo. They also have cola champaña. Just ask! 5 stars for the food and the service!

I hadn’t had Puerto Rican food, and I’m glad I chose this restaurant to experience it for the first time. Service was fast, friendly, and she didn’t make me feel like an idiot for not knowing how to pronounce things. The food was flavorful, tender, and I nearly ate the plate when I was finished. Also didn’t feel like a fat cow when we were through. I’m going to be a regular here, for sure.

Yummmmy! It’s the closest I’m gonna get to PR from here. This place is almost always busy! We always get the fried chicken pieces with arroz con gandules and sweet plantains. Extra side orders of arroz con gandules & sweet plantains please! I can’t get enough of that stuff! Service was really nice from both the gentleman & young lady today. It’s not fast food so be patient, which is hard when I’m starving, but well worth the wait! Just wish this place was closer to me.

I love Puerto Rican and Caribbean food! When I found out about Monfongos, I was excited and hoped that the food would be authentic. **SETTING** Right on Lankershim. Parking will be on the street or one of the residential side streets, where permitted. The restaurant itself is small but very cute. New York and Puerto Rican inspired art on the walls. **FOOD** I ordered the Asopao Camarones(shrimp soup) and the Pechuga Asada(Seasoned Chicken Breast Fillets) Dinner special. The Asopao was great! The soup included rice, olives and shrimp in a mild red sauce. There were plenty of shrimp and all the flavors worked together. The Pechuga Asada was good also. The chicken was well seasoned and grilled well. The Dinner Specials come with one side order and either plantains or a salad. I chose Arroz con Habichuelas Negras(White Rice with Black Bean Stew) for my side order and plantains. All very good! They take reservations for parties of 6 or more. I ordered my food to go, but I’ll be back to dine in and try more menu items.

BEST and ONLY Puerto Rican restaurant in LA. Seriously love this place but you MUST have patience. The wait here is so long because the restaurant is super small. If you want to go there you must not be starving because you will be hangry! The mofongo and all their food is freaking good! you will not be disappointing. Plus you get waiters that are Puerto Rican too! :) You feel like you’re out there!
