This place is a mess. Most of there menu is not available or, in the words of an employee«I don’t know, we might have that in the summer?» They also seem to have lost their liquor license months(years?) ago, but they still have a beer menu posted. So that’s a whole category of things that’s also not available. I was given a gift card, but I have not been able to use it either time I’ve tried because the person behind the counter had never seen one before and had no idea how to ring up an order with one. Everything is also extremely expensive. At least 50 cents or a dollar more than you would expect.

I get my lattes from here almost daily(they are very strong which I like and pretty expensive at $ 3.75 for a small). I also love their chocolate croissants and their chicken and brie sandwich is delicious. The bread on the sandwiches is just heavenly! Sometimes they do not put in all the components of the sandwhich in(some days they leave out the greens, other days they put them in), but in general the food is really tasty. It is quite expensive however(about $ 8 for a big sandwich).

Nice atmosphere and they have some interesting menu items but $ 4 for a small, bitter, and mediocre latte is too pricy! Better and cheaper coffee can be found many places in Northampton besides here, so don’t bother to drop by for your caffeine fix.

Went there for lunch after taking our dog to the vet. I actually felt hungrier after I ate. The food took ~20 min from the time we ordered(not busy at all). I got the Canal Street my wife got the Illinois Hipster. The bread was a horrible vehicle for the ingredients, sparse as they were, bread was very hard, and the Canal Street was very bland. I would not recommend this place nor will I be returning. Slow service, bland food, small portions.

I came here for a quick lunch while on business at Smith. The first thing that struck me about the place was the cold atmosphere — the staff were unfriendly and the air conditioning was literally freezing. I ordered my(overpriced) sandwich and latte — nearly $ 14 for a tiny sandwich and a small latte. I then ate my lunch to the sound of the twentysomething employees complaining about their boss and scheming ways to force customers to tip them. As a server at a real sit-down restaurant — not just a sandwich shop —(and generally a person who understands the ins and outs of customer service), it was incredibly offensive to listen to and left me with nothing but negative feelings toward the place. The food is ok but the atmosphere and tiny portions are not worth the price.

I used to love their sandwiches, but I feel like the quality has gone down. The last time I went, my Canal Street was very bland, dry(due to lack of toppings like mayo and cucumber), and too small. I ended up buying a slice of pizza to compensate for the lack of food.

Had a really bad customer experience here. I ordered the Jungle Book salad and when my salad arrived, it was missing several of the ingredients in it– including basil and papaya, surprising in the summer time. I got a bowl of soggy romaine and paid 10 for it. When I asked the salad maker if he could add the ingredients that were in it, he and the woman behind the counter gave me a very rude response. Pretty disappointing.

My wife and I were very disappointed. Bland food, poor service, messed up order and a bit overpriced. Nice atmosphere and good potential, but we won’t be going back. I was here a year ago and it was much better. Seems to have gone downhill. Specifics: cold customer service on a slow day. Ordered salad without almonds, but they were included, seitan sandwich sounded tasty but was very bland.

40 Green street has really gone downhill in my last few visits, which is such a shame because it used to be my favorite lunch spot in town. The last 3 times I have gone there to order a sandwich there’s been some kind of issue with the baguettes. They’ve either been completely sold out of them(this has happened as early as 1:30 pm) or they have baguettes but try to convince me to have my sandwich on a roll(which is a different sandwich than what’s on the menu and totally messes up the ingredient distribution and at that point I just have to find another place to eat.) The really annoying part is, they don’t tell you that they’re out of a crucial ingredient that’s part of half the menu until you’ve already waited in line and often they don’t tell you until after you’ve already PAID. This place has never had the best customer service, but not informing customers about a major substitution until after they’ve waited, ordered, and paid really not okay.

Oh Green St… you could be so much more… I agree with other reviewers. Wonderful food. Exemplary croissants. Terrific atmosphere. But it severely misses the target on customer service. The staff never greet you… much less with a bit of warmth. The food is served with a perfunctory silence. Would be the best café in town, but instead is bottom tier.

While the food in general, and the croissants in particular, are very good. .. I still find myself annoyed every time I come here. This is largely because the customer service is cold and inhospitable. Which is really too bad because it’s a very cute café. I hope they look at improving their customer service because I really would like to become a regular customer.

Totally love this place! Went for the first time with 2 friends and all loved our sandwiches. I had the canal st. which is their version of a banh mi sandwich-usually done with pork which they were out of but had turkey instead and it still tasted great! Huge sandwich-def enough for lunch and dinner if you’re not super hungry-which I was. Great coleslaw and delish pickle(I love me some good pickles). $ 8.25 for the whole thing-really not that bad for a great sandy in my opinion. Friends got the chicken&brie sandwich and the veggie Sicilian with eggplant artichoke and lots of other good stuff. Fresh ingredients-quick service and nice atmosphere. All around fab in my book!

Really nice, romantic, casual place. I think they do things pretty right — salads are light and fresh and have subtle flavors that are perfectly balanced. Really classy, no frills sandwiches. The café is nice to be in. It’s a good setup between the food and the sitting area. Their croissants are even decent. Their desserts have been good, though they are pretty simple and not exactly the kinds of desserts I am looking for.

What a lovely place for sandwiches/salads! A simple, chill lunch place features fine dining standard ingredients and menu. Very creative sandwiches and salads. Everything on the menu is worth a try. My personal favorites are: 1) Canal Street Sandwich (Vietnamese style sandwich, roast pork, herb mayonnaise, cilantro, carrot, cucumber, daikon radish, and romaine, with lime) 2) Prosciutto and Parmesan Baguette (Prosciutto, Parmesan, with arugula and balsamic vinegar). The thick, sweet yet acidic aroma of Balsamic vinegar and the slight bitter taste of arugula balance well with the meaty taste of prosciutto. 3) Chicken & Brie Sandwich (Lemon and thyme-roasted chicken with brie and herbed aioli on a baguette) Simple and fulfilling– those thick slices of brie are so satisfying. 4) Nicola Kiosk Salad (Hazelnuts, chicken, mango, romaine, cucumber, and Fuji apple with mango and passion fruit vinaigrette) Love the mango, apple, and chicken combination. And their Lemonade is good too!

I always wind up taking half my sandwich home in my handbag. Not because they are large — they are not. But because they are quite rich. After the first time — the Banh Mi, I remember it vividly — I stopped worrying about which one I chose, cause Donna R. is right, they are all good. Quality ingredients across the board, encased in a crunchy, tender length of baguette. Tasty sandwiches, pleasant outdoor seating. If someone’s in town for lunch, this is where I take them. Unless they have kids. It’s a little cramped and little adult for that and besides, kids love the Local Burger. And I kind of wish they sold bags of upscale kettle-cooked potato chips on the side. Maybe they do?

This lovely café transports me to my home town of San Francisco, where phenomenal wine and exquisitely prepared food is available on nearly every corner. I do feel as though I have come to California when I dine or sip here. The big salads are a excellent meal — healthy, full of delicious extras, and leave me feeling so healthy I can indulge in one of the amazing croissants or tarts as well. I use to work in pastry and I am a connoisseur of croissants so please take my advice and treat yourself to these as well. Bön Appetite!

Gotta say, i concur w another reviewer’s comment @ the wine pour– ridiculous. AND, while the space is lovely, & croissant decent, the young hip staff decided that it was time for some retro punk ala«gang of four» at a roar. I left & am not sure I’ll be back.

A great lunch spot. Really tasty sandwiches and salads. Haven’t met a sandwich I didn’t like. Canal St. is a frenchy take on a Banh Mi — don’t go in expecting an authentic banh mi, there’s a reason they don’t call it a banh mi — but it is delicious. The Barcelona combines serrano ham, chorizo, and quince — yum! I love the gruyère– Parisian ham combo as well — a classic. There are some nice vegetarian options — an Indian-spiced seitan sandwich that can be made vegan, and the Illinois Hipster with brie and apple. Can’t go wrong! My favorite salad is the Nicola Kiosk salad — chicken, mango, hazelnuts in a passionfruit vinaigrette — an inspired combination. I have also tried the sesame noodle salad and green papaya salad, but return to the chicken-mango again and again because it is a real stand out.

It isn’t often that I feel compelled to write a Unilocal review immediately after visiting a restaurant, but this is one of those times. I had lunch at 40 Green Street this afternoon, and was underwhelmed. The wheels came off early in our visit, when I ordered a glass of pinot noir. Apparently, the pinot noir was unavailable, not because they were out, but because they keep unused wine in a refrigerator, and it was cold. I’m not a sommelier, but I know wine should be stored at a consistent temperature, and that extended refrigeration is suboptimal treatment of most red wine. I ordered a different wine, and received what probably amounted to a three ounce pour. For a restaurant that places wine at the forefront of its offerings, I was not impressed. I ordered the Canal Street sandwich, and he had the muffaletta. My sandwich was very messy, primarily because the baguette it was served on was so narrow and hard that the contents of the sandwich spilled out every time I took a bite. It was almost as if a semi-stale bread stick had been halved lengthwise and filled. The whole situation was drippy and gross. All of the sandwiches are served with coleslaw(there didn’t appear to be other options), which was actually quite good– more vinegary than mayonnaise-y, which I like. The muffaletta, I was told, was bland. At $ 8.50, that’s disappointing, because authentic muffaletta can be had for $ 5 elsewhere in the Valley.
