Prices were randomly marked sometimes on shelf, sometimes tagged on items — so you have to hunt a little. Imported and specialty item prices were slightly high(as they are with small, independent markets), but not crazy high. And there were items I have never seen anywhere else — olive spreads from Italy(with no garlic or onion, which is impossibly rare for those of us with allium allergies, yet so tasty). Great thin, crispy oatmeal cookies — the ginger ones were so good when we snuck one from our bag while shopping that we went back to get two more packages of them for gifting. Some very good baked goods at checkout counter, made locally. Excellent, odd beverages and cane sugar or maple syrup sodas. Across the street from Hungry Ghost bakery, so stop in there for their great sourdough bread to eat with your deli treats, fresh fruits and wine from State Street. Great convenience; great variety; not awful pricing. And some tasty, interesting local and unusual offerings.

If you’re there to buy wine or liquor Keep It to one bottle if you walking. State Street’s required adherence to no plastic bags in Northampton results in your carrying heavy bottles in a pretty wimpy paper bag with no handles. Provisions has great paper bags with handles! Additionally, Liquors 44 will happily give you a box that you only have to carry a few feet to your car.

DONOTGETANYTHINGPRE-MADE. The wraps, bread or buns are soggy and the ingredients seemed to be old. Lettuce was brown and chicken was smiley. I am talking in particular about the Chicken Caesar Stroller I just paid $ 6.25 for :(

The sandwiches are SOOOOOO good. I love the O-Hara. Everyone in the deli has been super nice to me, and prompt. I would give 5 stars, but so far my experiences with the cashiers haven’t been the best. Some have been straight up rude.

Left when I realized there were no prices on anything on the shelves. the products I looked at where all higher tier(eg. bread was all the $ 4-$ 5 brands in supermarkets). Guess this place relies on customers who don’t look at the cost of things.

Hot and ready bacon mac cheese was mediocre at best. Need a better selection of hot food and at a better price. I’ll try a nice deli sandwich next time.

I always come here for packed-to-the-max salads. They’ve changed over the years, but still good. They do run out. Deli has nice lunch specials.

The cashier with braces has a nasty attitude, not worth it when Serios is right next store, and they don’t take it personally when you walk up to pay for your groceries.

Great neighborhood grocery store, and a good alternative to Stop & Shop, even though it’s pricier than the bigger markets. Staff is friendly and helpful.

I was in need of a food basket to a friend in need. I contacted State Street Fruit Store via email and got a prompt response from Rich Cooper. After explaining what I wanted I call him with my credit card number. I was in Boston and unable to get to Northampton so they kindly delivered the gift for me. My friends sent a thank you note and said it was the nicest food basket they had received. They were so impressed they even called the store to let them know how pleased they were. Rich and State Street Fruit had great customer service and I would recommend them to anyone in the area!

I’ve been here for two things, a bottle of whiskey to give as a holiday gift, and many, many sandwiches. First, the staff is very knowledgable and helped me get a great bottle of whiskey for B at the holidays(to match the glassware set I also got him, obviously). I wanted to spend a little bit more than he would on himself, but without getting something to crazy — Glenfiddich 12 it was. He loved it. Second, the deli. Oh my, the options. It’s very basic(ex: no prosciutto), but they do it very well and also have a ton of prepared food, though I’ve never had any of it. They have a list of sandwiches, but you can add and subtract and make your own. They even do a half sandwich. The homemade borsin cheese spread is delicious, has a slight kick. The pickle on the side is a great touch and much appreciated. They are perfect to grab and take back to the other. Beware of the brownies though, too delicious and large.

I have so many great memories of State Street. From the wine and liquor tasting I accidentally stumbled into before a final exam(don’t worry, I still aced it in my stupor) to the frequent visits I’d make on my way to and from campus. They no longer sell the banana walnut chocolate chip cookies, but my God those were good. Love the wine and spirits selection. Surprise surprise. If you need recommendations, ask. Oh State Street, I miss you already.

Simon said, try the hot bar. SO I did. No lie, it’s a bargain, it’s huge, it’s totally decent. Varying dishes through out the week, havent’ tried them all, but I will continue the tour. Ginormous chicken chimichanga fed mom and me for 6.50. Que Bueno. I must go back for the pot pie.

Good place to pick up almost anything you need. Its within walking distance so it can satisfy a craving for chips, dessert or beer. They have a nice prepared foods section and deli and a nice stock of fresh produce. The attached liquor, beer and wine store is great, they have a lot choices of more up and coming tastes. Plus your only across the street from the Hungry Ghost.

When I leave this town, I think I will most miss the sandwiches here. Easily the best in town. Enormous portions. Their desserts are also top-notch. Curried turkey FTW.

I found this little shop while perusing the neighborhoods of Northampton, one of my favorite places to visit. I wanted to find somewhere that had local groceries, and prepared foods, and what I found was so much more! It was quiet and clean, with friendly staff that greeted me upon entering. Their prepared salads and sandwiches looked dee-lish, but I soon got distracted when I found the liquor store on the other side! I crossed over to the boozy aisles, and was promptly offered help from a young guy. He showed me through some of his favorite beers in the fridges, and pointed out some really popular locals brews as well. I took his recommendations and got 4 bomber bottles for just about $ 20. Perfect!

The deli is excellent. You can get a decent-sized sandwich for CHEAP. Good salads as well. State Street is a convenient place to shop for basic necessities if you live locally and don’t want to make the trek to Big Y or Stop and Shop. Only complaints are the groceries are a bit overpriced and the produce isn’t great.

The main section of State Street is full of narrow aisles stuffed with chromatically diverse specialty box foods, staff who aren’t really sure where anything is and a fair selection of tea. Where this place really stands out is its deli — a sandwich half from here will keep a full grown lumberjack sated for days and surrounding their lunch counter are more cheeses than you could shake an ak-mak at. Be careful to eyeball how each preparer is going about his trade… if you time it right you can get the worker who is in an Arthur Dent head-space of meal crafting and be the envy of all you brought along to try out their gut busting lunch goods. They don’t sell alcohol on the North side but you can grab your hooch right next door at State Street Wine & Spirits.

Holy Turkey Pot Pie! Mongo portion, super tasty, and I’m lovin’ the flaky crust. This masterpiece has single-handedly elevated the status of the hot-bar!

State Street Wine and Spirits was my go-to wine shop. With a free wine tasting of a red and a white every Friday afternoon from 4 – 6, what’s not to like? The staff was incredibly helpful and always willing to chat about wine and the prices were unbelievable. They have monthly wine specials that are a great way to try a new wine without worrying about the price. I didn’t know how good I had it. These people loved wine and I loved these people. In regards to the other side, the«Fruit Store,» I spent a lot less time here, and frankly it seems to be staffed by discontented high-schoolers. But I won’t hold that against them, after all I was a discontented high-schooler who needed a job once. The dry-goods food has a tendency to be dusty, but they carry a wide array of fruit and in a pinch this was my go-to pick up a half-gallon of milk on the way home spot.
