Very rude staff. They were standing around gossiping rather than helping customers. I was considering a sewing machine purchase and standing in that area for 5 minutes. No one asked if I had questions or needed help. You’d think for a big ticket item, someone would be sure to be supportive to close a sale. No one came by. On my way out, I asked them if they honored competitor pricing because the machine I wanted was $ 150 more than what I saw advertised elsewhere. The woman at the cutting table just said«no» and rather abruptly. Her attitude showed me they just didn’t care about customer service. She could have said something like, «unfortunately, we cannot honor competitor prices on sewing machines as those prices are set by the manufacturer» or something like that. Seems like a course in basic selling 101 or customer service should be part of their training process. I’ll never go back there.(By the way, the store is filthy. The machines were dusty. And, their fabric selection is dated.)

I’ve been sewing since I was tall enough to reach the foot pedal, and as the years go by brick and mortar fabric shops(and sewing) are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Those of you on the more crafty side probably noticed Hancock is one of those chains that closed several of their locations, but their threads are still holding strong in Northbrook. This place is a regular visit for me, especially around Halloween when I’m throwing together a last minute costume accessory for my kids. The selection isn’t as extensive as some of the other shops out there, but I recommend them for notions and everyday fabrics like quilting cottons. A good place for batting, foam, and basic upholstery needs, if you promise not to tell too many people I’ll let you in on a secret. This location has lots of storewide sales including great deals on patterns. The staff here is extremely helpful and friendly and they are true fabric/sewing buffs. Take note that this location is understaffed at times and checkout can be slow, so just leave yourself enough time when you stop in. Compared with some of the newer craft/fabric store giants, this place is definitely a bit more nostalgic in feel. I like it though, because it reminds me of the stores I used to visit with my mom as a kid. With great parking, helpful staff, good sewing basics, and great pattern sales, this place is where you can find me for buttons, ribbon, and Superman cape accessories. Happy sewing!
