Salon 4x

I am not really even sure how to begin this review because I’m still a little bit in shock with how great of an experience I just had at Salon 4x. (I’m not a very emotional person but I think the condensation coming from my eyes are what people refer to as, «happy tears»). I don’t normally write reviews but I just wanted to share my experience with anyone who is right now desperate and looking for help. Being grateful is one thing, but I also wanted to share with the team at Salon 4x how much their help meant to me.
To give you a little background info, on Sunday I went to a salon that I have been going to for years, for what I thought would be a simple root touch-​up. I do not believe in bashing businesses. I work in the beauty industry too and I completely understand that some days you are swamped and human error happens. I also take responsibility in that I should have been more informed about the condition of my hair and been more verbal about my distress. Long story short, I walked out of the salon five hours later with melted hair, chunks of hair falling out, a burning scalp and more importantly, extremely shattered self-​esteem. I believe hair is a size-​able part of ones identity and the anxiety I felt walking out of that salon is unlike anything I experienced before and something I wish upon no one.
After days of feeling completely defeated, I called up Salon 4x, emotionally prepared to have a stylist tell me that I was beyond repair and that I would need to shave my hair. I expected the worst, didn’t think it was worth hoping for the best… until I made the call.
Immediately from the start of speaking with the receptionist (I didn’t catch her name, I will edit next week when I get it) my heart started to lift. I think a huge deciding factor of whether or not I book an appointment (regardless of how talented the hair design team is) has to do with how accommodating the receptionist is. The receptionist was not only welcoming but also really patient, knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions or concerns I had over the phone. It’s always hard to find people that can relay that type of warmth over the phone but she nailed it. She was even more lovely in person. Like I said, my hair was visibly in disaster… there was absolutely no judgement from her or the fellow stylists.
I met with Markelly (I, for sure, spelled her name wrong but I’ll edit next week). She took me to the bowl to have my hair washed. She was extra cautious with my stringy, mushy hair whilst shampooing. I think she could tell I was nervous and was so beyond remarkably comforting, reassuring me with every step that everything would be ok and we would be able to set me back on the right track. She always made sure to ask if water temperature was alright and asked me at the most appropriate times if there was anything I needed. I cannot stress enough how great she was and easy to get along with.
Kelly who was my hair designer is most definitely a hair guru/​ninja/​wizard of some sort. I am surprised she is not a director of a major hair conglomerate. She carefully examined my hair. She noted areas of severe damage and concern immediately. My hair was the consistency of gum when wet so I was insanely impressed she could analyze hair condition so quickly. I feel like Kelly is the truest testament to how important it is for stylists to be knowledgeable not only with product but hair as well. She quickly customized a hair treatment that would begin my hair recovery. She was 100% honest with me from the get-​go. She told me that this would be a process and that my hair would need time to heal and strengthen. It wouldn’t be a quick fix. I really appreciated this the most. I am by no means an expert on hair and for someone to tell me what I needed to hear and not what I wanted to hear was refreshing. Kelly educated me every step of the way on what she was doing and why she was taking those steps. She also gave me information on how to keep my hair in health at home. After my treatment, she cut my hair to preserve it’s shape and to hold well during the next few months of healing. My hair feels like hair. It is by no means healthy and or what it once was, but the that fact that Kelly took what my hair was (a gelatinous blob) to human hair is… magical sorcery. I am still shook up with the outcome.
The overall ambiance of the salon is light, positive and has the best energy. The whole team seems to love being there and doing what they do. They were discussing the extended Starbucks menu together. It made me feel super comfortable and like I was just hanging out at a friend’s very upscale interior-​designed house.
I want to remind you that I initially walked into the salon thinking I would be walking out with a GI Jane-​esque new do and having to cancel any and all social obligations when I got home for the next few years. But here I am, smiling.

I met Kelly a few years ago when she worked at another place. She is the sweetest person and always does my hair the way I like it. I was SO happy to find that she opened her own salon very near my home. This is my new go-​to salon.

Amazing! Kelly and her team are top notch. I have curly, thin, dry and highlighted hair that for years have been looking to get healthier. I’ve been to top salons throughout NJ, Luxe, Visage and others that made promises to transform my hair with chemical treatments that fried and damaged my hair more until it broke off. I have been going to Kelly now for maybe 8 months. Obviously being a little hesitant on stylists promises, I let her take steps during each appointment to get my hair more healthy. All I can say is I’m a total believer. I’ve never written a Unilocal review, but had to for her. She is sweet, informative, talented and most of all experienced and really cares about you and your hair. This is the first time in years I feel like I only need to spend 20 minutes on my hair instead of an hour and walking out the door still unhappy. She is a total gem and the salon is beautiful that her husband designed. Dawn is another stylist I would highly recommended. Thanks Kelly!!!

I wish I had found out about this salon sooner! Had a haircut with Dawn this morning and she was great! No, she was awesome! She took her time to cut my thick permed hair and I loved the results. I’m definitely switching salons and go to Salon 4x from now on. The interiors is clean and very well designed. Kelly, the owner, was also very friendly and nice. Highly recommend!

Have been trying to find a salon in NJ now that I live here. I’ve been looking for a more modern salon that is comparable to the NYC salons I’ve been going to for the past 7 years. I took a chance based on good reviews here, and must day I’m very impressed! Jelly was fantastic, asking questions and talking through what I wanted first. She was very personable and friendly and did a fantastic job cutting my hair! So happy to have found a place so close to home.

Friendly and nice décor. This salon has been only opened for 5 – 6 month. Owner and hair designer Kelly has been taking care of my hair for past 8 years. She has over 15 years of this field, and I can say that she knows what she is doing. Atmosphere of a salon is very cozy. It is very modern with fancy wood work but in a contrast, lightings by washing stations are very vintage décor and somewhat urban city like. I highly recommend this salon to anyone.

I will definitely recommend Kelly for anybody who is looking for a good hair designer in the area. She is nice, consistent and punctual. I also like the interior– clean and classy.

I’ve been going to Kelly for years, and she is a fantastic stylist. I have very fine, straight hair, which can be challenging. I’ve done various styles and lengths over the years, and she’s always able to get the cuts just right. I highly recommend her!!!

a new hidden gem! found this tucked in between a bagel shop and a nail salon! everything is brand new with an amazing interior and very cozy. Kelly was super nice and I really like my new hair cut and color — looking forward to come back soon to get a perm!

I’ve been looking for better hair salon for years now, and this is best salon I could find. I had my hair cut from Kelly on Friday. I have untameable rising hair on both sides and back of my head that consumes lots of hair spray when it’s short. But she took care of it with her professional skills and sense as hair designer. Now I look more young and dandy. I got many compliments from people I know today. This place certainly is a salon I can be loyal to. I’m so happy that no more jumps from salon to salon seeking for better one.
