John H Nuffer Elementary School

I passed a background check to volunteer at the half-​day state preschool program for four year olds. It’s a safe and stimulating environment. The emphasis is on English language development, reading comprehension, and socio-​emotional competence (reading body language or understanding social situations) but the instructor and her two teaching assistants are bilingual. The afternoon session begins with lunch where children are encouraged to pour their own milk from the pitcher or serve themselves salad with tongs. The school district tries to be a partner with the families by having short monthly parent meetings as well as workshops.

There are two different after-​school/​summer school programs available at this school, A.R.C.C. and A.S.E.S.
A.R.C.C. stands for Academic Recreational Child Care, and A.S.E.S. stands for After School Education and Safety. To my understanding A.R.C.C. is a paid program with no wait list and A.S.E.S. is a free program with a wait list. Both programs offer great incentives to Norwalk’s children.
The teachers and office staff at Nuffer are very compassionate and really care about the education and needs of their students.
During the school year, traffic and parking here gets really busy, as there are 2 other schools close by. The traffic enforcers (?) for both Nuffer and Los Alisos schools are really nice and do their job well.
