Mahzu Sushi is legit. We had baked mussels, the Norwich Roll and the Sashimi Dinner. The sashimi was very delicious, the Norwich Roll was packed with fish but I prefer nori over the soy wrapper. We’ll be coming back.

I am an avid sushi eater… I know the best when I taste it. I usually sit at the sushi bar and one day, I was talking to David. I had asked him if he was serving otoro sushi. For all you newbies out there, otoro is the best, highest priced cut of sushi from a tuna, located in the tuna’s belly. There are three sections(otoro which is the best, toro, and chutoro) but I am always requesting otoro since it is the best tasting piece of tuna, but expensive. Anyways, to make a long story short, David said that he had otoro, and would make me several sushi pieces. He had talked a big game and played the part too by going to the kitchen to get what I thought at the time, would be what I wanted to be served. He ended up grabbing the freshest piece of regular tuna(maguro) and served me it, pretending that it was otoro. What pissed me off the most was he charged me otoro prices($ 10 a piece/sushi) for REGULARMAGURO. I CALLEDHIMOUTONIT and HEENDEDUPRUNNINGBACKTOTHEKITCHEN, BECAUSEHEKNEWHEUNDERHANDEDMEAND I CAUGHTHIM. Moments later, he had his server approach me saying that we will only charge you the regular price of tuna sushi. If you are a complete noob to sushi and you request a high tier cut of fish, BEWARE. Very food sushi and creative names for the items on the menu. The ambiance is pretty good toowith low lighting and far eastern music. I also like the sushi boat for multiple people. Different and clever idea. Super quick service in restaurant and for pickup as well if you order to go. Also other items besides Sushi available.

I’m a vegitarrian and happen to work right down the road, I get vegetable roll and miso soup, every time it is so fresh when I get my takeout… there have been orders I have place www with meat/fish eaters and everything is always separte. I have done this at many places and feel to disappointed when I cannot eat my food because they throw everything in one box! Not only convienece but also thoughtfulness has given mahzu *****

The all you can eat sushi on Sunday’s is possibly the most incredible sushi on the planet. I am here every Sunday– and I have never had one piece of sushi that has not been PERFECT. David and Jerry do an amazing job– this place is a must for sushi snobs!!! Plus the waitstaff is also so sweet!

How is the services at Mahzu now??? Since the last review, I haven’t been back to this restaurant at all. Because I heard that the AYCE price has been up to $ 25.00 per person all you get is sushi. Now I rather drive 50 minutes to rocky hill, CT that cost $ 18.99 weekdays and $ 19.99 weekends, you get unlimited soup, salad, appetizers, tempura, sushi and sashimi. The name of that restaurant is SUSHIHOUSE Go give it a try.

Good sushi, good prices, all you can eat Sunday! The parking lot is a little sketchy but just be aware of where you are. There’s one girl that’s incredibly rude that works there — but everyone else is awesome. You can sit at the bar, take it to go, or sit in a booth. I’ve never had bad food there and I eat there twice a week. The sushi chefs are nice and very fast. Just be patient on Sunday’s.

We came to Mahzu on a whim. Turns out it was All You Can Eat sushi, which we didn’t know about, so yay! I had done some research on Unilocal about the place and many reviews had said that service isn’t that great. And boy was that true. Lets start with the pros: 1.) good sushi selection. They had this«salmon skin» roll which was smoked salmon skin. Very interesting. We liked it. And I just thought it was cool because we had never seen this at another restaurant before. 2.) miso soup was good. 3.) big menu not only for sushi but many other dishes as well. CONS: 1.) The service… just no. We were greeted as we entered and were sat down immediately. But then it took forever for someone to come check on us. The food was slow coming, but then again the place was All You Can Eat Sushi and I know that sushi isn’t that fast to make, so we kinda just shrugged that off. However, while we were eating, they didn’t come back to check on us at all. Not to ask if we wanted to order more or anything. Very weird. Then when we got the check, they still didn’t come back to get the check from us. We just ended up bringing it up to the front desk. 2.) The sushi rice had wayyyy too much vinegar in it. It took away from the sushi flavor. I understand it usually has a bit of a tang to it, but this was like they took vinegar and made it into rice form. The sushi wasn’t outstanding, but it was good. We will go back. And we would recommend, however, don’t expect great service… and by great service, I mean service at all.

I have mixed reviews about this place. Ordered an entrée, which was good, but it was more American than Japanese. Green beans and mash potatoes. The rolls were good. The shumai and gyoza were my favorite.

For a restaurant that wasn’t even half full the service was slow and items we asked for were not delivered. My husband asked our waitress for an additional item after our initial order and she looked at him and turned and walked away. Come bill time our waitress was rude and insisted on money that did not belong to her be kept by her. She personally made our dining experience a negative one with her pissy attitude. Business lost.

I read a number of poor reviews(and some good ones) of Mahzu on Unilocal. However, because I wanted sushi and didn’t want to drive 30 minutes to another restaurant I like, I decided to give it a try anyway. I had a seaweed salad and miso soup to start with nice, big portions of each. The crispy roll was phenomenal. The spicy tuna roll and volcano roll were delicious as well. Service was prompt and the server was polite. She even brought over a complementary seafood salad that was just OK. No complaints for free food, though. My first experience at Mahzu was good. I hope the next one is as well as I plan to go there again for sushi – maybe takeout.

All I can say is… Eyelashes. Eyelashes. Eyelashes. Ordered take out when I moved to the area for a quick meal after a long day. About to kick the lights off, enjoy a movie and some sushi… but open my to go container first. SOMANYEYELASHES. Eyelashes literally adorned my entire meal. DISGUSTEDBEYONDBELIEF. I’ve posted this review before, but magically no longer see it. So folks, check your food for this foreign and unwelcome accompaniment to your food. YUCK!

Upon our arrival, we weren’t greeted and seated. My three friends and I were confused as to whether or not we should seat ourselves but after two min of looking at each other, a waitress finally took notice of us and sat us. The food was decent. We ordered the sushi and sashimi for 2($ 45.95) which came in a big boat with a side of shrimp tempura roll($ 5.50). While that can feed three people, one of my friend whose vegetarian ordered an avocado roll($ 3.25), a sweet potato roll($ 6.25), and kappamaki roll($ 3.25) and a drink: a scorpion bowl($ 7). The reason why I gave two stars is because they over charged us. We ordered a spicy mayo but it never came. So we asked another waitress for the spicy mayo and when she brought it to us, the first waitress that took our order came and gave us another. So we were stuck with two spicy mayo but that didn’t really bother us. We were just pissed at the fact that they charged us three spicy mayos and my friend had to ask for his drink again because they had forgotten to make his drink. Not only that they were negligent with the customers but they clearly needed to communicate with the other wait staff members and get the orders right. As a waitress, customer service is everything. I’ve been waiting on people on quite some time and so I understand how it is as a waitress. However, Mahzu wasn’t even busy. There’s wasn’t a lot of people eating so there was really no excuse for their poor service. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Mahzu is located in the newly renovated Shop Rite plaza. It’s directly to the right of the grocery store and conveniently located in the«busy» section of town– everything you need is here on West Main St. Therefore, it’s easily accessed by 395AND route 2 and as such, minutes from downtown Norwich. H and I have been patrons of Mahzu since 2007(I was an undergrad at UConn working in Norwich) and we actually sought out Mahzu when visiting my ILs in town. Upon walking in, you’ll notice a whiteboard of specials– it never hurts to try something listed. It’s also very«Japanese» in design, but a number of staff are actually Chinese in ethnicity. Regardless, the majority of the staff members(sushi preparers, hostess, waitress, bus boy, etc) are nice overall. I’ve never been treated poorly. We’ve had SO many different things during our numerous dine-ins and take outs. You can’t go wrong with salmon teriyaki(it’s a better deal to get the bento– if that’s in your budget). If you’re in the mood for sushi, try to come in on Sunday. Mahzu offers«All You Can Eat» for $ 19.95/person. My H and BIL are big boys(250+ lbs per person) and they’re both extremely happy after their second FULL plate of sushi.

A wonderful experience. I was in town on business and met some clients here for dinner based on the reviews here. We started off with a Hamachi Roll and some Peppered Tuna. The Hamachi Roll was very good, but the tuna was fantastic. My God… I’d go here and just eat a double order of this. It was served with some matchstick cucumber which countered the good amount of pepper on the tuna. We also had a Crunchy Fish Roll and an AK-47 Roll. The AK-47 roll I liked more than the CFR but both were fantastic. We all got the Calamari Salad which I would order again if I’m back down that way. This was washed down with a 22oz Kirin Ichiban which was very cold.

What was not to like about Mahzu! This little sushi restaurant offers authentic and artfully crafted sushi and sashimi, as well as Japanese entrees. We prefer to sit at the raw bar, because it is entertaining to watch David and his chef’s create these beautiful dishes! This last visit we enjoyed the Norwich roll, the Phoenix and the special named the David roll. They were all fantastic, beautiful to look at and tasted so heavenly. Their use of ponzu, and infused roe make for a delightful and refreshing meal. Not to mention, the squid salad with cucumber is addictive. I highly recommend sushi lovers frequent Mahzu. There is a reason they have been successful in the city of Norwich!
