Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio

The tour is about an hour and very informative. We had a small group so it was nice and personal, however I will say that they enforced the «photo pass ticket» maybe because of the small group. If you are interested in Frank Lloyd Wright and/​or architecture then this tour is definitely well worth it. We were visiting Chicago for the weekend and staying downtown– it was only a 25 minute Über ride to get here. I’m not sure what else is around here, it does kind of feel like in the middle of nowhere (from a tourism perspective) but definitely something worth venturing outside downtown Chicago for. The tour guide was extremely knowledgable about everything and spoke about Franks personal life toward the end of the tour, in addition to his works.

My parents and I had a Saturday afternoon to kill in the Chicagoland area. I knew very little about FLW, only what my aunt and uncle had told me about him. We did the neighborhood audio tour, well worth it. I was quite impressed with his homes in the Oak Park neighborhood. I wish we had done the tour of his home, but seeing the homes and hearing the audio commentary whetted my appetite to visit here again with my wife.

We did the full monte, home and neighborhood. I would recommend doing just the home tour, and getting a map to self-​guide for the neighborhood. The home is fascinating, and well woth teh tour. I learned a lot about Wright, and how he influenced architecture.

I visited on a field trip during high school and was bored out of my mind.
I visited a few months ago as an adult and loved it. A group of friends and I redeemed our groupons together, and we loved the tour. Our tour guide was beyond knowledgable and could answer any questions our group asked. It was amazing to learn the history of architecture before us, and it amazes me how influential one man was throughout the country.
This tour is definitely worth your time and money.

This is a great tour. The 5 bucks to take pictures is a bit weird, particularly when they do not enforce it during the tour… cell phones and cameras popping off all the time. Walk the neighborhood after… ten more homes to see from the exterior!
Oak Park is an easy train ride from downtown… if it is not raining… a nine block walk that is fun on a sunny day! Downtown Oak Park has a great Greek restaurant too!

Joined Unilocal just to leave this review as we were so impressed with the excellent service we received here. We arrived very late in the day and I was fully expecting that we would not get in. The lady in the shop let us join the last tour that had just left. She also rapidly processed the books we wanted to purchase.
The tour was great and the tour guide very knowledgeable. She was keen for us to ask questions but she gave so much information that there was rarely a need.
We love the art deco design so wherever we looked was simply beautiful. I am not sure how anyone could live a family life inside a work of art, but Frank clearly only ever saw how he could make it better.
But what took the experience above and beyond was at the end. A heavy thunderstorm had rolled in while we were on the tour. There was my wife and I and two other ladies sheltering from the deluge and waiting for a taxi when Mark who worked there offered to drive us all to the train station, even though the traffic was very heavy. Such a kind and generous offer and so appreciated. I can’t praise our experience enough.

The one-​hour tour is short and sweet. Any longer, and honestly, I get bored.
The house and studio are well-​maintained. The tour is $ 17 per person, which is reasonable. For a period of time, they had Groupons too, but I missed out on that. so Google around, maybe they have another deal going on soon?
Today was a beautiful sunny spring day too. I would recommend visiting when the weather is good since a few short portions of the tour take place outside.
Parking around the area is EXTREMELY convenient and free.

Our tour guide was awesome! She was very informative and you could really tell how much she loves FLW’s architecture! Definitely recommend this tour as well as a walk around this amazing Oak Park neighborhood! These Victorian homes are a sight to see. Thank you

Hubs and I came here on Valentine’s Day… we had a great time and our tour guide, Michael, was wonderful and very knowledgeable.
Highly recommend this tour if you’re in the Oak Park area. Plan to spend about an hour here; longer if you want to browse the gift shop.
A little disappointed that there was no time set aside at the end of the tour for questions. Not sure if tours are always like this, or just on the day we visited.

I do NOT recommend this tour for individuals who are handicapped (use any sort of walking accommodations), cannot walk up stairs or stand for long periods of time. Nothing is handicap accessible.

We tried to do this on our own, it was kind of hard to navigate. Definitely recommend using a guide. It was really cool to be able to walk around the beautiful city and see the architecture though! Definitely worth the time spent!

I’ve done this tour twice now and have enjoyed it each time. Great little history lesson and glimpse into the life of Frank Lloyd Wright, some fabulous architecture, and interior design. FLW fans will enjoy this for sure, but anyone who can appreciate good design, architecture, art, history, etc. should enjoy it too.
Easy/​free street parking, and close to a cute downtown area in Oak Park. This is just 8 miles or so from Chicago, so it’s definitely doable for any Chicago tourists.
They also have a great gift shop not just of tchotchkes, but of attractive, useful home goods and gift options.

This tour is so good I did it twice in one month! First with some relatives, and it was so fabulous I brought my partner back and he loved it as well.
I’ve been to a couple Frank Lloyd Wright houses before, but this tour of his house and studio provided insights into both the man and his architecture. It puts his work and principles in a very real band accessible light.
The structures are brilliant and lovingly restored, and the tour guides are informative and passionate about Wright. This place is really a gem.

We had our wedding reception at The Rookery and always wanted to check out Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and Studio in Oak Park. We finally took the second to last afternoon tour the Sunday before Christmas. Tickets are $ 17/​adult and an additional $ 5 for a photo pass to take pics during the tour. It was great because it wasn’t busy at all and we ended up with a personal guided tour for our party of 4. Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging throughout the tour. My mom asked a lot of questions, which our guide was able to answer. Since it wasn’t busy, we were the only ones in the house. We were able to take our time to enjoy the architecture and details in every room. I really loved the stained glass windows, built ins, first use of recessed lighting, and integration of nature into the house.
Afterwards, our guide was kind enough to point out additional FLW houses to check out on Forest Ave. We took a walk down the block to the end of the road where a head bust of FLW looks down the street. Some of the houses had plaques describing the house’s history. I can imagine the walking tour would be worthwhile during warmer months.

. So we jumped at the chance to visit his studio during our visit to Chicago.
We went on the walking tour, which came with an audio tour of the nearby houses. It was the most relaxing and inspiring part of our vacation. I would just love love to live in a neighborhood like this! It’s so up our alley, we’ve been in a 1933 art deco home in Houston for 6 years and couldn’t live in anything else.
We definitely did the most damage in the gift shop that we’ve ever done anywhere. Among many things, the best prize were my favorite umbrella ever. OMG. Still just dying about it.

Wonderful experience. Follow the tour (30 – 40 minutes) of home and studio. add 5 $ for the right to shoot photos (too bad!!) but it’s worth it. Afterwards you take 2 – 3 hours walk through The Park to see about 25 others houses!

i love architecture and this tour was so worth it! i was disappointed that the tour ran less than an hour (50 minutes) and felt that the tour guide rushed us throughout. there were some rooms that i (and a big part of our group) wanted to spend more time in, but we had to «keep moving along.»
besides that wonderful experience and i learned a lot!

A very worthwhile tour if you’re an enthusiast of architecture or design. Simply amazing that FLW designed this as a 21 year old while under the employ of Louis Sullivan. In comparison to other fin de siècle homes in Oak Park, the design is startlingly modern, and still feels fresh.
Our docent-​led tour took about an hour and covered both his home and studio. Standout rooms included the barrel vaulted playroom on the top floor which houses the keyboard of a grand piano (the bulk of it is under the stairs to the balcony). The drafting room in the studio is an amazing space, making the most of natural lighting through clerestory windows. The balcony and domed roof is supported by a system of robust chains, a system similar to those used by other famous domes including St. Paul’s in London.
The Home and Studio Tour along with the Unity Temple tour are highly recommended for Frank Lloyd Wright aficionados.

If you’re a huge FLW fan, this is a must-​see on your list. Our tour guide, Margaret, was quite informative, so it didn’t feel too terribly long and dragged out. Walking around the neighborhood also should be sufficient, and there’s a FLW park around the corner — quite cute.

My S.O. is a structural engineer, so the FLW Home and Studio Tour was a must on our recent trip to Chicago. I must say, it ended up being my favorite part of the trip.
We ordered our tour tickets online the night before. INVEST IN A PHOTO PASS. I wish we had. I didn’t realize when we bought the tickets that you need to buy a photo pass to take pictures in the home. It’s only a few dollars more.
Anyway, we were coming from the Loop and didn’t want to be late, so we ended up leaving an hour early. We arrived at the house at 9:30 am, 30 minutes before our tour started. Luckily, the gift shop was open and we were able to keep warm in there while waiting for the tour. Everyone was very pleasant and the gift shop was well stocked.
The tour was just fabulous. I wish I remembered our tour guide’s name, because she was amazing. Obviously well versed in the history of the house, she was able to answer all our questions. Not only that, she pointed out the beautiful design elements in an intelligent way. The house was so beautiful, I definitely regretted not buying the photo pass.
If we come back in the warmer months, I want to do the neighborhood tour. The houses, even the ones FLW didn’t design, are just gorgeous. Would be a great way to spend an afternoon.

Spectacular! I’m so excited I can hardly calm down enough to write this review! Let it be known that I kind of stumbled upon this tour. I headed out to Oak Park to check out the hood because some friends said I would dig it. I grabbed some lunch, strolled the streets, checked out Hemingway’s birthplace and museum and then realized I was smack dab in the middle of the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District (it’s hard to miss since his name is next to every road sign in the area). So I thought, what the hell, I do live in a city known for its architecture so it seems fitting to check out one of the big dogs.
I walked the half mile from town and ended up in a gorgeous neighborhood. I walked around the Frank Lloyd Wright gift shop (located in the previously occupied garage of the home) and saw that you could do a guided home and studio tour or a combo home and studio + walking (the neighborhood to see other homes by Wright with guided audio) tour. And yippee, they do student discount pricing — bless you grad school! I’m not going to lie, it may have been the best $ 12 I have spent all summer!
The man was an artistic genius! His use of space, lines, angles, colors, and nature are unparalleled. The attention to the most minute details was mind blowing. The tour guide did an excellent job pointing out all of Wright’s intricacies and proclivities that are apparent in every nook and cranny of the home and studio. This is the first home Wright built for himself and he and his first wife raised their six children there. The children’s playroom will make you stand in awe of his genius.
You will be a captive audience as you stand in front of the house and the guide tells you to look around at the other houses’ use of front walkways — they all lead straight to the door. Wright put the entrance to his gated yard off to one side and created a walkway that led through the gardens and provided different vantage points of the house and roof angles providing guests with an experience and a way to combine nature and home. Fan-f***ing-tastic! It’s called the pathway of discovery! I’m in, show me more and don’t stop!
And the studio — suffice it to say, there is a lighting pulley system rigged in the octagonal drafting room that also acts as structural support — mind blowing!
