Oak Park’s oldest continuous business, HJ Mohr has been around since the 1890s. They’ve had some bad(and usually one-sided) press in the recent past because some neighbors moved in and were shocked, Shocked!, to discover that they lived across the street from a concrete company. Nonetheless, they seem to have gone out of their way to accommodate those neighbors and their often-puerile complaints. My dealings with them have been as a homeowner in the neighborhood in Oak Park. I’ve gotten sand and gravel, sometimes in bags and sometimes loose in the back of my pickup, for several garden projects, including for a patio, and that small round river or pea gravel for a garden path. I’ve also had them deliver a load of concrete for a building project. They’ve always been very helpful, making useful suggestions in advance, and patient, not making me feel silly when I didn’t know exactly what I needed. The only thing I can’t really discuss completely is price. They’re a lot cheaper than getting gravel or sand at a garden center, even in bags, but I can’t say how they compare on that or the concrete to companies similar to theirs. HOWEVER, the reason I can’t make that comparison is that their prices reasonable enough that it wasn’t really worthwhile checking. That’s especially true the the sand and gravel, as I’m carrying it home myself; they’re much closer for me than anyone else, and they’ve always loaded ‘just a little extra’ to make sure there’s enough.
