Where else can you buy something to hang a picture and buy some ammo? That’s right, True Value! I was going next door to grab something from the butcher and remembered I needed to hang a picture in my garage.(I know, who hangs pictures in their garage?) i found what I was looking for and standing in line at checkout I saw this countertop display of ammo. Not in gun store qty but most of your common stuff like 9 mm, 45, 22 and 38. A couple of boxes of each. Screen repair, paint, tools, hardware, plumbing, sprinkler, electrical… it’s all here. Not your big box retailer but good inventory, friendly people and close to home. Support your local True Value…

I just had the worse experience here and im left wondering if the staff is prejudiced. I came in in to ask for moving supplies and the attendant looked at me like i was something funny. He was in the store with a friend, playing video games. Then when we went to the section where my product might have been, he couldn’t stop laughing. I asked him what was up and he came up with some quip but never got serious. He kept looking out over me as apparently his friend was making quips. He kept laughing and making me feel very uncomfortable. I finally just gave up and left. Horrible service and treatment. And I’m left wondering if they were making fun of me being Hispanic? I’ll never come back here.

This is my go to hardware store when I’m in the middle of a project and need something to finish. The selection used to be much greater but they’ve recently scaled back the size of the store and removed a bunch from stock. I mainly go for screws, nuts, bolts, nails, drill bits and the like but they have your usual stuff like paint, light bulbs, small tool selection, tape, fertilizer, etc. They also have a screen department which I’ve not yet tried but am getting ready to repair a couple of torn ones. I do use them for ordering custom air filters for my home A/C return vent. Prices aren’t cheap but when you’re in a hurry sometimes you trade price for time, at least I do. The store could use some newer merchandise but it’s still okay for now.

This place is an asset to our neighborhood. They are the place to go when you are in the middle of something, covered in paint or glue or sawdust, and need a tiny bit of something you ran out of, or a screw you can’t find, or must answer a 1950’s ranch style home improvement question. They know a lot about the problems that houses have in South Florida and if they don’t have it they will tell you where to go to get it.(By that I mean other specialty plumbing, electrical, or irrigation stores in the area.) They are a great resource. They make keys, screens, and custom A/C filters in the size you need. They can often order it if they don’t have it in stock. Jim has been there for years, and I just love Bonita at the register. No, they are not as cheap as Lowes, but you’ll get more than what you pay for in service and answers to your questions. Not to mention saving gas on the drive to Lowes!

I love coming to this store. Every time I’m in, I get asked numerous time if they can help me. It is so nice to come to the neighborhood store and shop. I don’t have to jog to the next isle to get what I need. I’m in and out. They have everything I need every time. I just got them to come out and install plantation shutters at my house and they look amazing. This is my new must hardware store to shop at. I also love going to the meat market next door.

They are knowledgable, reasonable and have a good inventory. In the future, I plan to check them out first before heading off to the big home improvement stores. They replace window screens and will do other small jobs for a homeowner.

With the advent of Walmarts and Home Depots we can sometimes forget the coziness and ease of shopping in a good old fashioned down home hardware store. Collier True Value should take first place in central casting as fitting the bill. Nothing like a move to a new neighborhood and apartment to segway into a search among aisles of doo-dads in search of a new lightbulb, some edgy neon thumbtacks or maybe even that trusty bag of potting soil to bring your just moved and now dropping dead greens back to health. I’ve been here twice and have always been cordially greeted by the helpful staff and treated to a nice smile and salutation on my exit from the register. If only more stores today continued this tradition of those little human touches. It may not be the bargain as the aforementioned two international chains; but for my money I want to support trusted family owned ventures like this one; they’re true institutions of value indeed.

If you want questions answered and need someone’s advice on a project, these folks can’t be beat. Friendly help that the big box stores lost interest in a long time ago.

I have two favorite local hardware stores, Beachside and Collier, giving a slight preference to Beachside but maybe only because it’s closer to my nest. What they both offer is a staff is a knowledgeable, friendly helpful service. If you have a question, someone there probably has an answer and unlike Home Depot or Lowe’s it is more than likely a correct answer. Both are small, serious hardware stores without the added carpet, appliance or other such non traditional hardware items which for me has always added up to quicker, easier more convenient as well as successful hardware shopping.

Skip the Home Depot and Lowe’s, try supporting a local business. We popped into this True Value hardware store a block or two off of Federal Highway to pick up some household bits(probably made in China, but let’s not focus on that!). Very narrow aisles, but they are densely packed with all the tools, bits, bobs, paint, mailboxes, and other stuff you need for your home and your office and anything else where you might want to hit a hammer into a nail. The staff is friendly and very knowledgable. As I mentioned, it’s a small shop. Only 8000 square feet, which is dwarfed by the much larger and higher shelved) Home Depot that is usually around 100,000 square feet. But don’t let that put you off. These folks know their stuff!
