This is a great little coffee shop thats in a neighborhood with few options, friendly staff and relaxing music while you wait for a very delicious cup of coffee. Very nice breakfast sandwich and pastries also.

Best tamales ever! Great coffee too. Love this cozy, hidden little gem. I had a tamale and was so impressed got a bunch to go for my family. Now I’m back for lunch and got the special which included avacado, chips and a coffee. A little slice of heaven.

Every time I come here I find regulars chilling with a cup of coffee. Akat Café will never let you down! The menu is healthy and delicious, I find vegan tamales with nopales and delicious mushroom pozole. They carry exquisite Mexican coffee and make a bomb chai. Definitely a spot for tasty affordable vegan bites!

Best coffee in Oakland! I come here a few times a week since I live nearby. On top of great coffee, they have great breakfast sandwiches, tamales & lots of delicious snacks. The café itself is small but cozy & Jose, the owner, makes you feel at home. Check this place out!

Not even sure how the food is because I’ve been waiting 30 minutes for two breakfast sandwiches and have seen four people receive their items as I sit waiting.

You guys, I love this place! I was walking to the other side of the lake for the nearest Starbucks when I stumbled across Akat Café, a couple blocks away from my place. The staff there is so friendly and nice! Atmosphere is so intimate, with beautiful music always playing. There are about half a dozen seats inside, and then one or two tables and a bench outside. I’ve been twice now and had a regular soy latte and a Mexican latte. So good! Really happy I found this place in the neighborhood. To note: they only have one size drink for here(14oz) and one size for to go(12oz). I usually go with a 16oz at other places, but I just got lighter ice and it was completely fine. Love this place!

Not only do they have an interesting place with colorful art and wonderful food(sometimes they feature homemade Tamales de Rajas con queso, or shrimp other kinds plus other Mexican foods), you can often hear live Mexican Music here. Son Jarocho music from the state of Vera Cruz in southern Mexico used to be played here on Sundays(i think they cancelled it due to complaints from the neighbors:(:(:(Too bad.) But they recently had 3 year anniversary party, with Aztec Dancers, live music and dance(Son Jarocho) and an outdoor film about Ayotzinapa and the 43 disappeared students shown on the wall. Not just a café, this is a mini cultural center! Only with they had more space, and an events permit~

This is what a local café should be. So welcoming, down-to-earth, full of art. I’m not big on coffee but love a good cup of máte(hot or iced) or jamaica /hibiscus(always iced). Jose is wonderful. The whole family is beautiful and political and kind. I’ve had study groups here, first dates, and friendly meet-ups. Good for the heart. Wishing all success to this place!

So I am giving five stars today because they added a cool pop up food stand out front a couple days a week. They serve Thai coconut desserts. Very cool. Reminds we of when I lived in Asia.

Forget the Peets, or that other big corporate chain… Come get some delicious café oaxaqueño here! Locally homemade tamales, breakfast sammies, and other delicious bites here! Plus, you can get the coffee beans here to make your own café oaxaqueño at home if you wanted. Oh, and not to mention that there’s some really amazing art supporting the guerrilla and grassroots movements around the bay and in Mexico. This is definitely a spot to enjoy and support!

Dipped in while waiting for a table at Portal — and now I’m a fan! The coffee was terrific. I didn’t realize this was a Café Santana coffee location…(woot woot OSA family!) but now I am and will definitely be back. As I described my coffee need for 2 shots of espresso in a regular coffee, there was no blink of an eye — very helpful couple of young ladies behind the counter. And she asked if I wanted room for cream and then gave me a larger cup to accommodate that! Seems simple, right? It’s not — that was excellent service right there. The coffee was terrific, and they were setting up for some music on the outside seating area(just 2 or 3 tables and a bench or two). Love, love, love it here.

Cute little spot. Super super tiny. I had the chai latte. It didn’t have enough sweetness but the orange brandy bundt cake was sweet enough to offset the bitter aftertaste of chai. I took a star away bc there’s no music! What kind of coffeehouse has no music?! The décor is so cute and the vibe is there I just needed some music to get it to my ultimate«mid day chill mode» zone. Can we get at least music off of somebody’s phone? Would it be awkward for me to open my pandora calle 13 station?

I’ve tried visiting on several occasions, but only succeeded once. From the one time I visited, they had great coffee, but the store owner is highly inconsistent and does not adhere to operating hours as a business should. On my one visit, the store owner asked me where I was coming from, which felt like an odd question, and I told him I was walking from a nearby taco truck. He then solicited me to promote his business to the people at the taco truck. It was a little off-putting. I’d recommend holding normal business hours. If this place was open when it was listed, since it’s near me, I’d probably visit more often.

The coffee is great, the atmosphere is comfortable, the service is friendly, locally ownership and management is always a plus, you couldn’t ask for more from a coffee shop, but wait, there is more! Order a mini omelet, you won’t be sorry, spinach and mushroom available, I normally get both. Again, the coffee is great, and they sell whole bean coffee for those that normally make their own, it really is the place to go for coffee, either fresh for you or beans for you to make.

Strolled in on a rainy Sunday morning while waiting with a friend for a table at Portal restaurant. The café itself is relatively small, but that’s what made it so quaint and hipster. The owner Jose was really nice and my friend ordered the Agave latte. I love agave, so I was really excited to try it with the pies we got a couple doors down from PieTisserie. I’ve never had an agave latte, but I have had agave and it was a really great compliment to the coffee. I’m not much of a coffee connoisseur, but I am a connoisseur of all things yum. The sweet, honeyish after taste the agave leaves in the coffee is something I never had. Excited to see what else is good here! Til next time, LIVE.LAUGH.LOVE.EAT.REPEAT

Went here with a friend while we were waiting for our table at the neighboring Portal. I suspect they get a good deal of business this way because the hostess told us that people love visiting this shop while they’re waiting. When I pulled up the café on Unilocal(gotta get those check-in’s!) I was excited to visit this 4.5 star establishment.(Spoiler alert: it was Oakland in a glass and tasted delicious) When you walk in, you go through a sort of sensory overload. The café almost feels like you’re stepping into a home. People seem to all know each other and the walls are covered by art by local progressive artists, couldn’t ask for much more. The drinks: asked the owner, Jose, what he would recommend. Among the list of drinks he mentioned the one that stuck out most to me was the Agave Latte. I love agave and I love latte’s, sounds like a win-win. For 4.5 dollars I wasn’t disappointed by the flavors, it left a strong agave after taste that I really enjoyed and found quite appealing. My only complaint was that it was a little weak and watered down for my taste, which is strange because my fellow Unilocalers mention how strong the coffee is. Maybe I just got unlucky with my cup. Really happy with my experience at Akat, especially since before brunch we didn’t even have any plans to stop by. The next time I’m in the Lake Merritt area I’ll be sure to come by and sample Akat’s other unique offerings. Til next time, keep eating keep learning!

Love this spot. My friend and I went for a walk around the lake and she lives right near this place so we stopped in for chai latte’s and she got a bagel/cream cheese too. The owners are friendly and stoked to be in the area! Go support the local business and they sound like they will be hosting a lot of cultural events there too. I’ll def stop back when I am close to her place again.
