Food was ok but not spectacular. Guacamole was blah and watery and ridiculously small for the price. All the portions were small for price actually. To add insult to injury we found two mistakes on the bill. They didn’t ring up the guacamole which is 5.50 but instead doubled charged us for a more expensive item that we ordered one they charged for two instead. Then we asked for a pint of mole sauce to go and the waitress added it to the bill as the last item as misc @ $ 11 and then manually added it to the bill a second time. Didn’t catch the guacamole issue until after we left the restaurant and had to ask again for a refund. She was not apologetic the second time. Which leaves me with a bad taste.

Not impressed. High prices for small portions. Service wasn’t very good. I liked the michelada though

A week ago, we went here w two friends, one of whom is from Veracruz — in other words, totally different food than the DF,(or, as it is known by gringas like myself, Mexico City) but my friend, who cooks, thought the food was good. As did I — I had the huarache that is purple and the barbequed shrimp salad.(I was hungry.) Hand made tortillas. Really wonderful if kinda corny murals on the walls, re the Aztecs. This is NOT a hipster place, at all. So I love it.

I had originally bookmarked this restaurant because I wanted chicharron. They didn’t have it in the exact manner I wanted it, but I did get it on a huarache. Chicharron is basically soft pork rinds with some meat. It varies from location, but that’s the gist of it. Sangria: small glass of sangria, but I could taste the wine and the fruit was very well blended. I wanted more, but the pitcher was too big of a jump and I didn’t want to pay for another small drink. Chicharron Huarache: the huarache was made from purple corn and was loaded with lettuce, sour cream, fresh cheese. It was a decent size and a good mixture of flavors. Wish it had more meat. Chicken Mole Plate: Good sized portion with plenty of chicken, rice and beans. Also came with tortillas which is a plus. The mole was a little too sweet for my personal palette, but it was good. I like my mole more on the spicy side with less chocolate, but depending on where in Mexico it is made, it varies. I was aware it would probably be sweeter based on the color, so it’s my own doing. Still pretty good and hit the spot. Service: there were two girls attending us, both were very personable and helpful when trying to decide.

Bummed because this place has become a recent favorite but today had the worst service I have had at a restaurant in a very long time. Was seated by a bus boy? Waitresses ignored us. Was given chips 15 minutes later — no waitress, no water. Ordered finally and asked for water — mistakenly thought it would improve from there on but of course, it didn’t. No water refills ever(had to get up to ask twice) and wasn’t given the check. Had to get up and ask after sitting for maybe 20 minutes. As the waitress went to hand check over she seemed really dismayed by us but whatever, you’re not paying attention to your tables and that’s bad service. Also there was an INSANELY loud mariachi band that made babies cry and pleasurable conversations become yelling across the table. Like for real little kids were plugging their ears and people were leaving. Idk — no Bueno and thinking I’m gonna keep going to obelisco where they are consistent with their service and atmosphere. Sadly retiring this as a spot I bring folks to when I want to eat good Mexican food and returning to my standbys. Bye el huarache azteca.

El Huarache Azteca knows how to cook good food. I know this from a lot of visits over the eight years that I’ve lived in the neighborhood. I’m not a big Unilocaler, but I’ve recommended them to a lot of my friends. But today they installed sidewalk speakers and are blasting enormously overamplified music that dominates the whole block. I was miserable buying food across the street and down the block, and the cashier at International Market looked miserable, too. El Hurarache Azteca, you are a good restaurant, but you will lose me and other customers if you continue to blast-broadcast music onto International Avenue that makes it impossible to pay attention to anything else. Walk down International to your neighbors. Primo Express plays music all day and so does Mora’s Western Wear. They’re fine — they’re part of the culture of Fruitvale. But you are EIGHTTIMESLOUDER. This was a bad idea. You have to turn it down or stop. If you continue to try to wreck my eardrums, I will continue to try to turn my friends away from you to all the other great restaurants in Fruitvale. You were a good neighbor before. Become a good neighbour again. STOPBLASTINGYOURMUSIC!

On behalf of Xicana Moratorium Coalition we want to appreciate El Huarache Azteca for their donation to support the 36th Annual Xicana Moratorium Day, where we will be bringing attention to the Third World Liberation – One Land One People, taking place August 30th, 2015 from 12−5pm at San Antonio Park in Oakland. Their donation made possible this annual free event for people of color in the Bay Area.

Authentic, homey, cozy. I felt like I was really in DF. The wine isnt fab, but the aged pineapple is DELICIOUS like kombucha. And plus you should be drinking beer anyway, yeah? The Huaraches feel healthy. I felt good afterwards. Not in a burrito coma, or thanksgiving coma. Just satisfied and pleasant.

This style of Mexican food comes from Mexico City. The tortillas are homemade and soups are delicious. It seems the beef soup is popular. This restaurant takes pride in the mole. The mole is thick, rich and has a chocolate flavor. The chicken and mole dish was very good along with chicken enchiladas. I was not a fan of the huaraches however.

Mexican Food, with authentic Mexican flavors. Like enchiladas verdes, if you like lamb don’t miss the Mixiotes de borrego, Just like made in Mexico. With the agave peel covered. Huanzontles is the only place I saw it here, there are kind of flower wrapped on eggs . On a spiced soup one of my favorites.

The huarache was ok, nothing especial. The service was good. I’m giving it 2 star because for what I had, one huarache with two little pieces of meat and guacamole, I paid over $ 20.00! I feel like I was robbed, I won’t go back. Like I said, it wasn’t that good for the price I paid.

Great food, very very tasty and satisfying. The posole and menudo(served on Sundays) are quite remarkable and the asada taco is awesome as well. With all that great stuff, get the guava drink to wash it all down. Aside from the food, everything else from the ambiance, good service, fair prices, and the lively mariachi band on the weekends make for a fun dining experience.

Talk about eclectic and authentic Mexican food, you’ve got to try this restaurant when in Oakland. The service is excellent and centrally located on International St. Foods like chiles en nogada, huaraches and the famous corn fungus(huitlacochi) which is suggested to try.

I’ve been having their food since they started in their garage at their house. I was young and my parents used to take me to get their homade quesadillas and champurrado. Their pambazos are amazing, so are their Aguas frescas. You can’t go wrong with anything here.

Thanks to the suggestion from my top Unilocaler Jose O. I tried El Huarache Azteca and I loved it! Barbacoa 1lb of slow cooked goodness includes the following for garnishing your tacos: cilantro, onion, and lemon all served with handmade tortillas. The best and most known beneficial to cure any hangover was the«consume» broth from the barbacoa unfortunately I have not tried these theory yet; some scientific research is to be completed before I give you a go on that meanwhile enjoy it it’s quite delicious. Strawberry water is really good and refreshing. If you are leaning for an adult beverage they make a pretty good size michelada.

Mexican street food has its place, but give me an authentic sit down restaurant with plates of mole and chiles en nogada and I’ll love you forever. A friend from south of the border tipped me off to try El Huarache Azteca. I tried it twice for good measure, with one trip more successful than the other. On my first trip I tried the alambres, a difficult to find concoction featuring multiple meats, onions, bell peppers with cheese layered on top, served with tortillas. Done right it’s special and unique, and done wrong it’s just another plate of fajitas. El Huarache’s alambres fall somewhere in between, a good breakfast option after a late night if you’re looking for a greasy boost to your morning. But despite its prominence on the menu and in other people’s reviews, I probably wouldn’t recommend them unless you haven’t had them before. The huaraches, however, are where the action is. Just strap yourself in and order the huarache with mole and chicken. Mine was densely rich, chocolatey, and delicious. Frankly, you should just order the mole in whatever format you feel like eating it: enchiladas, huaraches, plato fuerte… doesn’t matter. Just enjoy it. El Huarache also has fresh squeezed juices, like the Vampiro, with beets, carrots, and other healthy tidbits. You won’t be paying International Blvd prices, though: a large juice will cost you a Marina-sized budget. In fact, a lot of the dishes here run pretty high, though the alambres at least will feed a small army. In other news, the chips and salsa are sadly forgettable… Go get your Mexican on, and watch some futbol while digging into a plate of mole at El Huarache Azteca.
