Evergreen is the first Chinese long-term eldercare facility in the US(don’t know if there are others) and I think it meets a very real need. My grandmother, who spent some time here, didn’t speak English(and I can’t speak Chinese). Imagine how lonely and frustrating it would be to be in a facility where you couldn’t communicate with others. Now think of being surrounded by the culture, food and language you’re familiar with. They show Chinese movies, serve up Chinese food, and offer Chinese exercise routines too. The staff is all Chinese and they speak Mandarin and Cantonese. They’ve been around since 1975. The facility isn’t in the nicest neighborhood but there’s a security gate and the residents can’t leave the facility without permission. It’s on a hill, so it has a nice view. Residents can get some fresh air and wander the grounds, but still remain safe.
