Fruit carts on International Blvd

Okay so I haven’t had elote in a long awhile, and I have seriously been craving that stuff like no other. I was so happy to find a cart that sold them when I came to Oakland this past Sunday. I felt like a little kid eating an ice cream lollipop on a hot day, only it was fatty corn on a stick. I probably should have asked for less chili powder, but it was still good anyway. Oh and tell me why when me and my friend were just sitting eating our corn, some crazy lady tells my friend to quit disrespecting her, when we were just minding our own business — our corns on the cob. And some other strangle people kept hassling us on International. I feel like elote just draws so much attention, but it could also be that us two Asian girls just stick out like sore thumbs. But I’m gonna blame the corn. That crazy good corn.

Damnnnn. I’m craving for one right now. DO yourself a favor and get a bag of mangoes, hook that baby up with some lime, salt and chili powder and you won’t regret it.

when you’re walking down international, and you’re not feeling the mexican/​central american/​puerto rican/​etc., get one of these ziplocs o’ goodness. as other Unilocalers have mentioned, it tastes especially good with a little lime juice/​chili powder!

These are the best, especially on a hot-​a** day. For like, I think, $ 2-​$ 3 you get a (mixed) bag full of fruit and some veggies (cucumber usually). You can either have it plain or you can have it the way I prefer with chilli powder and lemon/​lime squeezed in the bag for that great contrast of spicy/​hot and sweet/​tangy.

On any day, you’ll see a fleet of fruit carts being pushed around on this boulevard. If you want a cool and refreshing snack, slam on your breaks, pull over yonder, and order a bag. Select from fresh cut-​up watermelon, mangos, strawberries, cantalope, jicama, cucumbers, pineapple, papaya, cactus fruit, coconut, or a mixed bag. They’ll squeeze fresh limes on it, sprinkle salt, and as much chili powder as you want. They’ll give you a squewer so you can poke the pieces out of the ziplock bag. Some carts offer steamed corn on a stick, although I’m not used to the way they prepare it. They roll the corn in mayo and sprinkle it with chili powder and something kinda like parmesean cheese. It’s OK but I usually stick with the fruits. Or get a bag of homemade extra crunchy potato chips. Those are excellent too.
