Gin Rummage Thrift is operated by Allen Lee, of the former :“Hong Kee Market” on eigtht street. small space. mostly clothes are in da house. saw some cameras on a lower shelf behind some glass at the cashier’s desk. didn’t buy anything, books, dvd;s in short supply. confirmed they are willing to take donations. cool to know since i can donate my books here rather seeing them dumped in the trash by my SO. 3.5 stars for something different in chinatown.

About a little over a month ago on Chinese New Year while walking through Oakland Chinatown, I saw this thrift shop’s sign, opening soon, on its window. The other day I noticed the grand opening sign, but did not have a chance to stop in to browse. Time: 2:50PM. 70° F. Sunny & clear Gin Rummage Thrift Shop is owned by Mr. Allen Lee, a friendly gentleman in his late 40’s/early 50’s, who grew up in Oakland Chinatown. I have never met him, but he and I certainly shared plenty of memories of the neighborhood. It’s a small world, as we knew some of the same people. He and I even attended the same elementary school, Lincoln. Ambiance: small storefront packed with men, women and children clothes — either on hangers on the racks or neatly folded on the shelves. It also carries toys, books, houseware and dinnerware items, cameras, Chinese framed wall hangings, etc. Front counter(all glass display case has miscellaneous trinkets, knick knacks, etc.), bead necklaces in a basket and cash register to the left of entrance. Purpose for my visit: To find out if he accepts donated books, toys, crystal glassware for sale. It’s the season to do some spring cleaning; yes, he does accept donated merchandise. Laugh for the day: On hangers, a California lottery tee shirt(size large) for $ 3.00 and a Define Naughty tee shirt(did not check out the price). Bargain buy: a pair of Levi’s cargo shorts(beige), size 32 waist, for $ 2.00, excluding tax. Drawback: Street parking is terrible in the ‘hood. Public transportation — AC bus stop is on the corner of 7th& Franklin Street — about ½ block away, due west. Return trips: Yes, mainly to donate items such as books, toys and some DVD’s. Tip: not open on Sundays.
