I’ve been going to greg for about 4 years. ilove his service! he takes his time and always asks for your input.

The best! A nice guy, a local institution going on 50 years, and always a good haircut.

Greg is the real deal! He’s been cutting hair since World War I or something and still does a stellar job! Though you need to shout into his 85 year-​old ears to get what you want, he offers Chinatown prices and a cut superior to the salon I used to frequent for $ 35 plus.
He’s super patient, super careful, and will cut for an hour if that’s what it takes to get it right. He also always offers to retouch it for free for up to a week!
Hands down, best haircut in Oakland!

If the 4 stars from the other reviews are for wait time then I can understand. I haven’t had more than a 15 minute wait time.
I’ve come here twice. Fades are NOT his specialty.
He’s the only barber I got to that sits down while cutting hair… not sure if it’s a medical reason but I won’t be back to find out.

Worst haircut I’ve ever received. Greg was more concerned about leaving early than cutting my hair. He said himself he wasn’t happy w the job he did and told me he didn’t know what to do about it. I kindly asked him to even out the spotty job and he continually got more and more angry at me because he couldn’t fix the problem. He eventually kicked me out of the chair w out charging because he wanted to go home.
Do not go to this barber shop! You’ll be doing yourself a favor by avoiding it.

So I needed a hair cut and i was in my old neighborhood (downtown Oakland) Greg’s had been recommended to me by my girlfriend based I think on reading the Unilocal reviews and the fact he had back issue’s of playboy to err. read.
So if you want old-​skool Greg is your man, I think he told me he was 85 years old but with his jet black dyed hair and goatee id say he looked at least a decade younger.
He did indeed offer me reading matter and yes that was back issues of playboy, he also asked if i wanted music on. I think he was excited as he told me he was going ballroom dancing that evening.
After asking what I wanted he used a hairdryer to blow off previous clients hair (or was it dust ?) off the various trimmers he had. so to the hair cut, well it was cheap and he was cheerful but it was not really what i asked for, he charged me less than the normal cut price of $ 16, but I gave him 20 bucks and told him to keep the change. Not sure if I would go back but he gives an A-​ok hair cut for cheap !

This is the first barbershop I went to when I moved to Oakland two years ago. $ 14 for a good, simple men’s hair cut. (Now it went up to $ 16, but no complaints from me). Nothin’ fancy. I told Greg what I wanted and he knew. He’s obviously been in the business for a long time. He’s a bit hard of hearing, but makes up for it with great intuition and really wants to give a quality hair cut. He always offers for me to come back in if I want anything changed, but I never need to. It’s great to have a local barber I can trust. If I ever move out of downtown I’ll come back for Greg’s hair cuts.

Initially there was a bit of confusion when I walked in…
I am a boi-​ish butch type and have been on an on going journey to find a hair cut that captures masculine simplicity. I have gone to high end salons and sat in chairs for hours, hoping that it would pay off, but I am always somewhat disappointed.
Greg told me he didn’t do too many lady’s hair cuts but I let him know I was there for a men’s cut. It was quick, simple and cheap and most of all I loved it. He let me know that if I thought it wasn’t short enough, I could come back later. He also gets bonus points for the skin mags laying around.
If you are looking for a simple, quick, no frills, a little dingy, cheap barber shop for a good olé fashioned men’s cut, Greg’s is it.

This is my first ever Unilocal review, and I’m reviewing only because Greg is the best barber I’ve had in a long time… it’s like traveling back to the good old days before the mass chains and impersonal service and relationship… I dunno if it’s possible, but he brings dignity and old-​school charm back whenever I get a haircut from him. The only place I will get a haircut now in the Bay…

Top notch, reasonably priced. Really nice guy, been around forever. I tend to keep my hair a little longer, and he always does it right.

My grandparents were barbers and they cut my hair as a kid. Greg has the same old fashioned service and can cut hair in any style. He cuts my hair better than any fancy salon has ever done.
Go see Greg you will be happy!!!

I’ve been going to Greg for haircuts for years and happened to see his establishment on Unilocal so I decided to ad a review.
This is your basic «old school» barber shop with the barber pole and he obligatory Playboy magazines on the coffee table. Greg is friendly not only with all his patrons but with everybody in the neighborhood as well. I always want it a little longer or a little shorter depending on the weather. He always does it exactly the way I want. There are always people dropping in to say Hi to Greg while he’s cutting my hair but he always gets me in n’ out quick. He takes appointments on the phone if you want, but there is usually never a wait of more than a couple of minutes if I decide to just drop in. Parking is easy, although his side of the street is limited to a ½ hour I’ve never had a problem with getting back to my car on time. If you want a great haircut at the most reasonable price in Oakland… see Greg!

Greg’s is fantastic. Cheap, easy, very friendly, very nice, and Greg is a barber who knows how to cuts a man’s hair.
Great reading material (for the articles of course), and easy street parking.
I will return.

Great old fashioned barber shop with a very hip owner. Greg is an old school barber with a modern twist, just ask him about the latest salsa club, or the best dance instructors. His skill is top notch and steady with the scissors, «gentlemen’s» magazines available for your perusal and a genuine concern about you.

Greg is a wonderful barber! Not only does he do a great job with hair of all types, but he’s always ready to chat about neighborhood activities and events — especially dancing clubs and restaurants! He seems to know EVERYONE in Oakland! So many people walking by wave and open the door just to say HI and chat. He’s a great barber, with a wonderful friendly personality!
