I must interject — Easy people… this place has awesome ice cream. Umpqua is fantastic(and no, not everyone has it at home.) You don’t go there for the food, duh. I grew up in Medford and, as someone mentioned, it’s «that ice cream place in Rice Hill…» You can hold out til Cottage Grove or Springfield to get something to eat. This is ice cream. All of flavors are there, and they have the Pigout — 15 scoops in a dish. The one drawback are no bathrooms — but that’s what makes it quaint!

You’d be initially surprised with how high the prices are when you pull up. I paid $ 20 for a bacon cheeseburger, a hamburger, and onion rings and fries. The food is decent enough not to be upset or let down — especially if you’re coming off the freeway looking to fill up, but not mind blowing enough to say to yourself, «great choice, mate!» BUT, their ice cream saves the day. They serve Umpqua ice cream and had some tasty flavors. $ 4.50 for two scoops in a cake cone. A little pricey but for sure better than any of the stuff you’ll find at the gas stations. I had the cookie dough and pistachio almond. It was awesome.

Their big thing is ice cream and shakes. The shake was not good. I got the most popular flavor chocolate peanut butter and the flavor was ok but it was absolutely filled with chunks of ice crystals. The place is a pile of mobiles attached together and is pretty large but doesn’t have a bathroom at all. We were told to go to the Pilot on the other side of the freeway to use the bathroom. Won’t be going back.

We were so excited to stop here and eat thinking this was going to be a diner, drive in, and dive gem. Food is ok. You can tell everything is originally frozen and either fried or grilled. We were shocked at how pricey it was also. Its a good place to go to if your hungover or are in a hurry. I’d go back for a scoop of ice cream.

Awful, overpriced food. Large plain tater tots were 6.75. I’m sure they were low budget frozen bulk ones too. Chili was flavorless and pulled pork sandwich was only okay. Worst part is that it took em 15 minutes to get this small order. I love old places like this, it looked right up my alley, but for my money and time, I’ll from now on, always head over the the ranch restraunt lounge down the street. If ice cream is what your looking for, head into Yoncalla and grad some from the little shop there.

It’s conveniently located right off the freeway. And there is an ARCO has station at this exit. No restrooms. Clerks were nice. Food was good. Would have given them 4 stars if they had a restroom.

I was turned onto K-R 3 years ago on my return from Portland to The Bay. Every time I drop by, I always joke with fellow travelers that this is not a destination for good customer service. I’ve been in the serving industry and customer service for almost 15 years, so I’m very lenient and patient when it comes to subpar customer treatment. In the years past, I’m able to look beyond the«this-is-my-summer-job, so-I-could-care-less» attitude and kill the kids with kindness and even wrap up with a tip. I’ve always hated that the burgers are sinfully delicious, because I probably wouldn’t return to this little gem after this last visit. Long story short, a customer asked to get another batch of onion rings because hers had gone cold and soggy. From my perspective, the complaint was valid and the customer was not being out of line, by any means. The girl working the register did the right thing(or so you would think) and got the manager involved. The manager instantly created a hostile transaction, which prompted the customer’s father to approach the window. The gentleman clearly had difficulty walking(hence his placard) and was a war vet. The situation concluded with a fresh batch of onion rings — BUT — the manager chose to let her emotions further drive down the lack of customer experience. She screamed at the top of her lungs, «SIR! SIR!!! YOURONIONRINGSAREREADYYYY!!! SIRRRRR!!! YOUBETTERHURRY!!! THEY’REGETTINGCOLD!!! SIR!!! YOURONIONRINGS!!! …» I really wanted to interject, but I cowardly admit that my food hadn’t been made yet and I didn’t want to deal with the threat of molested food. Instead, I vow to never return to K-R and take my business a few miles south. The root cause of the poor service can be found in the awful leadership, not so much summer job angst. I can handle lousy service if the payoff is worth it, but I WILLNOTTOLERATETHEMISTREATMENTOFTHOSETHATHAVESERVEDOURCOUNTRY.

Love this little spot on the side of the freeway! They have 40 delicious favors of Umpqua ice cream to choose from and they do not disappoint at all! You can order up to 15 scoops in one bowl! I decided to go with one scoop of carmel cone in a waffle cone and my bf ordered rocky Road and strawberry cheesecake in a bowl with a waffle cone on top. The ice cream scoops were generous! so im glad I only ordered one scoop. We also ordered a grilled cheese which came with pickles. I thought the pickles were a little stange to come with a grilled cheese but I ate them seperate anyways so guess I cant complain lol The grilled cheese was really good and bread was prefectly grilled. I was super happy about it. We ate our food at the tables they have provided next to the food place outside. They do not have a public restroom so don’t expect to be able to go anywhere. Over all, love this little place. Can’t wait to go back up to Oregon so I can get ice cream here again!

Bummer. I’ve been going here for 30+ years… huge cones of Umpqua ice cream at a great price. It was the place to go when you were road tripping along i5. Always packed with happy people who knew about«that ice cream place at Rice Hill». Stopped here yesterday. .hardly anyone there on a hot afternoon. Then i found out why. Got a tiny one-scoop cone and they charged me $ 3.50. Whaaaaa? Very sad. I won’t stop again.

Have to agree with Erin it seems unthinkable to have to leave to go to the bathroom. But there it is. We enjoyed our food and the Ice Cream is excellent. But to have to leave to use a bathroom is in fact what happens. Under the Fwy is a gas station and an adult movie store(??) with a sign so big you could watch a movie on the sign. its a strange combo.

I’d give them 10 stars for the historical significance of surviving in our current«fast food nation». For the quality of their ice cream offerings, I’d give 5 stars. Their prices, though… wow. Felt they were pretty high for a location that seems to lack much overhead. With that said, I still can’t really complain. The milkshake we received was thick and rich. Umpqua ice cream is pretty delicious! And, the waffle cone with two scoops was more than generous in size. They also have a large selection of sundaes, malts, burgers, sandwiches and sides to fill you up. The nostalgic drive-in style building makes you wish for simpler days, and after the madness of a long road trip, this is a welcome stop to get a sugar rush and a break from the windshield.

Stopped by on the way home from our road trip and loved it! The food was good, drive in cheese burgers and Umpqua ice cream :). Fast and friendly service and a short line this time!

Go for the ice cream… skip the food After passing this drive in for several years, we decided to give it a try. My first impression that this is a nostalgic drive in of better days gone by so it must be good. Well, just a bit disappointed. Although the staff had smiles on their faces and were very polite, the service was quite slow. Stood outside the window for 5 minutes before they took our order. That was o.k. I asked if the prices for a cheeseburger included fries. «No.» Wow. $ 7 for a single cheeseburger?! So, two cheeseburgers, a small tray of tatter tots and a small tray of O rings. $ 17.50. Average food. Nothing spacial. Did not have the ice cream but the folks who were looked pleased with the large scoops. The final analysis… 3 stars just because they smiled, but we don’t plan a return stop soon.

Wow. Ice cream is amazing. Well worth the stop. Only minus is no bathroom but hey it’s a «drive in». Food is okay. I had the chocolate trax. Kids loved their cookie dough cones. Oh and it’s pet friendly.

Yumm Yumm Yumm! Thick shakes made with Umqua ice cream. Friends have recommended stopping here for years. I tried the Tin Roof sundae malt shake. The sundaes looked fantastic. The wait staff was friendly and fast. They are right next to I-5 in Rice Hill opposite side of the freeway from the motels, etc. And, they have an outside area with picnic tables in a covered area. In the menu they had burgers and garden burgers. It’s nice to know that they have an option for vegetarians. Next time, I plan on trying their sundaes.

Fun old-fashioned drive-in. Burgers underwhelming; not as good as In-n-Out, which isn’t an incredibly high benchmark. However, it is in the middle of nowhere so it’s hard to be too picky. I also had a butterscotch malt milkshake, which was pretty good, though almost too sweet. Fine for what it is, but don’t go out of your way to come here.

We stopped here on our way back from San Diego this past summer and I was just reminiscing about it, so I thought I’d add a review. We only ordered ice cream, no food. The line was long, but moved quickly. It gave us time to look over the vast assortment of flavors. The ladies working inside were quick and efficient. We each got the $ 5 bowl with 2 flavors. Sure, we could just buy Umpqua at the store, but it was nice to have a sample of a couple of flavors before committing to buying a whole container. After a day and a half on the road, it was the perfect treat.

Tourist trap alert! It’s a roadside food stand that brings on all sorts of feelings of nostalgia. But it’s not good – sorry. Burgers are preformed, frozen discs with zero flavor. So thin that they cannot be served warm, for once they touch the cold lettuce or pickles they instantly seize up and die. Frozen potato and onion products – served under cooked. Yum! K and R’s real claim to fame is their ice cream and the«crazy» number of scoops you can get. Problem is, it’s just Umpqua brand ice cream. Any store worth its salt carries Umpqua. Pushing Umpqua ice cream as amazing is the same as any restaurant pushing Tillamook cheddar. We’re Oregonians and most, if not all, of us have Tillamook cheese and Umpqua ice cream at home right now! K and R is popular for travelers on I-5 because really, what else are you going to eat on that desolate stretch of freeway? Across the highway the choices are even worse, so K and R might be the«best», but I would still recommend waiting until civilization is reached before eating. The very best reason to NOT stop here is the lack of bathroom. Usually, after hours of driving, people like stop to eat AND use the bathroom, preferably at one establishment. Not here. After consuming your pathetic food you’ll have to hop back in the car, drive under the freeway, and go into the Pilot to use the facilities. I bet Pilot loves that so many non-customers are frequenting their joint.

I’m obsessed. It was so good. M has noticed this place and has always wanted to stop, so we did. I got a cheeseburger with all the fixings and extra cheese, he got a double bacon cheeseburger. We shared a small fry and chocolate malt. My burger was so amazing, the perfect size, the patty was 3 or 4 ounces and fit on a big bun. I can’t stand those awful one pound patty steak burgers. They have lots of ice cream flavors. The fries were not too exciting, the malt was good. My only gripe? They need a bathroom, even a honey bucket would do.

4.75 for the worst burger! Cold and dry Wow paid 6.75 for a cold patty that was too small for the bun and over salted fries and no drink. If you took the time to make me fresh fries, why couldn’t Ya fry up a fresh beef patty??? We’ve driven past this place so many times and dropped. By today. Wish we hadn’t. Disappointment. Good for locals because of slim Pickens in the area, but still. Totally gross to bite into a hamburger as cold as the pickles. I’ll be pissed of I get sick. And what’s up with sending ppl to the pilot to pee or wash hands? where do you pee or dare I ask wash your hands? Look I’m just pissed that the burger is making my stomach feel like crap. The meat was /is that pre patty crap from Costco. THEBURGERWASSOCOLDANDOLD. It should have been wasted out instead of served to people. Either bad standards, managers, owners, employees, but be careful of this place, where if you get sick it will not surprise me. To the people who are saying place is an institution? Did you guys escape one? Crazy. Because I dont like the mcDs, bk, jack Places like you some of you. This place would make a. gas station burger taste good in comparison.
