This used to be one of my favorite little local treasures, but recently the long-time owner and his wife(the excellent cook) retired, and turned the entire operation over to their niece and nephew. While I cannot begrudge them their retirement, it is clear that the food has really deteriorated, along with the rest of the experience. Although the restaurant was full, it is very small(8 tables), yet it took a half hour to have our order taken and another half hour to get the soup we ordered. Then two other dishes were hurriedly shoved onto the table at the same time. My favorite dish, coconut prawn crêpe, was unrecognizable, and mediocre. The other dish, eggplant and basil, was astonishingly flavorless. Perhaps in time the inexperienced staff will pull it together, but it is probable that this dinner will not return. Alas.

This place gets 2 stars for the funky and unique atmosphere. Other than that, I can’t figure out why people rave about old weang ping. It’s pretty close to our house so I was so excited to find a local Thai place. We ordered a curry and a Pad Thai and it was horrible. The Pad Thai was completely inedible. Sadly we won’t be back.

This place is terrible since changing ownership. I wouldn’t have written an updated review, except that I heard the new owner telling a customer tonight that«we’ve been here 33 years»… which is really an insult to the old ownership; I don’t know if they’re relatives or not but the prices went up, the recipes all changed and its just really mediocre to bad now. The retired owners made such astoundingly better food than what’s now available here. I mean head and shoulders better than what they serve now. I’ve been here three times since it changed hands and I’ve been increasingly disappointed each time. I won’t be back.

Wonderful atmosphere very cozy this is the type of place that you would want to take your girlfriend to. The food is of the highest quality. If you are looking for speed you should go to the race track or to a hamburger joint. This restaurant is of the highest quality. This is the best place to relax and enjoy a superb meal at an affordable price. The outside of this wonderful place looks nice but the surprise is inside. Atmosphere –Fantastic, Food –To die for, waitress — absolutely the very best. There is no way to go wrong if you are lucky enough to pick this place to enjoy a meal. To say that I like this place is an understatement. This is Thai food at it’s very best. It’s soooo goooood.

Very, very, very delicious Thai food. On the menu we had… 1)Spicy Thai Chicken wings 2) Yellow New Zealand Lamb in Curry 3) Coconut Prawns Crêpe 4) Spicy Pork eggplant 5)Tilapia in Chile Sauce 6) Sweet Sticky Rice in banana leaves. My taste buds can’t explain the exotic taste to this food but Wow!!!

I absolutely love spontaneously finding quaint treasures like these; those where you feel like you’re being taken away from the familiarities of the town you reside in. My Thai palette approves. I had a veggie dish which had basil, pumpkins, tofu, green beans, with white rice on the side. Straight-forward Thai dinner for one, and I was satisfied. I love their Thai iced-tea service in a goblet rather than water. Milk and sugar free, this Thai iced tea is easy to drink even without those additions. Perfectly brewed and one of the best simple iced teas I’ve had. I’m looking forward to a lunch visit here soon, and feel the place with some daylight.

Fantastic food and unique atmosphere. It’s definitely worth the trek out towards the Eastmont Center. My daughter and her friends find this place enchanting with its Thai country kitchen vibe complete with a kitschy lush tropical garden full of fake plants. The service is friendly but sometimes a little slow due to the minimal staff composed of 2 people. I love the complimentary iced unsweetened Thai tea. They also have great seafood specials. One of tonight’s specials was a whole fried trout with green bean prik king. So good! This goes for everything else I’ve eaten there. You must try the Roti covered with curried vegetables and shrimp. Corn cake fritters, papaya salad, pad siew noodles, sticky rice, etc. This place is really down home. It almost feels like eating in someone’s living room. I always see people with their kids in here. It’s definitely worth giving The Old Weang Ping a try.

It seems the original owners retired again. The menu has a lot of the same things on it but you can tell that they’re different. We ordered 3 things that we normally get and they tasted good but didnt have that same flair theat they did before. The curry crêpe was our favorite. the pot stickers and the pad prik king were staple dishes and they were just ok under the new management The food is not terrible. And good if you cant find anything else

1400th Review! How does one describe the décor inside Old Weang Ping? Unintentional Eclectic, perhaps? It’s basically Christmas lights meets rainforest with a shrine and a deer head or two thrown in.(If deer heads bother you, they’re hard to spot and I didn’t even notice them until my fourth visit.) How does one describe the décor outside Old Weang Ping? Well, it’s a little hood-y. Which is to say the first time we visited and parked around the corner, three of the four yards of said corner contained pit bulls behind their chain link fences. Trying to describe the vibe of this place is difficult since it’s what makes this place so unique. This is the kind of place where one of the owners is your server and the other is the chef and you get the feeling they just hang out there all day until a customer stops by.(Once when we arrived at 5:30 on a Saturday we were the only customers our entire visit save for one to-go order.) The sign on the exit door asks that the last customer locks the door when they leave. The bathroom is decorated with the(unintentionally) kitchiest of garage sale paintings. But don’t listen to me. NPR writes best about this kooky little oasis.: Everyone gets complimentary iced tea(too sweet for me). The prices are way too reasonable — $ 7.99 for an entrée. $ 3 for a big cup of soup. The chicken satay was one of the best renditions I’ve had. The meat was super flavorful. We’ve had the barbarian soup every visit. My husband loves it. I like but not love it, but it IS very interesting. It’s quite spicy(which isn’t noted on the menu and was spicier than the dish we had that was noted as spicy). The aromatic broth includes chicken and lots of random veggies, and is unlike any soup I’ve ever encountered in a Thai restaurant. The coconut prawn curry on crepes(listed on the specials board) is our favorite entrée. It’s basically prawns and green beans in a sauce on top of a thick slab of roti. It’s a little weird and doesn’t completely work, plus it’s a little tricky to eat and really needs to be served with a knife, but it grows on you. It’s also heavy on the green beans which isn’t a bad thing. The only miss has been the chicken and prawns in yellow bean sauce with mushroom(another special). I didn’t love the sauce. For the most part the dishes have been quite good across the board, but at the same time nothing made me say«wow.» My review is 4 ½ stars but I’ll bump it up because of the crazy ambiance and the super cheap prices.

Slow barely there service. Average prices. Eh food. Not worth the wait for the time it takes between ordering and getting your average food on the table.

Understaffed, Long Wait, and not at all«amazing» Thai Food. It’s a Friday night, 8:30PM and my boyfriend and I finished eating at 10:30PM… 2 hours later.(Mind you, we are fast eaters, so even at restaurants we can chow down in 30 minutes tops) Came with high hopes for this place. Saw all the good reviews so we decided since typically Thai places are fast, to eat there(Also, I landed late at OAK airport and this was the closest Thai Restaurant). Little did we know it would become a restaurant nightmare. It took 50MINUTES to get our APPETIZER. Our 1DISHAPPETIZER. The first 30 minutes I was patient… really patient. Since we came in 30 minutes before closing and maybe because there was a family of 10 they had to serve. I don’t know, but in the end it does NOT take 50 minutes to get our appetizer. After our appetizer we waited another 10−15mins for our main dishes. By this time it’s already 9:30pm and me and my boyfriend just want to get home. We weren’t even in the mood to eat anymore. Our main dishes came out and my Pad Thai that I had ordered with beef was Pad See Ew… WHAT.THE.F***. I was clear when I said pad thai to the waitir, even my BF remembered. The lady told me I ordered Pad See Ew… At this point I was already tired and traumatized from the long wait, I didn’t even bother arguing. The Pad See Ew was so damn plain and small in portion. I was disappointed. The broccoli and carrots were still undercooked and stale. The Pumpkin curry was ok. The 50min corn fritter appetizers weren’t even worth the wait. Pretty much the worst Thai experience I have ever been too. Will not be coming back.

Overrated. Ordered the stuffed chicken appetizer. Took about 30 minutes to come out. The inside stuffing was still cold. The chicken was crispy but not hot, possibly had been sitting out for awhile. Took another 20 minutes after finishing the appetizer for our first of two entrees to come out. Pumpkin curry was okay. Basil eggplant tasted boiled/overcooked. Only came with about 4 small pieces of eggplant with a medley of mixed veggies. Meh. Pretty disappointed overall. Really slow service. Cold food. One star.

Went here for our 20th anniversary. Not that we aren’t big spenders but we both prefer good food in a homey atmosphere. And we got that. We had the exotic herb salad — wonderful and would get this again in a moment. My wife had the coconut prawns and she reported that they were great. She also had a cup of what they called gumbo. It was on the spicy side for her but she liked the flavor. I had the pad thai — vegetarian and it was a bit lacking in flavor. I also had the musaman curry with eggplant, kabocha and other vegetables — it was good but I’m trying the red or green in the future. They could stand to get some more comfortable chairs. As large folks there were really only a couple of chairs that worked for us. Luckily it was not crowded and those were available.

What a delightful place, full of quirks and kitsch! You open the door to this little cottage restaurant and are immediately transported to the rainforests of Thailand, with leafy décor dotted with bird statuettes, and bamboo ceilings. Oh yes, the food — lots to accommodate this vegetarian palate — you simply say what vegetables and sauces you want them to stir fry together. Corn cakes and tiny vegetable dumplings were also a hit, and the gentleman serving us was friendly and warm. So glad that my friend Sue introduced me to this great little place! Hope to bring you here too sometime, ML

Amazing, amazing, AMAZING and authentic Thai food. I loved what I had! Their yellow curry was to die for and went amazingly with the rice they provided. Their pad thai was also on point! Portions are more than decent for the price you pay. I came here with Boyfriend and his sister — we ordered 3 dishes and still had enough leftovers to take home for another meal! They are a tiny, tiny place, so make sure you come here early(or at an off time) in order to guarantee quick seating — though they do take reservations, so maybe that’s the way to go when coming(book ahead)! The area might not seem like the greatest either, so try not to park too far away! Such a quirky, fun place. I loved the décor inside, but I honestly think that the dark dining room that leads to the bathrooms are haunted(as is the women’s room). It was so freaky looking, but yet didn’t detract from the overall atmosphere of the place — mysterious, dark, and yet enticingly inviting. I loved it. Now that I also know that I have friends who live nearby… maybe I can convince them that a regular dinner date here is in order! ;D
