World of Braids

Nay Nay was friendly, and made 5 hours seem like a breeze while braiding my hair. I got singles, they are all neat, the same size and length. It’s been one-​day and I have received many compliments thus far. NAY NAY is definitely my go to braider here. I use to come here years ago when they were across the street, so definitely appreciate the bigger space, with familiar faces. Very affordable and great work.

Incredibly inconsistent. Last time I went, I was in and out no questions asked. This time the girl who took my braids out left my scalp raw, she tugged and pulled. The only thing worse than the take down was the woman who did my hair. I constantly protested as that she was braiding too tight but she said no, it was my scalp. Three weeks later my braids still hurt and I’m praying I don’t lose all of my hair when I take it out. Beware and choose carefully.

My Braids fell out after 1 week. Too expensive for the quality of Braids. Never have evening appointments available. Unorganized.

This is a long overdue post. The first time I visited this place they saw me on short notice which was nice of them. Marian did my braids which looked amazing!!!

So I thought to give them a second chance!
Much to my surprise Mariam was not available so I went against my gut and another lady did my twist, she showed up late. Which was a bummer. And she also brought her twin boys who were running around spilling things over the floor. She stopped numerous amount of times to take her boys to the bathroom to feed them and HERSELF! I have a lot of hair so I am not tinder headed and I made sure my hair wash wash combed and blow dryers before my appointment. But this lady was so rough and the process was very painful! Needless to say the very next morning TWO of my twist have come undone. So I called the shop and they made arrangements for me to come back in the following day which I did! However after the second visit my hair is still unraveling! It hasn’t even
been a full week and my twist are out for the count! NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I EXPERIENCED SUCH UNPROFESSIONALISM! It’s amazing they are still open for business!
PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON A RUN DOWN SCAMMING SHOP! NOT WORTH IT!

4 stars for my braider…1 star for the atmosphere.
My braider Miriam did a very good job with my braids. She did medium sized singles that were almost waist length. I had to ask for the good Expressions hair; otherwise she was gonna try to put that cheap braid hair in. No thank you! The braids were a tad bit tight, however none came out yet, and I’ve received so many compliments. I don’t wear braids too often, but I know now that Miriam is my go to braider.
As for the atmosphere. sigh, where do I start? As other mentioned, they will talk another language and they do talk loudly, so forget about trying to hear the tv. I couldn’t get a wi fi connection. There were numerous people coming in and out trying to sell things, and one guy was getting a little too hands on with the clients, which was annoying.
One issue that really bothered me was a woman who dropped her daughters off to get their hair braided. One of the braiders stopped braiding to eat a burrito over one of the girl’s head. Then when she finished, she went back to braiding the girl’s hair without even washing her hands. Highly unprofessional.
Overall, Miriam alone would be a reason for me to come back here. She does good work! At the same time, these African shops are a hit or miss when it comes to atmosphere, so do your homework!

They did an okay job on the two dutch braids I wanted. However, initially she said it’s going to be 25 dollars which my friend and me both heard correctly; at the end she charged me 35 dollars and insisted that’s the right price all along. It’s not the 10 dollars that bothered me it’s the fact that she blatantly lied about it and pretend that we both heard it wrong.

I’m one of the lucky ones who didn’t spend a dime on this place. I walked in, hoping to get a price quote and an appointment. Instead, I walked into a salon full of rude people who didn’t even greet me when I came in. They were watching a movie and laughing. My presence felt more like an interruption of a private conversation. All it took me was one minute to survey the place for a helpful, friendly face before I bounced. I’ve had too many bad experiences with hair stylists and am getting better at smelling a bad deal.

I was a walk-​in for loc maintenance, and the stylist was able to get in me within a few hours. This is almost a miracle for a Saturday.
The stylist was also flexible in allowing me to use the internet and work while she twisted by hair… which that afternoon was very important.
Nice high quality AV system… beats staring at your feet for hours… and I am sure the owner would be fine with you bringing your own movies.
I got a very simple loc & twist, but stylist completely hooked up the two or three clients I saw leave the shop before me.
I parked in uptown, and walked ten mins. Parking near the shop can be hard. You can also take the BART. There is a stop 3 or 4 block away.
I will be a regular!

I would give no stars if that were an option. I saw a young lady whose hair I liked and went against all reviews on Unilocal and trusted it with my own eyes. I took a picture of her twists and when I arrived showed the lady the picture and explained how I wanted it to be. Throughout I explained how I wanted the length, parts size etc. Midway she left for an hour and not to mention she was late and had to eat before she started when I first arrived.
When she returned I told her that it was not the length nor how I wanted it. Needless to say she didn’t change anything (said she was going to do what she wanted) and then when it was complete said that it was more natural this way with layers. The braids are big, I can see my natural hair and they are different sizes and probably won’t last but a month or less. Needless, to say she should be fired.
Ironically, I left my wallet to pay for this horrid hair at my house so I suggested she walk with me the 5 minutes to retrieve it and then I was met with threats by three of the workers who surrounded me, called me a liar, and threatened they were going to cut the hair off that I purchased outside the braiding shop.
I had to leave by computer there to make sure I came back and when I returned I asked to have computer upfront where I could see it and I would give her the card the same time as my computer. They started yelling again saying I wasn’t going to pay, locked the front door and again threatened to cut my hair again. I waited until I saw my computer to make sure it was actually still there and then I paid. They were trying to charge me more but luckily the awful Braider confirmed that I was right. She wouldn’t look me in my face.
I assumed they thought I wasn’t going to pay because they did such an awful job but I honestly forgot my wallet and was going to walk with the lady and walk back with her. I even left my own personal computer to show I was indeed returning.
I am not going to return because not only does my hair not look good but the treatment I received was beyond hostile, unprofessional and scary. I hope no one gives them business ever again.

I wanted to give this business more stars but alas I can’t. I talked to a woman who assured me that she would be the one doing my braids, she also quoted me a price of $ 108.00 for the hair and service. I walked in on the day of my appointment with a cherry «hello» and the woman just sat there. After a moment of awkward silence I asked her if they were open. She replied they were and just sat there… ok so I finally asked if she was doing my hair which she was. So we get down to business, or so I thought! While searching for the color to match my hair she calls someone who I am assuming is the owner, they speak in their language as the woman runs her hands through my patch of hair… she then says «how much did she say it would cost?» I tell her «$ 108.00» she shakes her head no and tell me it will cost «$ 135.00 and that doesn’t include hair» yeah I was pissed. We haggled for awhile and I ended up settling for $ 135.00 including hair. My braids are all different lengths & sizes, they are ok but I am not ok with them changing prices on me and switching workers on me.

*DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME & MONEY* my poor braids are falling out as I type this Unilocal review!!! I shoulda listened to the other Unilocalers advice money down the drain it hasn’t even been two weeks!!!

Like I said they are hit or MIss. Today I showed this women a pic and she acted like she couldn’t do the style but what it was is that other styles are more $$. Ok fine I’m getting my hair done, but you can’t relax or enjoy the television because you have someone shouting another language in my ear! It is RUDE! And the owner does Not have extra language in her shop but today she was Not there. These people are not trying to build a rapport with people, so I won’t deal with someone who does NOT understand me or English !!! If the owner Sharon C can read this bye bye!

I expected more when I walked in. I expected to have my hair looking like I paid $ 200 (although she quoted $ 150 over the phone) for it. I thought the lady who did my hair knew what she was doing but apparently not. My hair looked okay for a week than braids started falling out from left to right… Oh did I mention it took 9 plus hours to do a 6hour job. She took a break every 30minutes… Oh and she was 30minutes late but still decided to make me sit in her chair and wait although someone else was gonna do my hair. If you go to this salon request anyone but the skinny old lady I think her name was MaryLou. I’m pissed.

Last time my mircos lasted for 3 months and they were still looking good when I took them out! going back for Mircos on Monday!

Ladies I know how hard it is to find a good hair braider. Trust me, I’ve been through them all, the whole damn gamut. I’ve had the lady who over books herself and had to wait 3 hours before she ever touched my hair. I’ve had the ratchet lady who yelled and cursed in my ear arguing with another lady and then stopped braiding my hair, stood up and snatched the woman’s weave out of her head. I once sat for 16 hours getting my hair braided. I’ve been handed a bottle to feed one lady’s baby. Really I’m just gonna end it here because all of this is bringing up bad memories…
Asia and her partners (can’t remember their names NeNe and Ava??) were amazing! Asia was very polite and professional. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and PRAISE JESUS she actually DID what I wanted! Exactly what I wanted!
Her work is really neat and my boyfriend absolutely loved it. I brought my own hair oil and she kindly used it. I’ve had people try to put all kinds of things on my hair like that hideous brown gucky gel.
Not only did she do a fantastic job but she was TIMELY!!! I came in a little early and she was ready to go! I got some curly senegalese twists done and it only took 4 hours.
The shop is fairly clean and everyone is professional. They played some pretty good movies too. Thank you World of Braids. I will DEFINITELY be back!
Oh P. S. unlike another Unilocaler mentioned, their Wifi DOES work. So facebook away!
***Update: Asia is no longer at the shop but I was told I would have someone who could do a great job too. Well my appointment day rolls around and no one is at the shop. I call the number on the door and the owner doesn’t know why there is no one there. She calls me back and says she’ll have a braider there in 30 minutes. Off to a bad start. My hair braider was fine except I paid $ 175 for the thickest twists I’ve ever gotten. Not to mention, I got no discount for waiting over half a hour. Very unprofessional. My braider also refused to let me turn and move to the side so that she was not pulling and straining my neck. I kept telling her my neck was hurting and she kept saying to relax. I’ve never had to strain my neck so much. Usually the braider will stand up and move around your head as they braid. She stayed in a central spot and had ME move and strain my neck around. Ugh. I’m really disappointed because I loved this shop and my previous stylist. Now I’m on the hunt again because I will not be going back there again.

I’m very disappointed by my hair style. I requested twists (similar to intro to locs style) and specifically asked if the (brown) gel was going to be noticeable and flaky. Well, I get home and notice the gel is brown and flaky. I’ve been wearing the style for 2 days and I’m tempted to wash it out.
Pros: on time, reasonably priced, spacious salon
Cons: didn’t wash my hair before starting, street/​metered parking, stylists do not appear to posess a variety of techniques
P. S. It may be an a good idea to call before visiting to ensure the salon is open

I am very pleased with my hair. It was done quickly and my braider was very respectful and kind.

I’ve been going to World Of Braids for several years now.
Positives:
Easy, flexible appointments
Convenient location
Hair can be purchased in store
Nice size shop w/​vending machine, and plenty of reading materials.
Excellent braiders, reasonably priced. I always receive a ton of compliments about my hair after I am done, and isn’t that really what it’s all about?
Colorful conversation and gossip is overheard — I rate this a plus because I am nosy, and when you are getting your hair braided for hours, anything that helps pass the time is a plus. Some may find the chatter unprofessional.
Negatives:
Parking can be a problem — it is metered for the most part, so come early to get a non metered spot, or bring a lot of change.
Service is not particularly personal or consultative. It’s very transactional, for the most part — if you are unsure about what hair or style you want, it may be difficult to obtain good advice from the stylists. No attempt at setting future appointments is made to retain customer relationships. I am a repeat customer, but I doubt they know that.
I like Tyler Perry as much as the next girl, but five hours of Madea is excessive. I’ve been there at least 7 times, and Madea was there too, on the TV, during each visit at some point. Variety is the spice of life.
Shop could be a bit neater, it’s a tad cluttered.
In summary, World Of Braids is satisfactory, particularly if you are familiar with what braid style you want, and don’t need consultation.
Note: The time it takes for your work to be complete varies by the number of braiders available for your appointment. If time is of the essence, request more than one braider specifically when you schedule your appointment.

I agree with SH. She must have had the «kinky twists specialist» like I did. She had an attitude and didn’t want me to tell her how I wanted my hair to look. She got an attitude and sat down because she wanted me to give her free reign over my hair. Also, I felt like she overcharged me based on the size of the braids. Won’t go back to her!
Also, the shop advertises that they have WIFI but I couldn’t get the signal in the back of the shop where the braiding is done. Check on the WIFI before you tote your laptop with you.
I’ve been here before over the years and it’s always hit or miss, but this lady was the worst.
