I travel to Ocala at least three times a week and the drive there is very pleasant. The turnpike is usually free and clear of moron drivers. As far as I-75 goes, be careful, many drivers going faster than 70−75mph and accidents are a common occurrence. Ocala is known as Horse Country due to all the horse farms in the area. Everything from Paso Fino to Thoroughbreds can be found in this city. I have traveled extensively thru the many backroads and county roads in Ocala and many areas are surrounded by beautiful mother nature and open pastures. The Ocala National Forest is also impressive. Many lakes and campgrounds are located inside the forest so if you like camping, this is the place for you. If you take SR-40, it will take you from Ocala to Ormond Beach and thru the Ocala National Forest. Next to Ocala, on SR40, you will find Silver Springs State Park which is also dedicated to you nature fans. Ocala is about 90 minutes from Orlando and the closest international airport is either Jacksonville or Orlando. If you want to take the scenic route from Orlando, I would recommend taking the Florida Turnpike to the last exit before I-75 which is US301. This road will take you from Wildwood to Ocala. Along the way, there are many things to see. The Russell Stover Chocolate Factory in Wildwood is off US301 on SR44. The Villages can also be found off 301 on CR466 or CR42. You will see many farmer’s markets along US301 where they sell fresh fruits and vegetables. Ocala is not all country though, they do have malls, restaurants and hotels especially near I-75. Further north you will find Gainesville, home to the University of Florida and that’s about 45 minutes north of Ocala. Florida has many treasures and Ocala definitely qualifies as one.
