The best Cuban coffee in town!!! I had exact same coffee in a Cuban household in Miami and since then been hunting for similar experience in the town I live ie San Diego. I am so glad that I found Azucar that serves the authentic Café Cubana and Café con leche

Delicious Cuban coffee and desserts! I tried chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and Cuban coffee. And they were all so delicious!

This rating is for the service, not the food. We went in to get a couple desserts to try in the hopes that we might potentially order a wedding cake from here in the future. We ordered three small desserts, which they put in a large(probably holds 6 – 10 desserts) pastry box. We also ordered a small meat pie and a coffee along with dog treats. Evidently, my fiancé lost his balance in the store while leaving. He now realizes the desserts had shifted quickly in the box as he walked, causing him to try to correct the box, and he dropped the box while seeking to correct it because he was holding a cup of water in his other hand. The staff was friendly about the spill which was appreciated, and they attempted to «repair» the damaged desserts. However, the girl behind the counter asked me what happened, and I said I didn’t know because I was outside with our dogs. She said they only could save two desserts, but she did not offer to replace the third one. She asked how I wanted her to box them and I said to put them in individual boxes in a bag. She accommodated my request. To me, these desserts(which aren’t cheap), should be boxed individually and bagged together to ensure they don’t become damaged during travel. This seems important since a large portion of their clientele walk here with their dogs, and large boxes won’t prevent the smaller desserts from sliding during travel. Disappointingly, I opened the boxes when we got home to see that both desserts still pretty damaged. I know they are a small business, but I have never been to any food establishment/coffee joint where they did not offer to replace a damaged good. Why does it matter what happened?! Our interaction turned from friendly/accommodating into accusatory/non-accommodating. She also forgot to give me my meat pie, which I had to go back for and she didn’t apologize for it. If they are this nit-picky about a couple desserts, then we certainly won’t use them for our wedding cake or patronize their business in the future.

If you watch what you eat, save this place for a special treat. We purchased red velvet cupcakes and dog treats. We purchased the cupcakes for a late birthday celebration. The red velvet cupcakes were amazing. Perfect amount of frosting to cake ratio. It reminded us of our perfect red velvet wedding cake. All three pups enjoyed the dog treats. Normally one of them will turn up their nose at a new treat, not this time. They all chomped away. We will definitely be back on our next trip to OB.

Love the spot and the vibe. Maybe a small spot for coffee shop this days but I love the attention they gave to me as a customer and the attention for making the coffee. I love the taste of the coffee — «cubano» not too sweet and not too biter. Just right. Looking at the desserts just makes you want to take one or two even if you know you shouldn’t. Stop over you won’t regret it

Stopped in because I was in desperate need of a bathroom. The barista was friendly and nice enough to provide me with the code, so I decided to get something small. I ordered a white coconut cream iced tea which was refreshing and a good size. As I was waiting for my tea to steep, I noticed that they had a unique variety of desserts showcased ranging from cuban pastries to mini cakes and cookies– I definitely want to come back to try their mojito cookie as I am a very big fan of the drink!

My wife was in the area so she stopped in and got some Pastries ToGo! *I’m sure these were much prettier when she bought them before surviving the long ride home… Diablo($ 7.00) sorry top got smashed on side of box, Diablo, the first thing that comes to my mind is «Heat/Spicy» this was none… Dark chocolate cake, chocolate mousse dome, glazed in dark chocolate — finished with a cocoa nib brittle… as a Lover of Chocolate but not Dark and the fact it had no spiciness to it I’m not sure why they all it Diablo, to me it was OK at best but I did really like the cocoa nib brittle! Crazy Carrot($ 7.00) Carrot cake soaked in cinnamon syrup, cream cheese mousse, topped with carrot cake crumbles, I thought this was good BUT the ratio of Cake to Mousse was way off, too much Mousse and NOT enough Carrot Cake. Little Havana($ 7.00) soaked rum cake layered with dulce de leche and topped with a swirl of vanilla cream cheese frosting and white chocolate sprinkles, Very Good but a little sweet… Cielo de Limon($ 7.00) Salted Pistachio Cake, rich lemon cream, pistachio macaron crumbles, pistachio cookie crumbles, if you like a Tart Lemon Flavoe? this is for you and was my favorite of the four.

This place gets 5 stars for variety. There were so many things i wanted to try, and the prices are great. I went for the Pastelito de Carne and Pastelito de Guayaba y Queso, both good! I’ll be going back

Oh my goodness! I just died and went straight to dessert heaven. I binge, I binge a lot. And when I’m on binging mode I can’t just pick ONE dessert. So I went with THREE, instead. My picks were the mango cheesecake, the other one(I forgot the name) has dulce de leche, cake and vanilla topping and another one(also forgot the name) like a key lime pie but with crumbles instead of regular crust. Good Lord, how can a person describe such marvelousness?! Quality is impeccable, the texture of the desserts is simply to die for, price is fair($ 7 each), service was super friendly, place is small but very clean, and the presentation of the food is a show itself. I am hooked and in so much trouble now…

I’ve checked in here 4 times, what keeps me coming back are the beautiful Cuban desserts. Try a coffee drink Try some meat pies Try a sandwich Try a MOJITOCOOKIE… Parking can be trying, but it’s worth a try for some special treats that you can’t really get many other places. If there is another Cuban bakery in San Diego besides this one to try, send it my way, but until then, I’m coming back here for the goods.

So excited I stumbled upon this place ! Being Cuban, I am ALWAYS looking for some good Cuban food, I am so proud to say I found a place that serves great croquetas and pastelitos de carne! YUMYUMYUM! Also loved the pastelito de queso, and tried the salted oatmeal cookie. All was to die for! I cannot wait to return for the birthday cake and Cuban sandwich. The service was friendly and the store was packed! Always a good sign. Ask for the pastries to be warmed, and you’ll enjoy them even more! So excited to come back.

Winner! I love this place. The desserts look beautiful and taste amazing. I tried the Cielo de Limon. I am a dessert fanatic and this dessert is brilliantly crafted. I am just visiting San Diego. If I lived here I would be a regular at Azucar.

Pretty cute, tiny dessert spot near Ocean Beach. We had just finished OB noodle and we were looking for dessert! My favorite was the Flan with coconut on top. The cake was extra chewy/thick. I’m a fan. =)

Desserts places are everywhere, but this place surprised me. I normally don’t come to OB for dessert because parking in this area is tough. Today was a lazy day, late afternoon and we parked right across the street. This is a small place, but very cute, simply decorated, light & airy. They’ve for a good selection of desserts, not alot of them, but just enough to where you can tell these are fresh. All looked tasty, not so exotic that you’re afraid to try. They also have a good selection of coffees and Cuban coffee. Today I tried the Cielo Limon-Excellent! Not too sweet, with a nice layer of pistachio crust. Champagne cheesecake also great. Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood!

I finally made it into this adorable little bakery/café and am completely in love! I had already eaten, but still tried the guava and cheese pastry and the salted caramel chocolate cupcake — both fabulous. I’m used to the Brazilian guava and cheese pastries where the guava is more like a thick paste, so I loved that this was more like a jam. Also tried the café con leche which was delicious, but definitely not advisable if you don’t like your coffee sweet. The coffees are at a great price, too, so now I just need to remember to go there when I’m craving a coffee. Friendly service and very cute interior.

Nom!!! Can I eat everything from here? Yes, it counteracts all of the yoga I did next door before I pop in, but I can’t help it with these pastries. The meat pastry sounds a little strange – it’s savory and sweet though! It’s so delicious and at a really great price for less than $ 3. The blueberry/coconut scone is beautiful and a really unique taste. I feel like it would be great to dip in some kind of acai bowl or smoothie. I need to go back to try EVERYTHING.

Love this place! I always stop by when I’m in SD for the mojito cookies(so unique– never seen these anywhere else) and whatever seasonal items they have that’s intriguing. It’s a cute little Cuban bakery located in Newport Ave next to antique shops and other stores. The people are always friendly and the desserts are usually pretty good. Only thing that’s upsetting is the ever changing menu because once it’s gone, that’s it. They do have some items that are pretty staple here– the Cinco leches pastry(but I find it’s a bit too sweet for me) & the mojito mint & chocolate chip cookies which I’m obsessed with! They have other pastries yr round but the cookies are my go to. The coffee is pretty good, too. Again, Cuban style so it’s a little strong compared to your avg cup of joe but it does the trick. They have parking in the back so if you’re nearby, stop in and grab a cookie! :)

I love the passion fruit ANYTHING there! I recently tried the gluten free raspberry scone with passion fruit glaze and it was delicious! It was about $ 4.50 so I won’t be doing that a lot but it was worth the little splurge! I do have to say when they made cronuts they were the best pastries I have ever had in my life! I even went to NEWYORK, where they originated, and Azucar’s were WAY better! NOJOKE! I wish they would bring them back!

$ 2 for the cheese roll, guava cheese pastry, and meat pie. SO got a single shot cubano(sweetened): delicious and strong! Porto’s cheese rolls are softer, and Azucar’s has a layer of caramelized sugar on the majority of its surface. It definitely helps because the cheese filling is a bit savory and the sugar really creates a full flavor. I wouldn’t compare Porto’s and Azucar’s because clearly Porto’s is $.70 each compared to $ 2 at Azucar. The guava cheese: the filling is ample, and the pastry is pretty flaky, a delicious treat. The meat pie: wow the filling has some sort of a pepper paste I think? I had this last and it was a very good end to a buttery breakfast. If I’m ever in the area again, I’d definitely drop in!

Definitely stop here if you get a chance. While it is bright and cheery, I have not had a chance to sit and enjoy a leisurely coffee. I will try to make that(plus a sandwich) my next visit. My first encounter with Azucar came as a very nice surprise at the office. Someone brought me a delicious raspberry scone with passion fruit icing last year and since that first bite(I can’t reminisce without my mouth watering.)… I have had this place on my radar. I’d stalk the Unilocal photos and covet all the delicious looking treats — waiting for the day I would be in the neighborhood. How fortuitous that a few months later my new eye doctor would be located next door to Azucar. I tried a small variety of pastries, all of which were good. I went back a week later and tried the huge pistachio passion fruit macaron. MMmmm… I have to end with: If you love passion fruit, like I do, this is a good stop to fulfill your cravings.
