For the price and location, if you really want Smith Island cake, go ahead… but there are much better cakes out there, with friendlier service, and better pricing, as close as the big, booming metropolis of Salisbury!

I first had their cake at City Dock Coffee in Annapolis and loved it. On our recent trip to Ocean City, we made it point to make it to their store. But it was much more than slices of cake alone. They had tasty and great looking cupcakes, cake pops, cake shakes and of course you could purchase a whole one. I was unable to decide which cupcake to get so got six(well 5-one was for my cousin)! I look forward to coming back in the summer and trying some more flavors.

Did you know Maryland has an official state dessert? Well, they do, and the Smith Island cake is it! I had it for the first time this past weekend and I have to say, give me peanut butter pie anytime over this. i know, there is most likely a long history of how this English torte-like cake came across the Atlantic and became a staple in the colonists’ diet. However, I found the«original» to be very dry and not anything tastier than a Betty Crocker box mix. The chocolate ganache frosting was its savior. It was very thick and chocolaty. I also tried the banana nut variety. It was so much better and much more moist. Yet, for $ 4.25 a slice, there are better dessert options. Even their average-sized pumpkin cupcake at $ 2.75 was much more flavorful. I’m glad I tried it, but won’t be back for it again.
