Okay, I’m really not in the habit of reviewing convenience stores, but for this particular review, I am reviewing their FOOD! Yes, food, and food only. If I’m not mistaken, this is the 7 Eleven that perches right at the intersection of Douglas, Vandegrift, and North River Rd in North County, just two blocks east of the new Fresh ‘N Easy that went in on Douglas. Anyway, I pass this every day on my way to work, and although, like most 7 Elevens, their gas pices are even higher than the AMPMs, I’d really like to review the food at this one. I work on MCB Camp Pendleton. Every day, I ponder the life-changing question of, «What am I going to have for lunch?» Should I go for the double-decker hamburgers at Wendy’s on the Base? Or maybe a 6-inch Subway sandwich? Both questions are met with a «Negative»!, as the lines for both establishments are at least 30 minutes long, which eats up(pun intended!) my 30-minute half-hour for lunch. And I’m not always in the mood for a Hawaiian Grilled Chicken Salad at Carl’s Jr. which is yummy, but costs me close to $ 8! How dare these so-called«fast-food» icons charge me $ 8 for a salad I could make myself at home for half the price! So I head off-base to the 7 Eleven on Douglas, which is a straight shot out the San Luis Rey gate. It takes me 10 minutes to get to it — and when I do, there are always two-for-one price deals — yesterday i got two Big Bite ½-lb hotdogs for $ 2.22! And they’re fresh from the grill! Better yet, I can slather on all the mustard, ketchup, pickle relish and onions I want, AND get a box to carry them out in! Add a drink, say an Arizona Green Tea for 99 cents, and you’re out the door for a total of $ 3.99 plus tax! I can’t find that ANYWHERE on Camp Pendleton! The other good thing about this particular 7 Eleven is that they will have, sometimes for a month, a deal where you can get a sandwich, choice of chips, and a drink for under $ 5! Fresh, already-made sandwiches are available every day — plus fresh sushi rolls(check first with the manager to see how fresh they are!); fresh, hot coffee in the morning with every pastry known to man on display, and your two-fer deals usually involve maybe one hot-dog/taquito combo, or two ¼-lb hamburgers! All reasonably priced! Small to medium salads of all types are wrapped and ready to go, and you always get deals on the fountain drinks. And for those of you who are fruit eaters, fresh bananas right there on the counter in a basket, and I’m talking NOSPOTS!!! So, after I gather up my purchases, I’m out the door and back on Base in 15, leaving me 15 or 20 minutes to scarf down my lunch. But it’s worth it.
