What a gem! It was our first time visiting Ojai and were very lucky to have stopped here for dinner. The food is amazing, and service is excellent. My fiancée and I sampled a few items on their menu: the salmon dinner, California roll, shrimp and veggie tempura, calamari tempura, and miso soup. Everything was so so delicious. We were even able to bring our pup and sit on their cute patio. We left so satisfied :)

Perfect place!!! Very good service and great food. Out of bounds flavor. Katsu Don with pork cutlet awesome only place I can find it since japan. This will be our new hangout foe sure.

The owner, Jay Hahn, is such a welcoming sushi man. He is from Hawaii and created a specialty just for me! He created a beautiful Poke dish «the way he does it for himself». It was a «superfood» meal at a reasonable price. Lots of tasty tuna, greens, special, tasty little vegies, in a ‘secret’ sauce. It was so yummy that I poured the leftover ‘secret’ sauce all over my yummy, leftover sticky brown rice! Mmmmmmm
And the whole time, I am listening to his traditional Hawaiian music while watching golf on his flat screen at the sushi bar.
I felt like I was in Hawaii!

We just moved to town and were excited to find a local sushi restaurant that we loved as much as the one we used to frequent. We went to one a couple of weeks ago and thought that we might just be out of luck. Then we decided to try Hakane. Am I ever glad that we did! We had a couple of rolls and the sushi sampler. All were absolutely amazing! We had the rainbow roll and the aloha roll. The aloha roll was different from anything that I had ever had before. Really nice sauce. But the sushi sampler… perfection! After we told our waiter how much we enjoyed one particular piece on the sampler, he recommended the salmon with lemon pepper. I am sitting here still thinking about it! Really can’t say enough about this restaurant! Super nice wait staff and delicious sushi! What more can you want?

First time at this new restaurant. The Uni was amazing. Really good rolls too. The owner was our sushi chef and he didn’t disappoint. If you’re looking for great sushi in Ojai with good ambiance this is the spot. Thanks Jay for a great meal!

Not many sushi choices in Ojai, but this got the job done. Was pretty slow for a Sunday but that did not mean we got our food any faster. Actually seemed a little longer than anticipated for take out, which is in most places somewhat quick.
Overall, the sushi was good, rolls were cut in small portions which I liked. Staff was kind, not fast, but kind. If you’re too lazy to drive to Ventura for good sushi, this could work. Pretty average.

Normal sushi restaurant. Service was great. If you want better sushi though and have the time/​energy to drive down to ventura, that might be a better option for you, but we were just lazy and wanted food asap.
This restaurant has a dog friendly patio, which was perfect for our little poodle, but there seems to be lots of flies in ojai, so that was a little bothersome.
Took a while for the food to come out, not too long, but a good amount of time. Probably won’t come back if I’m ever in ojai again.

Went to Ojai for a weekend birthday celebration. We were very impressed with the sushi at Hakane. Did not expect it to be absolutely fresh and wonderful! The rolls are unique and delicious too! Living in LA we pay triple for sushi as good as this.
The owner Jay is hard working and friendly. We will be back… it’s worth a trip to Ojai!

Good Sushi.
it’s not fast food. Let me say that again. It’s not fast. One waiter working a Sunday night dinner shift handling the whole house. Not good. This tells me he either doesn’t know what he’s doing or that the new Hakane Management /​Owners are too cheap to put more waiters and waitress’ to work to handle a dinner shift. Or that they don’t know what their doing expecting one Waiter to handle the whole house.
I ordered one roll and asked the waiter to leave the menu at the table as I may be wanting more. This was an indication that I wanted more food. He left me and my kid hanging for thirty minutes.
Not OK.
Better Service /​Better Attention = Better Tip
Too many people out there just lay down good tips for sub par service. Why?

Was craving sushi and thanks to Unilocal,this place popped up. Arrived around 8:30pm on Saturday, our large group was quickly seated. The waiter was hilarious. He went over some specials and highlighted the $ 5 sake, which ended up being one of the best suggestions. Apparently, the sake is made in-​house and was delicious. The chef/​owner stopped by our table to say hello and we tried to ask for the secret recipe/​ingredient for the sake, but to no avail… it’s still a secret.
We decided to family style our meal so everyone ordered something different and we shared. Rolls ranged from rainbow roll, Ojai roll, caterpillar roll, lobster roll, and some other fun names. Most rolls were more or less similar, but slightly different. Sashimi was fresh, but more expensive. Then again, getting fresh fish in Ojai is probably a challenge in itself.
Although we didn’t come to celebrate a birthday, the waiter brought out a small ice cream with cake so we gave it to someone in our group who had a birthday few weeks prior. All the staff came out to sing. It was lovely.
Food is affordable. Ambiance is nice. Service is wonderful. Yup, I’m a fan of Hakane Sushi.

My husband and I went here for dinner tonight. I really wanted to try their coconut tempura shrimp to see if it was as good as it used to be before the changes. When we arrived we were greeted right away and got to pick any table we wanted. We sat down and our drink order was taken and filled promptly. Husband got a beef teriyaki dinner meal thing that came with soup and salad, as well as a roll. I got a roll, my coconut tempura shrimp and tried some of his soup and salad.
Everything was super delicious! The coconut tempura shrimp was exactly how I remembered it — big juicy and flavorful shrimp with very sweet coconut fried onto the outside. So soft and tasty on the inside — this dish is really ideal for me to share with someone else because it’s so sweet. I treat it like a savory dessert more than an entrée. My veggie tempura roll was great, with no onions this time and with a delightful sauce drizzled all over it. My husband’s side salad with sesame dressing instead of the standard dressing was so tasty I wanted to steal it from him. The miso soup was nice, with a fine flavor and good consistency.
Staff was friendly and polite, service was well-​paced. One of the ladies who checked on us even remembered me from last time and mentioned the cucumber salad I didn’t get and how busy they were that night. Very nice folks.
Hakane sushi is back on my list. Thanks to everyone tonight and the terrific food.

I actually stopped in here before because a passerby gave me avocados and I couldn’t carry them all. The person working the front gave me a bag with a smile and was super nice even though I wasn’t getting anything.
Of course I went back to try the food and the food matches the incredible service. Can’t wait to go back. So nice to have good businesses like this in town that our a positive influence on the food served in Ojai and the way they treat customers.
