Real boiled bagel lovers rejoice! You now have another local option in Oklahoma City. Per their Facebook page, they make their bagels using a 2 day process with water proofing and a 24 hour rise time. Bagels are fresh every Fri — Sun 10 am — 6 pm and are available at Urban Agrarian(UA) in the Farmer’s Market District. I am a longtime, loyal customer of UA and bought my first 4 Backyard Bounty Bakery bagels there on Saturday to give them a try. The flavors available Saturday were Plain, Wheat, Blueberry, Maple Bacon, Everything and Jalapeño Cheddar. These bagels are expensive but UA was offering a deal of buy 5 get 1 free. They tried to talk me into doing that but I wasn’t sure if my husband would eat any bagels at all(too many carbs) and I was only interested in the non-spicy flavors(sorry Everything and Jalapeño Cheddar). On Sunday, I cut the Wheat bagel in half and made a ½ sandwich with some rotisserie chicken that I also got at UA. I just heated this sandwich without toasting the bagel first so it was softer and chewier — a mighty tasty sandwich. This morning, Monday, my husband beat me to the bagels. I had finally found our old bagel slicer which he had used to slice the Maple Bacon bagel in half. He toasted his half and added butter and honey before devouring it. I later toasted my half, actually I over-toasted and slightly burned my half of the Maple Bacon bagel. That didn’t stop me — I just scraped off some of the too dark areas then added a little bit of peanut butter & honey. Toasting the bagel made the outside crunchy but the inside was still nice and chewy and I did notice the bacon in it. It was really good even slightly burnt so I bet it’s wonderful when it’s not burnt! I am still looking forward to trying the blueberry and the plain. The blueberry is normal bagel size but the plain is huge! I am not sure if it will fit in our bagel slicer or if ½ of it will fit in the toaster. If not, guess we will just do our best slicing free hand with a knife and warm it up. It’s large enough that I might only do 1⁄3 or ¼ for breakfast with a banana. Backyard Bounty Bakery produces other products but I don’t think I have tried any of them yet. They also make the Briarberry Granola that is available at UA and at Native Roots Market. I will update my review in the future after I try more things. For now, I am a fan of their delicious bagels and will have to be careful not to eat too much!
